Does Post Count Matter?

edited October 2010 in General Chat
This is branching off from another thread that went WAY off topic. Does having a high post count matter to you?

Only if I get to be on a DVD. Which probably won't happen unless I increase my posts per day by about...say...one thousand percent.:D

NO, says the Pale Man, it belongs to everyone!

    Wait, I'm not Andrew Ryan.
  • edited May 2010
No, but I put "Yes" because I want to feel I'm trying to be important.
  • edited May 2010
No. Some people could have a post count in excess of 1000, 2000, etc. and have absolutely nothing of value to say. They could say a giant load of crap every time they decide to make a post. Having a high post count doesn't always mean that the person always has something clever or insightful to say, maybe they're just a waffler who posts too much.
  • edited May 2010
I Think a post count matters in the sense a higher post count means they've Posted more (well duh!), so in theory they have expressed themselves mroe, so you feel like you know them.

But as a status symbol, like i've seen in other forums, definately no. Although, having said that, in some other forums, low post counters are usually rabid fanboys, and they mature as their postcount increases (probably because of the amount of abuse they get!)

So, in short, the amount of posts someone makes affects the community's perception of them, but that holds true even if the post count was invisible.

This seems like as good a place as any to say that I avoid the Forum Games section like the plague, so my post count reflects exactly how active I've been on here. It's the join date that's off. I may have viewed the forums for the first time on 8/19/09 (and I have no idea why, but it had nothing to do with Spinner Cay coming out the next day), but I didn't so much as lurk on here until I started posting after finishing Trial and Execution on October 30th.

And what does any of that have to do with post count? Zilch, but I'm the one who started the post count derail in the other thread, so apparently this is what I do.

As for my actual count, certain milestones might feel special, like 1000 posts, but in the end it doesn't mean much to me, other than that I've been more active on this forum than any other by far. For reference, I've been the second most active on Gaia, where I have 394 posts since March 2006, almost all of which have been in private RPs my friends talked me into, in a Nintendo guild, or meaningless bump posts in the holiday event forums.

So what does my post count mean to me? It means that I like this place. I like the people here, and I actually have things to say here and feel comfortable saying them. All 1528 of them so far.

Posting in the Forum Games section doesn't add to your post count.

I know, that's what I was getting at. My post count reflects exactly what I've done on here and no less.
  • edited May 2010
Oh. I really don't see "forum games" as "doing things", but okay.
  • edited May 2010
Well, me neither, but at the same time, it's interesting to be able to see that I've got exactly 1,530 pieces of text floating around on here.
  • edited May 2010
I've noticed that just recently a lot of people have hit their 1000th post mark. I'm gettin' there eventually.
  • edited May 2010
I remember back when there was only two Seasons of Sam & Max, only three people had 1,000 posts and the rest were 300-700 posts. Now everyone has 1,000 posts and now unique part is no longer 1,000 but 2,000.
  • edited May 2010
I should reach 2000 in another couple months or so.

I'm not sure whether to feel good or bad about that.
  • edited May 2010
Besides Jake and Rather Dashing, who has a 4000+ post count?
  • edited May 2010
    Emily, I believe.
  • edited May 2010
I don't think so. I see I haven't long to go until I make 100 (woo hoo), but most things I post are complete nonsense. Including this.
  • edited May 2010
Many people on this website spend far too much time on it, and constanly post many irrelevant, pointless, timewasting, trival topics

My only regret is that my post count has now gone up by one having to say it
  • edited May 2010
People take the internets too seriously, I could care less personally. Though when you look at someone with a big ass post count you like to think that they know what they're on about
  • edited May 2010
Well, I heard you could use your post count to buy pastries (such as Gorilla Glue, Gorilla Tape, Gorilla Epoxy, and... Gorilla White-Out).
  • edited May 2010
I think the content of the posts count more than the sheer number.... But I have a pretty high post count so I dunno.
  • edited May 2010
It doesn't matter, but it can sometimes be useful for people who are new (or don't visit to the forum) to tell who the regular people are or to see which other members are also new.
  • edited May 2010
Well, considering I'm close to 3,000 posts and didn't even pay attention to reaching 50, 100, or any "landmark"... Hum, or should I say "postmark"? No, wait, that means something else...
Er... anyway, I don't really care, although I guess it's a guide of some sort?

