The Doctor's best companion

edited July 2010 in General Chat
All right, which one is your favorite?

I am limiting it to the main companions from the new doctor who just because the poll does limit me to 50 choices. j/k It's just not feasible to include every single companion the doctor has ever had. Although if you have favorites from the old series, or prefer one of the companions who travelled with the doctor less consistently (i.e. Jack Harkness, Micky Smith, Rory Williams, etc) feel free to chat about it in the thread.

For example, my favorite companion of the choices would be Donna, because there was no messy love interest, she was funny, and surprisingly well written. From the old series, of the ones I've seen it was probably Turlough because of his interesting back story and because you always had to wonder if he was actually going to double cross the doctor if the stakes got too high. I also really like Rory. Good old Rory.
Poor, poor Rory. I would hide in a series of giant cakes in hopes of finding Rory, again. Although I doubt that would work. This time. :D

I, too, like Donna the most, for much the same reasons. I hope she comes back at some point, even for a cameo, but that's highly unlikely.

It was close though, because Amy is fast catching up to Donna and may end up surpassing her. Also, Rory <3.

I grew up loving K9, but I'm sure those episodes haven't aged well.

Donna. I like that she called the Doctor out and kept him from getting too... I'm not sure what to call it. I also liked that she wasn't a romantic interest. What happened to her was terrible.

Could you spoiler the new series spoilers, please? It hasn't finished here yet. The stuff about Rory, I mean.

I say Amy. She's so far the least annoying. But then you don't need to take me too seriously as I'm not a massive fan.

Donna is just like my best friend so I gotta pick her
  • edited June 2010
I think Amy is best suited to the doctor she's with, so i chose her. However, Donna is probably the best on her own.

    Sarah Jane Smith.

I think the Amy Pond character is basing itself too much on Dona Noble in her vocal nuances. It doesn't work, instead of coming off as strong and independent she sounds loud and objectionable.

I didn't like Catherine Tate's comedies, but I loved her as the Doctor's sidekick because she added a different flavour to the previous two who had always been almost over-awed by the Doctor.

Done. I was thinking there was a two week discrepency between UK and the States, but upon closer examination its a three week discrepency. My bad.
    Sarah Jane Smith.

I really liked her at first-- sort of "plucky" and much more confident. However, she sort of fell back into the pattern of all the companions of screaming a lot and being the victim for the doctor to save as time went on. Unfortunately that was the way with a lot of them in the old series.

Leela, Romana, and Ace were decidedly non-screamy. Peri was the most.
  • edited June 2010
Peri drove me crazy. And then Mel came along, and I was like FINALLY, a new companion who won't be as bad! And then she opened her mouth . . .
  • edited June 2010
I was quite pleased when the Sixth Doctor attempted to strangle Peri. Though, to be fair, she was much better in The Stranger as Miss Brown.

Now if only she had a bearable personality . . .

Speaking of which, this pole confirms the one thing I was wondering about-- there ARE people out there who liked Rose Tyler. Personally I thought she was irritating and I struggled to understand the appeal. I know some people like her, but she seemed impulsive, selfish, and frankly not all that smart-- although that last one maybe more to delivery style than the actual written lines.

Not to get all you Rose fans riled up, but for the purpose of understanding her appeal, can someone explain this to me? I don't understand what it was about her that people liked so much. Perhaps I'm just looking at the matter the wrong way.

I've mentioned this elsewhere, but I'm going to do so here.

Billie Piper as Rose was actually quite a likeable character when she was paired with Christopher Eccleston. The two had excellent chemistry, and it felt more like a father-daughter team then anything else. It was very natural, and the two really did seem to care about each other, which made it very easy to like both her and him.

But when she was paired with David Tennant, that relationship changed. No longer did they seem to actually have feelings for each other. Now they just felt like a pair of schoolgirls, messing around and trying to piss off the teachers with their wacky antics. I'm surprised they didn't try to sneak off and have a ciggy behind the bike shed. And that's when Rose stopped being likeable. Because she stopped having a loving relationship with the Doctor and started being his screechy, irritating mate who kept egging him on and getting him into trouble.

