I didn't know about this till I saw the advert after tonight's episode of Dr Who. As a big fan, I must say I'm rather excited.

    Thank goodness for the internet!

Looking at the gameplay footage I'm not sure this is going to be an adventure game in the traditional sense.
  • edited April 2010
I watched a short about it. Apparently you can get Exterminated. So, maybe a mixture of action and adventure?
  • edited April 2010
Well it wouldnt be daleks if they couldnt shoot at you. So I'm not surprised.
No matter what direction the game goes it is going to be pretty cool though, so lets just wait and see

Here's a making of video, lifted from the latest Confidential episode (i think that's UK exclusive, so you guys in the US won't see it normally).

Found THIS on Adventure gamers. Have to say, that is the funniest invasion ever.

I saw some screenshots. It looks kinda crummy.

I'm really cautious of adventure games made by other companies than Telltale. Telltale has a good puzzle interface and well thought out puzzles (well, except for strongbad); but in the past I've been disappointed by heaps of other Adventure games.

Broken Sword 3 was horrible (stealth sections, wtf?)(quick time events, who the hell came up with that?!?). If this game is of that quality, (and it looks similar), then I'm gonna take a pass, even though it's free.

The gameplay kinda reminds me of Dreamfall. Which we all know was a great game, being a mix between both adventure and action. And it could also work for Doctor Who.

I wonder if they would have done it differently if it wasn't a free game.

I can't see them putting that much time and effort into a free game, I mean there's nothing on the line really.

I'll be surprised if this is good. Adventure games are a tricky thing to pull off.

I'm sure the story will be fine, if not better. It's the gameplay I'm worried about, and from what I've seen, it seems more Broken Sword 3 then Dreamfall, which is a tad worrying.

The game will be great. I Don't imagine it will be similar to Telltale's episodes but it will hopefully be a pleasantly different experience. The new Doctor Who series has been fantastic so far and anything Steven Moffatt does seems to do ultra-amazing. He's doing the new Tintin film, y'know. Alongside Edgar Wright (Hot Fuzz) and Joe Cornish (Adam and Joe). Speilberg and Peter Jackson are involved too.

Mmm, I dunno... like Fury, I'll be (pleasantly) surprised if it's actually good. The gameplay videos don't exactly fill me with confidence.

No I had no idea! That's awesome.

I'm so looking forward to Tintin. It was one of my favourite shows when I was a kid, so I hope the movie doesn't disappoint. It's certainly got enough big names working on it (John Williams is doing the score, yay!).

I really hope they keep something similar to the cartoon's theme. It seems like a great fit for an epic adventure movie.

Yeah, the cartoon was brilliant. I hope Speilberg and Jackson give it that true adventure feel like the old Indiana Jones films.

Moffatt scripted the Tintin film, but gave up the chance to do the sequels in order to do Doctor Who (and the forthcoming Sherlock). One more reason I think he's awesome.

Moffat is making a Sherlock TV-Show? Thats so awesome! Besides Doctor Who, his 6-part-Jekyll-story is brilliant as well.

Apperently, no idea if they're region-free though.

It's downloadable. Of course it is.

He and Mark Gatiss (the writer of The Unquiet Dead, The Idiot's Lantern and Victory of the Daleks, and the guy who played Professor Lazarus in The Lazarus Experiment) are making it, and it'll star Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock, with Martin Freeman as Watson. Brilliant casting, I know.

It's basically placing the classic Sherlock Holmes stories in the modern day. Here's the Wikipedia link. I'm looking forward to this, which is surprising, as I don't look forward to much these days. Don't let me down again Moffatt*!

*I wasn't a fan of Jekyll. -Starts running-

I can't wait to see the Who sprites and their overly Botoxed faces in (in)action. :D

Between this, Puzzle Agent, the next episode of Sam & Max, and possibly even some real-life non-video-game fun, June is going to be a busy month.

Whoa. I was not expecting this to come out so soon.

I want to like it, but suspect that I won't. Call me a snob, but it seems too simplified, and I doubt the voicework will be stellar, from what I've heard so far.

I could be proven wrong, and indeed I hope I am. But I guess we'll have to see, won't we.

I was kind of worried about the quality of the games when they announced they were going to be free. But it’s like they say, you get what you pay for. And since these game are for free we’ll have accept the fact that the games will have some corners cut in quality.

Let’s see how the first game turns out before we judge them. Who knows, they might even surprise us.

Hmm, no Dr. Who fan at all. As most of the time i wish the concept art could be the game gfx instead of the less interesting 3d stuff they normally come up with afterwards then but let's wait and see. Although the last three Broken Sword games didn't come close to the first part, they at least were enjoyable games. The robot voice was, dominant?

The BBC seems to be in a recycling mood, Dr. Who, The Triffids.

well if they do attempt to ip block it, i'll have to practice my ip spoofing =/ oh well.

Just popping in to say that the first two games are now available in the US (and the rest of the world, it seems) via Direct2Drive, at an extremely reasonable price: $4.99 for the bundle... and at the time of this posting, the bundle is on sale for $3.70:
    http://www.direct2drive.com/2/9642/product/Buy-Doctor-Who:-The-Adventure-Games---Episode-1-and-2-Download

I only played for a couple of minutes to make sure it works, and the two games are actually bundled into one application, with a simple menu screen to let you choose which episode you want to play.

It's like that here in the UK.
$5 isn't a bad price. Is that for all the episodes, or just the two? I would definately say to all who fans to pick it up, and if you don't like the first game, try the second. It's a huge improvement.
  • edited July 2010
Wow, that's much better than I thought it would be. I was afriad there'd be a real mark up, but $5 is really very reasonable. Now when are the next ones coming out? :D

I'm gonna tack an uneducated guess and say next weekend (for us Brits anyway). I don't think there will be much of a delay for the rest of the world afterwards.