Interestingly, I was sure I had pretty much not posted until January this year. But when searching, I noticed I did post before. First post in August, a bunch of post on the 20-22nd of August, then some in September...

I guess what my brain was remembering is that I wasn't spending every waking hour on these forums at the time.

I want to stay on 500 forever, and posting here isn't helping.
  • edited May 2010
This thread made me incredibly sad when I looked at who had voted for what. I discovered that Rather Dashing hates himself...and that makes me really really sad...:(
  • edited May 2010
Who really cares about some arbitrary number? Yes of course some people post far too often, yet a number of said people post words that are of interest to me.
  • edited May 2010
I like people with high post counts only because it means I have interacted with them the most.... its just the way things work... not that I will not get to know others overtime and like them just as much because I am sure I will.
  • edited May 2010
No, they don't matter. Post counts could be disabled and I wouldn't mind. I think for some people post counts become a sort of status symbol, which just results in pointless replies in threads. I'm a big believer in not posting unless I've got something I really want to say or express. That's the distinction I make between chat rooms and forums - chatting versus discussion.

Quite frequently I'll draft something and then just end up not posting it... it's often a useful exercise to clarify my own thoughts on something anyway, and once I've done that I don't necessarily see the need to actually post if it's not adding anything worthwhile to the discussion.

I can't imagine why anyone would think volume = status. Surely others thinking you have interesting things to contribute is the best kind of "status" there is.

I do that all the time! But often I also just post my reaction to something even though it doesn't feel interesting at the time. Sometimes it leads to funny things, like that whole stalking thing getting started in the "what do you look like?" thread.
I don't think I'd post any differently if there wasn't any post count. Except I wouldn't be posting in this thread of course.

Me three. It helps that about 95% of my posts are written in a text editor first (like this one!). It feels like playing around in a sandbox, where it's "safer" to write whatever pops into my head. Comments will usually retreat from the safety and comfort of TextEdit after some polishing, but not always.

More on point ... I started posting a lot more when The Devil's Playhouse became available for pre-order. It still comes and goes, though, depending on time, interest, and, um, mood constraints. And it's mostly in the Sam & Max forum. The big thing, though, is that I'm not as worried about how I come across in my writing anymore. Still overthink/fret about it more than I should, sure, but it doesn't feel as intimidating.

Oh, the poll! Well, I would like to show up on the DVD credits someday. So that one, I guess. But otherwise? No. Not really.

I wonder at this point who actually has the most posts, out of curiosity. It used to be the Telltale web team members by a mile, but maybe some of you have finally eclipsed us?

I wonder if people would freak out if we started hiding post counts? They are actually really unimportant, and it's often seemed to me that the simple act of showing them leads people to try and spam a bunch just to make the number bigger.

edit: I just looked it up, and hey, I have the most posts. I finally eclipsed Emily's 4,498 a little while back.

For those curious about this metric which does not matter, here are the top 10 counts in the forum database, along with their join dates (so you can figure out who has the scariest posts/day average):
    1. comments_ttgemployee_badge.png Jake -- 03/15/2005 -- 4,721
    2. comments_ttgemployee_badge.png Emily -- 10/29/2006 -- 4,498
    3. Rather Dashing -- 06/14/2008 -- 4,065
    4. Irishmile -- 06/04/2009 -- 3,061
    5. Avistew -- 06/30/2009 -- 2,961

I'd love to see both post counts and join date hidden. Not that either is an issue in this forum, but they can lead to people thinking arbitrary stuff like that matters.

I like having both, though I do miss the old days of the forum (pre Strong Bad), I felt I knew the posters more, now a lot of them have gone.

Haha no idea. I've been juggling around the top 2 or 3 total post count since the forums switched to vBulletin around the time we launched Culture Shock in 2006. Someday I imagine people will catch up and eclipse me, but Emily and I had many years in there where it seemed like we replied to almost every thread. As the games have become more popular (and more diverse as we've made more and more of them), the forums have become a lot busier with far more posts, and there are quite a few threads which don't really interest me, so it's harder to keep up.

Meh, I just post whenever I feel like posting, wheter it's useful (sometimes) or nonsense (more often)...
  • edited May 2010
What I miss on most forums is a moderation system where you can dish out rank points on a per-post basis instead of just rating a thread. Of course I might be slightly biased here... (yep, that's me at the top... :D)
