Monsters Inc. sequel announced
The BBC is reporting that Disney have announced a sequel to Monsters Inc.
I'm pretty excited for this. I know 2012 is a long way away, and there are no other details known, but Monsters Inc. is probably one of my favourite Pixar films and I think I can trust them not to screw it up.
The article also continues to say:
...which I think is a bit odd as they'll have two films coming out within the space of around five months.
What do you think, Pixar fans?
The animated follow-up will be released on 16 November 2012, Disney chairman Rich Ross revealed.
Featuring the voices of Billy Crystal and John Goodman, Monsters Inc made more than $525m (£342m) worldwide.
It is not known if its director Pete Doctor - who went on to make the Oscar-winning Up - will direct its sequel.

And Monsters, Inc is one of my fav Pixar, and its ending was perfect. I'd rather have it left as it is.
I'll wait and see what they do with it though. If Boo is an adult or a teenager for instance, it could be interesting. Also, seeing if there is more awareness of the Monster world. Maybe there are even more contacts between the two.
Still, my first reflex is to be very sad about it. I hope I'm wrong and that it will be the first amazing Disney sequel.
I liked better Toy Story 2 than Toy Story...
At least it can't be as bad as the Fox & the hound 2, right?
Well I didn't But I do think it was an okay sequel, better than most. Still I thought the story as better left as is. It just felt too much like "this time it's Woody who's been lost/kidnapped rather than Buzz, and Buzz who needs to go rescue him! And we're gonna find Buzz a love interest because he doesn't have one yet!"
I just get annoyed that sequels seem to often be the same thing again or the same thing backwards, or worse, the same thing again/backwards, but with the kids of the previous characters.
When it's an actual story rather than a "let's find a way to bring these characters back" it just works much better.
I agree. I also cannot wait for Toy Story 3.
Back on topic, it's not a sequel I would have expected but I'm rarely disappointed by anything that says "Made by Pixar", so I'm looking forward to seeing it.
Wait... Toy Story 2, Cars 2 and Toy story 3... How is that only one?
I guess they just got three REALLY GOOD STORIES in a row for established franchises.
I think he means only one has been released so far. Considering it will be only four sequels in the 23 year history of the company, I'd say it is still rare for them. Besides, there is still that Bear and the Bow movie and the Newt thing coming, so there are still original stories . I personally don't care about Cars 2, since Cars is one of only two Pixar movies I don't really care for, the other being A Bugs Life. This is kind of funny though, because I just saw part of Monsters Inc, on TV earlier today.
Newt- meh.
Cars 2- Never particularly cared for the first one.
Monsters Inc. 2 - HELLS TO THE YES
From this point on is me rambling about stuff I hope is/isn't announced as well:
Ratatouille 2 - No. For the love of god Pixar, don't go back to this very average series
A Bug's Life 2 - YESYESYESYESYES
The Incredibles 2 - Indifferent.
WALL-E 2 - I really liked Wall-E, but no, no sequel. Ever.
Finding Nemo 2 -See above.
And I still haven't seen Up. Shame on me.
Monster Inc 2 doesn't have an explanation for me, though. I loved the movie, but I don't see a reason for a sequel. Explanation in the way of "I can understand why they are doing that". If I'm agree (I'm not agree with a Car Sequel) is other stuff.
I would like to see Disney producing at least the Cheapest Muppet Movie Ever Made though, but that's not part of the discussion ^^U
Wait. THAT'S my favorite movie!
Anyways, I realise they're not making sequels for every single thing, but I feel that they're still making more than "only if we find a very good story that happens to fit" would call for.
Anyway, I'll wait to see what the sequel is actually about. Maybe they do have a good story for it, after all.
23 Year History: 1 sequel
Next Three Years: At Least Three Sequels
Yay for the muppets movie too!
Pixar is losing momentum in my eyes...
Or maybe some of you are OVERREACTING.
And I don't want to hear "Oh you can't use Empire Strikes Back as an example because hardly any sequels have been made of that caliber". That's bullshit.
