  • edited May 2010
Definitely pie. No offense, cake, but there's just more pies that I like than cakes.

oh, wait, cheesecake is cake, isn't it?

    ...

    I'll get back to you.

In their giant pit of fire of course! With all their friends to help!

Cheesecake has a crust, therefore it is a type of pie.

And you are adamant in that fact

In my book at least pies are savoury and cakes are sweet. That's why we don't call it an "apple pie" over here but an "apple tart"
  • edited May 2010
Well I love pies, but I also like certain types of cakes. The ones without mounds of frosting all over them.

Apple pie is delicious, but really only the one my mom makes (I don't like any other kind). I also like blueberry pie and pecan pie. But then I like cheesecake and hazelnut cake, and any cake without the frosting of doom on it, so maybe I do like cake better, come to think of it.

I should have guessed! It seems so blatantly obvious now.

There will inevitably come times in your life when you make a decision that is later viewed with immense regret... the important thing is to keep moving forward and not dwell on the mistakes of the past. Together, we can get through this.

I have one word for you.

    Cobbler.
  • edited May 2010
Cobbler is a person who makes shoes, which is obviously a kind of muffin, which is like a coffee cake which is a pastry. Also, I love frangipane cooked with fruit. It's a marzipan cobbler!

For me, cake vs pie depends on the cake, the pie, the occasion, the season, the phase of the moon and the colour of my socks.

That said, the lavender and honey cheesecake at the Duke of Wellington is absolutely transcendental.

Actually, in a sense, yes. A pie is basically a filling wrapped in a pastry crust. Cheesecakes are more like tarts.
  • edited May 2010
Since we're on that subject, until I moved to North America, I had never seen a pie that had crust on the top. I don't like it at all.

But it's so pretty when you do it in strips!

    Yes!

Also, many crusts in the U.S. are too thick and just not tasty at all. You really have to make them at home. I love apple pie with a thin top crust that has caramelized sugar and vanilla underneath. Delicious!

I voted pastry because raisin buns are my favorites. I like the plain, not too sweet tastes. Pies with rum cream or vanilla and fruits or berries are awesome though. My favorite is probably blueberry pie.
  • edited May 2010
I really like blueberry tarts. Where there is a bottom crust, a layer of mashed blueberries and then whole blueberries on top. But the blueberries have to be very fresh and ripe.
  • edited May 2010
apple pie with custard and icecream...

That's a winning combination, because as long as you have 2/3 of these, you cant go wrong!

Raisin buns sounds like they would be a viennoiserie, not pastry.

You know, I realise language affects this issue too. For instance, in French, you have "tarte", which is pretty much always sweet and with fruit. You have "tourtière", which has crust on top and is savoury. And you have quiche, well, you probably know what that is.
When you say "pie", I only think "tarte". So of course I don't see things the same as if it included quiches and tourtières.
Although I still like cakes best.

You know, now that I've finally looked up what "viennoiserie" actually is, I'm going with that. If I could, I'd have brioche or pain au chocolat at breakfast every day. Too bad the local bakeries seem to only make "croissants" that are either greasy as McDonald's french fries or so crisp and brittle that they're half crumbs by the time you get home.

    Cobbler.

Ooh... yay. Apple cobbler is great.

My favorite fruit flavor is lemon. Lemon bars, lemon meringue pie, lemon jell-o cake, lemon puddling, lemon icecream. idc, it's all good.
