GREAT! So I just finished downloading the ~4GB of Portal, go to play it, and I get this message: This game is currently unavailable. Please try again later.
Nice, though I wish it had been one of the adventure games
I think I will enjoy Portal until the levels become too difficult for my feeble mind.
As far as I'm concerned, Portal is an Adventure Game, or at least a not-too-distant cousin somewhere in a vaguely-defined "puzzle" genre. Not calling Portal an Adventure just sort of feels like not calling Loom an Adventure.

HELP!
Have you tried booting it up multiple times, or turning your PC off and on again? I think i may have had a similair issue when i first tried to boot up the game (it jammed i think), but on the 2cnd or third attempt it was fine.

Ok so getting portal gets me some content on garys mod(strangely the only valve game that works for me) so what all do I get in it. Do i get the portal gun?(please)

I agree. It has much more in common with Myst than it does with Doom. There are a couple of places where I get frustrated because I need to actually react quickly to something, but I get infinite retries so it's not that bad, and really it seemed to be a requirement throughout the 2000s for every adventure game to have at least one annoying reflex-based puzzle, and there were plenty of "real" adventure games that had more of those than Portal does
I've only tried it out for a few minutes to see whether it worked. So far it's more an "escape the room" game to me. Does anyone else have trouble understanding the computer voice? And what's the backstory, or will this become apparent whilst playing?
I personally don't have troubles understanding GlaDos, though I can understand how others can. You should turn on subtitles because what she says is hilarious.
I understand the computer voice quite well, there is some times it breaks with static and stuff, but it's mean to.
You are kind of just thrown in there, with no clue what is going on, but it will all be explained.
Okay, thank. Haven't really looked at the options menu (only to change the keyboard controls (WASD isn't that handy on AZERTY-keyboards ) but I guess a subtitle option is pretty self-evident.
I don't know why, but this game is like a 3D version of some 2D platform flash game I've played years ago. There's just something very familiar about it all, but the first person POV is new. I don't really like such a POV, though, but I think I might still enjoy this game for a while, as I did "Mirror's Edge".
alright, i think my computer was just on for too long when i tried to play it. ( i kinda didnt turn my pc off since about 2 nights ago ) and when i tried this morning it worked fine.
Good to hear I am not the only adventuregamer to dislike Portal (or gamer to dislike Portal).
Usually if I mention that on forums I get a lot people wondering what the hell is wrong with me...
I am just getting it so I got a source game (other than the brilliant Vampire: Bloodlines which doesn't count ) and use source mods.

What the hell is wrong with you?!
But seriously, what do you dislike about it then? I don't mean that in a hostile way, I'm just wondering why you think that. (Sorry if you answered that question here before)
I think the puzzles are great, and the story is fantastic, even though (and perhaps because) there's not terribly much of it. And the bonus during the credits is icing on the cake
I just don't like puzzles like that (yeah). Also don't like Mirror's Edge for the same reason.
Also, I couldn't understand a word of GlaDOS, so no added effect there. Although I guess that could be fixed with subs (was playing at a friend, so was using his setup).

If you miss what GLadOS says, then yeah, most of the effect is lost.
Maybe you should play it again, but with subtitles on. It almost becomes a different game. Like how playing Monkey Island with and without text and voices is different
Ian described Portal as a "first person adventure game".
He also finished it pretty fast and said he was glad he didn't pay for it.
Well it was crammed in a box with 4 other games for (less than) the price of one, so i'm glad I payed for it. Portal was the experiment of the Orange Box, and one that payed off nicely

Yeah, Portal wasn't really a full game release in a traditional sense. The upcoming sequel will definitely have a "full game" feel to it.
Erm... What upcoming sequel. Your getting me excited. Have you got a link or anything that shows more.
I'm sure you'll be able to find some info. The most exciting feature to me is the Co-Op campaign that is completely separate from the single-player game.
OK. Even more excited now. That co-op had better be included on the PC version and not just x-box. It's rare to find co-op games for the PC now. They're all deathmatch instead.

It's a Valve game. If it does not use every single Steam feature available, I'd be shocked. I'm really hoping for Steam Cloud saves.

See, you broke a fundamental rule here; Everything valve does revolves around the PC version. The console versions are just terrible ports by EA that valve barely cares about.

I've never been so glad to be proven wrong in my assumptions.:D
I payed $20 for stand-alone Portal, and despite them selling The Orange Box for like $5 a couple weekends later, I never regretted it. Short or not, Portal is an extremely solid gameplay experience. The story was a perfect length, and if somebody still felt there wasn't enough content there, they could play some of the ten million bonus challenges and levels.

HELP!
Isn't it 1.5? (Still a lot for my feeble connection)
Hehe!
Right-click on portal. Properties>Local Files>Verify cache intergity (or something to that effect)
If that doesn't work try running in offline mode

Black Mesa lol!
Put it's release up there with Beyond Good and Evil 2 and They Hunger - Lost Souls.
Replay it.
They added radios.
(are they still there actually? I haven't checked)

Here you go Though it's best when listened to after completing the game.
For now it's on hold though, gotta save bandwith for S&M302. Don't want to run out again in the middle of the DL like with 301 .
