Valve's Portal is free for PC and Mac gamers until May 24th!

http://store.steampowered.com/freeportal/

Go get it now if you don't own it! This isn't a temporary deal. It is a temporary offer, but once you buy it (for free) you own it. Even after the due date is passed. Go and get it now even if you're computer can't play it! Someday maybe you'll get a good enough computer so you can play it and you'll thank your lucky stars that you managed to take advantage of this incredible deal while it was free!

Those of you who don't know what Portal is....you're beyond help.

I already beat Portal on Xbox 360, but I can't resist a free game download.
  • edited May 2010
Even if you've got it on another console, download it. You get heaps and heaps and heaps and heaps and heaps of community content on the PC. Hell, you get the TFV mappack for free, as opposed to paying for a butchered port!
  • edited May 2010
Yeah. And if you don't really want it right away, you can "buy" it and you don't even have to download it if you don't want to. But it'll always be there linked to your Steam account if you ever need it.
  • edited May 2010
Some of the less scrupulous out there are prolly registering tons of Steam accounts to flog on eBay with Portal attached
  • edited May 2010
Drat! I already own both the pc & 360 versions. Ah well, I'll just spread the word of Portal instead...
  • edited May 2010
HELL YEAH. I've played it before but now I can actually own it.

Dude, thanks for telling me, I can't believe I didn't actually miss an offer deadline this time.

    That just screams my name.
Took this offer too, cant resist.

It's a sly move by Valve which is good for everyone. The more systems you get Steam on the more sales you get and the more you can advertise directly. I can see every Mac users who's ever played any sort of game jumping on this the second they see it. Same for PC, though I think the free Portal offer for PC users was mostly to keep any nerd drama at bay, plus Valve are just cool like that

boy howdy 125 bytes per second how can this be

    it is a mystery
  • edited May 2010
Soon as I heard I promptly posted the news to every forum I frequent. And everybody and their third-cousin's pet rat is probably downloading it at once right now. Might be a while :).

Hmm, I played Narbacular Drop and quite enjoyed it, I don't know if I need some cruddy remake.

I kid, I kid. Thanks for the tipoff!

Well it's not /totally/ free is it. You have to sign up for a Steam account. If you download "Abe Lincoln Must Die!" from Telltale, you don't need to have a Telltale account to run it, do you?
  • edited May 2010
Steam is free...and it only requires an email and password to signup. And once you activate a game once in Steam you can play it in offline mode.

For a free tier-1 title like Portal this isn't much of a big deal. Also, you do need Steam to play the free version of Abe Lincoln Must Die. Or can you get it for free from Telltale's store as well? Either way, please let's not turn this into another Steam-bashing thread.

This post is just to respond to the question. I have few problems with Steam, though I by no means want to use it for everything.

Anyway, Yes, it's free on Telltale's site, and you just need to download the free installer.

I am very happy that TTG has its own shop. I'm not a big steam fan and dislike having the client running on my machines.

As soon as you start playing multiplayer games Steam becomes useful. That and the sales
  • edited May 2010
Civilization V is getting the full run of Steamworks features. That's going to be useful!
  • edited May 2010
Def, I hate the wee GameSpy thing that always pops up for Civ IV

That's actually a pretty good idea!

    :p

I own Portal already (the Orange Box even), but does owning just Portal allow you to play Source Mods as well? If it does, it opens up a lot of opportunities to a lot of people.
  • edited May 2010
Yes, I believe it does. Owning any Source game allows you to play Source MODs. That's how the Black Mesa Source MOD is going to work anyway.
  • edited May 2010
Yay! Thanks for telling us, I'm getting it now.

Is this Free to play until the 24th, or is it like TTG's offers where you can download it for free until 24th (keeping your free version after that date)?

The latter. As long as you get to the page before the 24th, you own Portal. For good. For free.

I don't "hate" it, it's serviceable, but it's not exactly clean. Then again, I probably have a better experience because I'm always talking to someone on Skype as I'm setting it up, I've never randomly joined a Civ IV game.

How about singleplayer games in which your save files are stored online automatically(as well as, of course, the local copy)? Do you have multiple computers that can play a game, for instance? I can go between my desktop and my laptop while playing, for instance, Misadventures of P.B. Winterbottom, and Steam remembers my progress between the two. I wish more games used this feature, it's really very neat.

Also, the idea of disliking all multiplayer games seems insanely asinine.

That's already answered in the first post. If you add Portal to your Steam account between now and May 24th, it'll be yours forever, for free.

Downloaded! I was just considering buying this game, too, but held off to see if I could find it for a lower price. :D:D

Ian has been downloading it for about an hour and it isn't nearly done. Is it supposed to be that slow?

It's not supposed to, but the servers are being hit hard by everyone trying to download Portal at once.

Pff, silly people, can't they download Portal another day? Ian wants to download Portal!

I'm not 100% on this because owning Half-Life: Deathmatch or Portal: First Slice (which is just the first few test chambers basically) are specified as not being eligible to run Garry's Mod because they were free to peeps with certain graphics cards, so maybe free Portal doesn't count as well... probably not, but maybe
Also, the idea of disliking all multiplayer games seems insanely asinine.

Thats a bit too much of a sweeping statement for my liking but I know what you're saying. I have a friend who i argue with about this all the time because he "doesn't want to play with the inferior people" and can't see the depth in any multiplayer game. He's the master of sweeping statements, even putting yourself to shame Mr. Dashing. Normal procedure is to call him an unadventurous dick and open up TF2 whilst he watches to piss him off

The only real issue with Steam that I have is that the flimsy wi-fi connections I work with won't let me play my games wherever I want, whenever I want, which shouldn't really happen. "But isn't it the connections' faults?" Not exactly, see, Steam should and has an offline option, but because it constantly needs to update, if I go somewhere where the wi-fi won't connect to Steam for whatever reason it'll be stuck on "updating" before asking if I want to start it offline, but then it won't start at all because it's not updated. Thus I can't play if I can't open the program.

This is the entire game though. And Portal is listed as including the Source SDK here. So I would think it does support Source mods.
  • edited May 2010
I'm now able to download Source SDK when I wasn't able to before, if that helps anybody.

You have to pay for Garry's Mod, though.

MusicallyInspired I love you for informing us! I've been meaning to get this for ages ever since my brother introduced it to me. but I keep spending my money with Telltale instead. Isn't it nice how things work out!:D
  • edited May 2010

Yeah but you need a Source game to run it regardless, it doesn't seem to come with all the Source gubbins

Aye, free Portal owners are more than likely golden :)
  • This should allow Valve to see what kind of user base they're going to have out of the gate with Mac owners.
  • edited May 2010
Deal was too good to be true, my little brother told me about it and I started downloading it right away.

Already beat it twice, and are working my way through the advanced maps now :p
  • edited May 2010
Nice, though I wish it had been one of the adventure games ;)

I think I will enjoy Portal until the levels become too difficult for my feeble mind.

If you set it to run in offline mode as default, the games won't know when there is an update available, and hence won't block your access. Of course you would need to make sure everything is up to date before setting it to offline mode, but it should be fine after that.