And don't even get me started on how useless she was in The Stolen Earth. Seriously, she does nothing except get the Doctor shot.*

*...alright, she saves Wilf as well, but I like to think he could have gotten out of that himself if she hadn't shown up.

EDIT: Found the article I did a while back about how D. Tennant and B. Piper didn't have as great a relationship as C. Eccleston and B. Piper. Here it is.
  • edited June 2010
@Darth Marsden: I definitely see what you're saying with the whole Tennant/Piper thing not working, and generally with the reasons why as well. I remember watching them in Tooth and Claw, wondering why the whole nature of their relationship had changed. It seemed really off to me and never really reached a point where it worked. I actually started really looking forward to him changing companions.

For me, I guess I never connected with Eccleston so much as the doctor-- hard to say why, it might have been because I watched the last five seasons totally out of order. And I think as an extension of that I had trouble connecting to Rose. I do understand a little better now why people liked her but for me she's still the sort of person that just would drive me crazy. Still, I do definitely see the father/daughter relationship there and how that could be meaningful for a lot of people.

I got Tennant as a doctor much better, although I will definitely say that I liked the way he played the doctor better after Rose was gone. In fact, losing her added a lot of depth to him. As annoying as the "unrequitted love" thing with Martha was, it brought out new, deeper sides of him that become even more apparent as he meets Donna and the resistance he shows to letting someone new in his life. Seasons 3 and 4 were my favorites (discounting the current one because its unfinished, and how it finishes will have a big affect on how I feel about it). We see a new, somewhat damaged doctor, who has made vital decisions about who he is and what he stands for. He's stronger, and a little darker, and has become much, much more interesting.

I too liked Rose better in the first season with Eccleston. I didn't dislike her relationship with Tennant, and I think the whole mischief feel was what they were going for. But all in all, I liked Donna the best. I felt that her doctor/companion relationship was right where it should be. And brought out the best in both their characters.

So far my favorite companion is Rose. I like how the doctor needed her after the horrors he had to do during the last time war, and how he needed to lose her as well. He became a better person both times.

So far I'm up in the air on Amy. I loved her in The Beast Below, in that she went against the doctor to save an endangered creature's life. So far, more hasn't been shown of that side of her personality. If they start writing more episodes for her like that, she could very easily become my favorite companion. :)

Peri was certainly annoying in her first two seasons, but i think she was starting to play it right in her last series, just before she was killed. In fact, they toned everything down: Colin Baker seems much nicer in Trial of a Timelord (just bought the boxset) than other episodes i've seen of his.

Trial of a Timelord remains one of my favorite Old!Who storylines. I just love the Valeyard sooo much. Every time we get a Dark!Doctor moment in the new series, I hope for Valeyard. *hoping face*

Sarah Jane should totally be in this poll. She's a companion and she's been in the new series, therefore she counts. Also she's generally acknowledged to be the best companion ever, or, at worst, second only to Romana.

If Sarah Jane is an option, I'm changing my vote. Since she is my all time favorite.

Yeah, i know. I'd heard that mentioned a fair few times before, so i was kinda expecting it.

My all time favorite would still be Leela. Though she's never been in the new series, either. If Sarah Jane was added, then I'd vote for her. I would currently vote for Martha, though to be fair, I haven't seen much of the new Dr. Who since the Martha episodes. I technically didn't like Tennant and Rose. Their relationship felt horrible to me. The Dr. Was a total Zaphod Beeblebrox during those episodes, so it kind of put a total sour taste in my mouth as sort of a girlfriend stealer. Even worse, since at least in Hitchhiker's guide, there was no real relationship established for Arthur before it happened. But I saw it all as Dr. who saying, "Why don't you dump this guy and hang out with me. I'm from another planet." Up until then, the Doctor, regardless of personality, was better than that.

When I was watching it, I accidentally spoiled it for myself (Curses! Wikipedia and your all-too-complete episode summaries!), but it's still an excellent storyline, even if you do know the ending.:D

Yeah, i certainly wasn't expecting Peri to die. Especially seeing as she absolutely hated the doctor at the time (i was expecting them to make up before then). I wish they would do more continuing storylines, like that, or the keys to time (still haven't watched all those!). At least the current storyline is a start!
