Who thinks Valve is making Steam for OS X?

edited March 2010 in General Chat
Just when you thought OS X gaming couldn't get any better thanks to Telltales entire platform being released fairly soon...

Valve has recently made some images that hint at an OS X port of Steam, and the latest release of steam has included some OS X compatible files. Does anyone else on here think that Steam for OS X is highly likely?

(If you are wondering why I never use the word "mac", and use OS X instead, it's because people who want a "mac" are looking for an easy to use, 'virus-free' computer. As an OS X user, I'm a Final Cut, Aperture, Photoshop junkie. I like to think of OS X as the more professional term. :D)

    Well… they’re quite obvious, it’s not a matter of thought. ^^
What we don’t know is how valve’s game are going to be, ciderised or native.

It’s great news for the mac platform. Plus, Mac are a very interesting hardware for this kind of webstore, because as Macs are just a few models, and except for Mac pros, not customizables, it’s easy to know how a game will run on our machine. And all the oldies, indies and a few online games are not very performance greedy, so it will run perfectly (if the ports are done seriously).

If it is ciderized I have no problem. I played portal using an unofficial cider and got through almost the whole thing is one sitting with very minor glitches

I don’t think it’s honest to sell at the same price a game with poorer performances and extra glitches because of the laziness/lack of interest of the company.
Even if it works. It’s not experimental. We pay for that, for a final product.

Eh... with city of heroes they actually worked with transgaming to try to make it perfect. the wrapper for that was made for COH.

You do realize that Crossover Games can run Steam, right? And that you can modify the Cider wrapper for one game to make it run another?

Also, did you know that Cider and Crossover are/are based off of WINE, which is open source (and, thus, free)? You can also install WINE on a Mac.

Oh, also, there is an easier to use and install (but possibly more unstable) free version of WINE called Winebottler...

I have been able to use Steam with Crossover Games. Oh, and I have been able to play Portal via CG.

And also all the games Telltale has released for free seemed to work with it...

Mind you, there are might be a few glitches here and there, and some applications/games just don't seem to work with it.

That being said, Steam for Mac would be great news!

You could say that, I just don't want to sound like a walking commercial when I talk about computers. Thanks to apples advertising, the word "mac" is now linked to simple, problem free, and cool, when in fact programs like Final Cut are not simple, problem free or cool at all. (I'm not saying I don't like Final Cut, I'm just saying that apple computers aren't always for college students that want to look cool)

Anyway, I hope Telltales games will be on Steam for Mac, I can't see a reason not to.

For anyone wondering, Game Informer's cover story - on *Portal 2* - lists the game as coming to Mac. So, Mac's been officially confirmed.

Not going to sound like an add-bot either, but what I personally like with macs is the unix side. They are fully certified unixes, why use anything like ubuntu or any other linux when you can simply run OS X with the same stuff in a nicer package?

Anyway on this, I do hope they release a mac port, would be cool :) Regardless of if they base it on wine or whatever. I don't really care how they do it, as long as you get what you pay for and the games run well. Then they can run it through a VM, just hide it so we don't have to go into it and run it manually. If it works, it works, why bother? Same way I feel about java, may have a lot of flaws, but most users who oppose it don't know when they're using it and don't notice the difference, mainly due to the level you can optimize it to.

The problem with things like Wine and Cider is that they don't fully take advantage of the OS X system, they just achieve the same performance they did on the PC. If Valve completely rewrites Steam for OS X, it will (potentially) run smoother and much better than the Windows version.

    Valve does.

Okay, Valve isn't using any emulation software. HOORAY!!!

So, now that it's official, it's time to change the direction of this thread.

What games would you like to see on Steam for Mac?
  • edited March 2010
Confirmed. All native and the option for Telltale style "pay once, get both formats" deal from all publishers (Valve will obviously offer that, and Telltale better do likewise).

I'll be a very happy man if this means I can play Civ4 without rebooting into windows every time. And of course I'm uberpsyched about all of the Valve stuff, but that's a given. WANT MORE INFO!

Yes! Finally I can get rid of that nasty Boot Camp partition! Now all my favourite devs are on the Mac! Blizzard, id Software, Valve and TTG of course ;)

It's official: Valve to Deliver Steam & Source on the Mac

Now, my question is: Will Telltale games purchased through Steam be available for Mac gamers when the Steam version of Mac comes out?

Not sure yet, but when we know the details we will be sure to update you.
  • I find it both HILARIOUS and AWESOME that my Windows 7 release candidate on my Boot Camp partition begins expiring the same month that TTG and Valve announce that their games are coming to Mac. I was about to buy Windows 7 so I could continue playing my games, but now I don't have to. Joy!

I don't own a Mac, but that would be pretty awesome
