Mix 'n' Mojo... hacked?

Can someone tell me what is wrong with this picture?

I have a sneaking suspicion that this is just a cruel April Fools joke.

    Me too.

The background music on the page gives it away.

But I have good memories of that music.

I wonder if all the virus leadup was just staged by Mix 'n' Mojo staff?

Yeah, it is. I'm just wondering how long this is going to last.

    Until Mojo '10 is unveiled.

    Sometime in 2012.

Just look at the site now.
I'm afraid it hás been hacked...

    ... yeah, that's a new one.

There are a few things weird about this though, which make me think that it might still be innocent.

First off, it's weird that the site went crazy on April Fools Day, of all days. But on the other hand, maybe that's exactly what the hacker planned, to lower our suspicions. I'll admit it, if that was their plan they managed to trick me!

Whoever did this seems like they could be a Monkey Island fan (the background music yesterday, the skull and crossbones today). And what reason would a Monkey Island fan have for hacking a site dedicated to adventure games and LucasArts classics?

But then, what reason would the staff have to randomly do this? Unless of course they are completely remaking the whole site.

Yeah... I'm being no help at all. I have no idea.

"Lunatic" is an ASCII artist. Either the Mojo staff or the hacker must have pulled the pic from a random site.
  • edited April 2010
Perhaps they used Lunatic's picture to ASCII art converter.

Haha it's clearly an April Fools-related thing.

The hacking earlier this year was real, I think. The site was actually attacked and had malicious code injected.

The Brazilian flags and cookchase.mid this time imply that it's a joke. The whole Mojo/LucasArts Fan Network server was notoriously overtaken and erased by some script kiddie from Brazil five years ago, and that midi file used to blare at full volume on Mojo if you tried to go to an unauthorized directory.

Don't know why it's up past april 1st though.

Most obvious scenario is as follows
maybe because its Friday and one of the guys in the office thought casual friday was the perfect time to bust out his daisy dukes and the rest of the team is sick in the bathroom..

It's not just that it's up - the site only changed to the ASCII skull on April 2.

I wasn't aware of either of these, though I did think that midi was blatantly a joke yesterday. Maybe the site owners haven't got round to putting the site back yet.

The "powered by mojo" minisites are still up and running (like mojoart, lucasfic, and all the game guides).

Don't be fooled. It's an April fool alright. It's not uncommon nowadays for April fool jokes to carry on a day or two beyond April fool's day to throw everyone off.

Now it really looks like Mojo's dead. I know that index page still works, but none of the articles are there.

    R.I.P Mojo!
I will miss all the excellent "in retrospective" articles.. Is all the hard work you put behind it truly lost at sea?? :/
    Damn you, Brazilian pirate hackers!!!!!!

But remember.. If Guybrush can rise from the dead - you can too!

It's not dead... It can't be!

    Hey, guys!
    DEAD?????
    did you mean....DEAD?!?!??!??

Don't they have backups of the site?
Cannot they change the host site?
Come on, i think that there must be a solution...

If they need money we can organize a fund for donation....

Also to you, Telltale guys, Mix n mojo was the N.1 to sustain you, providing constant news about your product.... let's do something about it!

I miss the site so much!

It's coming back on Sunday. I'd bet money on it. Not a lot of money, though.
the code of the site, the bricks the pages are constructed from, are too frail and aged to withstand another attack.
I don't think code works that way.
As you read this we are all in the basement of The International House of Mojo (yes, it's a real house), holding hands and chanting, keeping the hackers at bay just long enough to fling this message out to the depths of the internet.
Obviously not accurate even if it was hacked, but it seems a bit dramatic to put it like that.
Frankly, it would take a miracle for us to come back from the dead.
    Suspiciously blatant Easter reference there.
  • edited April 2010
no way is mojo dead! easter sunday is a good call. the internet wouldn't be the same without mojo, I hope we dont see an overhaul similar to scummbar-the Scummbar isn't what it used to be
  • edited April 2010
That and the whole: IT IS FINISHED thing.

I really hope they do come back all shiny and new on Easter. I'd be sad if it were actually dead.

Never mind the part where they said the hackers "crucified" them. :P

    Well that's a blatant lie.

It's ok, Mojo! We found your database!

    I'm totally calling shenanigans.

This was my most visited website for the last few years... :'(
I'm crushed... I just hope they can recover and if not, that the hosted sites remain untouched...

The explanation message killed the joke, methinks. Now it's all kinds of obvious that they're going for an extended prank.
  • edited April 2010
I wonder if they did this because of all the other weird problems they've been having lately (the virus on the front page a couple weeks ago, for example).
  • edited April 2010
I've had no internet access for the last few days, including over April Fools, so when I got back online today and checked up mixnmojo, I was certainly quite shocked to see the message up there. Glad to see that it likely isn't down though, given the database is still there. That's a "we're dead and can barely keep this page up" page that's far too well designed graphically for what they're claiming anyway.

Anyone else think the Brazilian flag with a skull on it that SkonkBad posted makes it look like the Sproutella logo?

I also would like to point out that they are using the ToMI underworld graveyard which Guybrush came back from...

Nah, it didn't kill the joke. It made it better by going for the whole 4th-wall-destroying-ridiculousness thing.

It's not there anymore, but over Good Friday there was an ASCII art picture of the Brazilian flag with a skull and crossbones on it on the main page, instead of the "It is Finished" message that's there now. :)