I just get worried about Disney sequels, or sequels for the sake of sequels. Surely you know what I mean? Sequels made so the people who liked the first one are sure to come back, and you don't have to come up with all the characters, and often not even with the story itself.
I hope it will be good, I'm just worried.
Starwars was built to be a saga right from the biginning (Darth Vader being knocked away). The likes of Cars and Monsters Inc all had their respective stories wrapped up nicely. They don't really have any plotends that need tying up, and monsters inc definately doesn't seem like the type of film that could be explored further.
You mean like-
which were sequels to-
and were incredible. I'm not saying Monsters Inc 2 would be incredible, I'm saying sequels don't automatically suck.
We're not saying that. We're just worried because Pixar went from "sequels are overdone and we'll make sure not to have too many of them" to "let's have lots of sequels now".
Maybe their sequels will be awesome. There can be great sequels, including sequels that are much, much better than the (sometime sucky) first one. It just sounds like they're all "forget about what I said before!", and since I don't trust Disney with sequels, and have been given no reason to trust Pixar so far, I'm worried.
But as long as it doesn't prevent them from making movies that aren't sequels as well, I guess whatever. I don't have to see them anyways.
Especially the Cars one, I never even saw the first one
Monkey Island much?
People complain just as much about sequels to games, don't they?
Also, I don't think a good sequel has to continue the story of the first one to be good. It can just be a new story with the same characters, but as long as the new story is good, what is there to complain about?
I think we might be more used to games as a series/license, like the Mario games, the Zelda games, etc, and quicker to expect sequels to games while a "normal" movie stands alone.
And of course for those games, such as Grim Fandago, that did work on their own and wrapped things up nicely, people tend to think that they shouldn't make a sequel, too.
Sequels can be very good, but quite often it's either a rehash of the prevous story (either the same or the opposite), or a story that's so completely different that if feels like the story was forced onto characters that didn't work for it. I personally felt that way for Runaway 2 (I know, it's a game, not a movie). Let's just say it felt like a) the main character I had grown to love in the first game didn't exist anymore and b) they were trying to force characters from the first game back into the second one.
It just didn't work as well as the first game for me. That happens all the time with movies, animated or not.
On the other hand, there ARE sequels I like better than whatever it's a sequel to.
At any rate, be it movies, books, games, etc, I tend to prefer when it was thought of as a series, rather than the first one made and "hey, I should add more" when it's successful. Keeping in mind that there is the option of "I would to more, but in the meantime I'll try to make something that can stand alone, while leaving room for the sequel I'm thinking of".
This. Disney doesn't know how to do sequels, but Pixar has done at least one damn good one! We'll see if they continue the trend. I don't care too much, because I didn't really like Monsters Inc all that much, but I suppose it's the movie that had the least final conclusion...
Don't put me as a example.
I must admit I watched first Toy Story 2, so that could affected.
No need to put yourself down You're allowed to prefer the second one and it doesn't seem you were the only one.
I guess it's possible the order you saw them in made a difference, but then again maybe not.
Lion King 1½ and 2
Pocahontas 2
Jungle Book 2
Peter Pan 2
Aladdin 2 and 3
Cinderella 2
Little Mermaid 2
Mulan 2
Lilo & Stitch 2 ("Stitch!")
Beauty & the Beast: Enchanted Christmas
Lady & The Tramp 2
Fox and the Hound 2
The Hunchback Of Notre Dame 2
...among others, I'm sure.
Here's a useful tip: If Disney makes any movie sequel that goes straight to home video, IT SUCKS.
I quoted the ones I liked. I may have to rewatch them with a critical view to tell for sure though.
This. Maybe some OTHER people are overreacting....
Also, The only GOOD Disney sequel EVER MADE was The Rescuers Down Under. That was an amazing sequel that was FAR better than the original. I also liked Lion King 1 1/2, though. Because it's so funny. And I have all 3 Aladdin movies because Aladdin was my favourite Disney movie as a kid. I remember my parents bought me the comic of the first movie before the movie came out. Fond memories reading that as a kid and wondering how it would be in a movie. Only to be blown away by how it was presented in movie form compared to the comic book.
Good times...
