Music, ingame or otherwise.

edited June 2010 in General Chat
I find that I like listening to soundtrack music quite a bit. umm...that is to say I listen to the musical score to movies, tv shows, and video games (just instruments, with little or no vocals.)

Lately I noticed that I've been listening alot to the Scummbar.com version of the Monkey Island 2 soundtrack or to the soundtrack from Tales of Symphonia.

EDIT: What music do you like? What's your favorite ingame music?

    OK... but why the thread?
  • edited April 2010
I just recently downloaded the whole Curse soundtrack from Scummbar.com as well as the soundtracks to the first three Tales episodes. They're the first scores I've ever decided that I could actually sit down and listen to for the enjoyment. Michael Land's music is superb!

Why not? No one was talking about it.

We're discussing music overall, or music in games. Even if the thread didn't really have much of a point (which it does), I'm sure it would soon evolve into a good discussion.

Okey dokey... it's just that it had no questions so it didn't seem to invite other people in! I need questions damnit!

Ok.. discuss away. You have my blessing.

The point was to foster conversation, as always.

    Yeah, fair point.

Why thankyou. And, seeing as how this is a music-related thread, do you actually think that guitars are boring?

Nope, not at all. It's a song title by Urusei Yatsura (the band, not the Manga)

Okay then. With the knowledge that you don't dislike guitars or find them boring, I all of a sudden have a higher opinion of you :D.

Okay so now there are TWO questions in the original post.

    Happy?

Wow, now you're turning everything into questions, even sentences that aren't intended to be questions.

Edit: By the way, guitarsareboring, I was just kidding. I thought you were cool before as well.

I fixed that already before you pointed it out.

Ecstatic! Hi-five! Oh, too soon? OK then.

My favourite in-game-soundtrack is without a doubt Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (Mega Drive version)... probably due to nostalgia. The Monkey Island series also has a fantastic soundtrack though, there is no denying it.

I've been listening to much quieter music recently, C86-style stuff and music that doesn't distract from reading. When I'm not reading I go for indie/lo-fi/noisy music but I can't seem to combine the two activities!

The evidence of your mistake still stand though.

I've been listening to the Sam and Max soundtrack for seasons 1 and 2 in anticipation of Season Three.

I was also listening to 50s music, but that kind of got cut off. Most of them are love songs, and...anyway, I don't want to listen to those anymore.

    And now yours...

One of my favourite in-game tracks would definitely have to be Peter McConnell's Bone Wagon theme from Grim Fandango.

    Aagh, the irony!

Also, this is one of my favorite songs ever. And yeah, I'll admit I first heard it on Moral Orel.

My current favorite band is Red.

Pick any song, I love it.

Vampire: Bloodlines got a nice OST.
Also nice OSTs; Most GTA's (VC especially), Midnight Club II, Deus Ex, Dungeon Siege, Star Wars: Force Commander (only good thing about that game), both Knights of the Old Republic, Unreal Tournament 2004.

I now have everything I could find from them, but yeah, most Mountain Goats fans that I've met will resent me for first hearing "No Children" on Moral Orel. :(

You can hear them wherever you like as far as I'm concerned. Have you heard The Extra Glenns' album?

As I've mentioned my favorite bands numerous times here already (not that I ever get sick of talking about them :p), I'll focus on the in-game music.

Pick a Silent Hill game. Any Silent Hill game. Now, pick a song from the soundtrack. There you have it: one of my favorite game songs ever. Akira Yamaoka seems to be physically incapable of composing a bad track. His lyric writing is a bit weak, but not godawful by any means.

Martial Arts Weekend? Because that's a great one. My favorite Mountain Goats album is "The Sunset Tree". The message throughout that album really resonates with me. "Tallahassee" is also way up there.

Yeah that's the one, fantastic. The Sunset Tree is my favourite too, particularly Dance Music, brilliant lyrics.

AMAZING lyrics! Dance Music is just extremely well done all around. I love it. It's between that and the just sheer cathartic ENERGY of This Year that make the album so great.

the just sheer cathartic ENERGY of This Year

I like to listen to This Year when I'm feeling a bit edgy - musically, it's like total abandonment, like being on the verge of doing something completely nuts.

He's obviously trying, desperately, to hold onto some semblance of sanity for this "one year". He's 17, he's in a broken, abusive home, and the only thing between him and finally being free is the rest of the year ahead of him. He's obviously going insane, but he's clinging to life as it speeds along because there's something up ahead that he desperately wants, his own independence from the shackles that have held and abused him for so long.

The line "The taste of scotch rich on my tongue" always kills me, the thought that a seventeen year old's alcoholic drink of choice is Scotch. Just a truly awesome song.

As far as games go, I love the early Sierra soundtracks. More than LucasArts. The works of Mark Seibert, Ken Allen, and Chris Brayman are among my favourite composers. The later Sierra adventure soundtracks by Neil Grandstaff and Dan Kheller didn't really do it for me. The soundtracks to Space Quest IV, King's Quest V, King's Quest VI, Conquests of Camelot, and King's Quest I (remake) are among my favourites. Then there's Thexder 2: Firehawk and Zeliard. Monkey Island 2, Indy Fate of Atlantis, Sam & Max HTR, DOTT, Full Throttle, Curse of Monkey Island, Star Wars Dark Forces, Wolfenstein 3D, Duke Nukem 2 & 3D, Unreal, Unreal Tournament, Hexic HD, the Half-Life series, Portal, Team Fortress 2, Oblivion, God of War, Smash Bros Brawl, Zelda Twilight Princess, Ocarina of Time, Link to the Past, Alien Carnage (Halloween Harry), Myst series...

    To name a few.

Favourite game soundtrack for me's probably Super Mario Galaxy

Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles wasn't that fantastic of a game, but the music was very actually really good, with them using real troupe with expertise in Renaissance folk music.

I like a ton of music. There's way too much to name, but I'll name some of the best.

    Ennio Morricone-

    The Trio
    The Surrender
    Ecstacy of Gold
    Addio Colonnello
    La Resa Dei Conti
The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly
    The Chase
    The Man With A Harmonica
The Finale to Once Upon A Time in the West

    Anime music-
    Green Birds
    Final Wish
    The Real Folk Blues
    To Be King
    Envy Revealed
    Crisis in the North
    Zero Hour
    Diamond Crevasse
    Xing Symphony
    Lapis Philosophorum
One is All, All is One
    Renton Thurston
    Speeding Spirit
    Dante
    Bratja

    Misc. Movie music-
The Secret of NIMH: Main Title
An American Tail - Main Title (probably my favorite song on earth)

I like the soundtracks for the Indiana Jones movies and the Pirates of the Caribbean movies and the Batman movies and the Spiderman movies and the Star Wars movies and the Star Trek movies as well, but I don't think I need to post any of that.

I won't even try to list some of my favorite video game songs or non-video game bands, or I'll be here all day. You know something I really need to make a list to post every time a music topic like this comes up, so I don't have to keep posting this every time.

Seconding this, especially Silent Hill 3's soundtrack.

Anyway, let's talk about some not soundtrack music (not that there's anything wrong with that). Recently, I've been listening to a lot of Daedelus. He does experimental electronica with a lot of chiptune instruments and samba beats. It honestly sounds like music that would play in your dreams.

Oh, and Gorillaz is pretty great too.
