Possible hint for Day of the Tentacle: Special Edition?

edited July 2010 in Tales of Monkey Island
In MI2: SE when you go to the costume shop instead of a Max costume there's a Purple Tentacle costume. In the old version it's of course still the Max costume.

Could be just for kicks and giggles, I don't know. But I hope not.

It's not a hint, they replaced the Max costume because they don't have the rights for Sam and Max anymore. Just like they replaced the S&M idol in front of The Great Monkey Head (tm) in SOMI with a Purple Tentacle idol.

Does Guybrush still make a comment about the tentacle costume? In the original game, he says "I need to pick up the latest comic by Steve Purcell.". I highly doubt that's still in the remake.

I never checked in the original special edition, and I've still got 5 hours until steam releases the sequal, but in either the original SE or MI2:SE does going to classic mode actually have the environment changed? Or is Max's costume or idol somehow still there in classic mode?

the idol was still there in classic mode

That's because classic mode in the original SE is literally unchanged from the original enhanced CD release. If you unpack monkey.pak and look in the classic folder, MONKEY.000 and MONKEY.001 are there. Checking the MD5 of these files shows that they are completely identical to the enhanced CD edition. For this reason, nothing is changed and the modern mode runs exactly like the original. Classic mode runs "underneath" the new version.

Only because they don't own the rights anymore they rip out parts of the interior? Isn't that a little overcautious? Having that Max costume in the costume shop is a nice hint at Sam&Max, no matter what company owns the rights. At least, that's how I see it.

I agree Mermaid, but the corporate world is a sharky place. Everyone is on their toes about every little thing... So, I'm sure LucasArts' legal people had a conniption about it and forced the change, even though I don't think Telltale or Steve Purcell would care that they kept the Sam and Max doo-dad (I mean, come on, these re-releases are further publicity for Telltale's new Monkey Island series)

In both modes he just says "Nice Costume!".

I also don't see the reason. Steve Purcell would probably not have a problem with this costume still being there. For a game that takes pride in being "faithful to the original" and plays the reproduction of the old game to death in many parts, that is one ugly deviation in spirit. :(

Really, though, that costume should have been the altered United States Flag (tentacle costume) that you have to make for Laverne to disguise herself as a tentacle in the future. That would have been way cooler. That's ok, though. Once the details of the resource files are worked out we can patch it!

They aren't legally allowed to make anything with Sam and Max in it, even if it's new art for a special edition. They own the rights to the interpretation made for the original games, but they would need to jump through some legal hoops to make sure everything was squared away contractually-speaking. I'm sure they just thought it was too much trouble to go through for one reference, when they could just as easily use another beloved franchise.

They didn't "rip anything out", the costume is still there in the classic version.

They would have to pay Steve Purcell for the rights to use the images again. It would be another expense for a game they're only charging $10 for.

Mr. Tentacle guy? Ohhhh, I don't feel so good!

...Sorry I meant to say Ohhhh, that's a great idea for a mod.

    Make it happen modders.

Ahhh, oh well. Day of the Tentacle was always one of my absolute favorites.

Sad thing about the legal side but oh well. Gotta cover your butt.

I'm positive LucasArts is doing Maniac Mansion next.

I completely agree that if they do another special edition it'll be Maniac Mansion next. I would, however, imagine that such a thing would hinge on the sale figures for MI2:SE. We shall see.

But the hotspot has a different name. :)
And oddly enough, while Max is replaced, you can still see Sam in the exact same place as in classic mode.

Yeah. His ears disappear but you can still see the round portion of his head.

There's also a Manny portrait at Phatt Mansion. AND there was a Manny face on Secret too.

    Grim Fandango Special Edition?
    Oh God, yes!

Not gonna happen. Little easter eggs is all...just like LucasArts used to do back in the day.

Like the guy with a Loom button!

...that was an advertisement for Loom.

Or Manny in Curse of Monkey Island!

...that was an ad for the upcoming Grim Fandango.

I wonder if they even asked him? I wouldn't be surprised if he had refused to take money for a polished version of a visual gag that was in the original game (and probably put there by himself in the first place) - S&M is his property, so he gets to dictate whether (and what) they have to pay or not...

I think its more of a case of better safe than sorry from the LucasArts legal team.

Fred Flintstone Caveman is still there, were there no legal issues with that?
