I am totally pre-ordering this - Going to get it along with Shank!

Some good news indeed, have been waiting for this. I am a real fan of Hack n' Slash.

I own Diablo 2, Torchlight and Hellgate: London. So this will be a great addition to my collection, as Torchlight 2 will when it comes out next year. :)

*Update* I just remembered a few games from my Hack n' Slash list that I forgot.
I also own Titan Quest + Expansion, Sacred 1 + Expansion and Sacred 2 + Expansion.
And next year hopefully I will also own Diablo 3, and when Sacred 3 is done I will get that to. :)

Well I am off to Steam to pre-order.
I need DeathSpank for my list. :)

    @VeronicanPlay
Oh yes, i'm also looking forward to Torchlight 2. :O)

Two older but addictive Hack&Slays i remember, beside of the more obvious ones like NetHack and Diablo, were Hexplore and Dark Stone.

Huzzah! Thongs of Virtue on PC!

If you're on facebook, please "like" Hothead's facebook page. They'll release the DeathSpank soundtrack for free when they reach 4000 (currently at 3770).

I just realized; didn't Ron Gilbert once said he hated fantasy?
  • edited November 2010
Soooo... any way to get it without Steam?

I am willing to pay for both parts, but NOT if I gotta use Steam then.
  • edited November 2010
Don't look like there is, and I can't really find info if it ever will.
So I guess the chances are very slim.

Depending on where you're living it's illegal but some people just buy the steam version of a game and install a crack afterwards, so that they bought the game in a legal way without having to deal with the client all the time. Beside of this i haven't heard of a steam free version yet.

May as well just give in to the Steam tyrants and play some DeathSpank.

Man, the ending of TOV blew my mind. Don't look at the spoiler until you've seen both endings.
It's got two endings; a good ending, and a bad ending, but it's hard to tell which is which. One ending has Deathspank sacrificing himself so that Sandy can destroy his Thong, while the other has Deathspank seeing through Sandy's 'deception' and then kill her. The 'fight Sandy' ending was particularly chilling, since, at one point in the game, Sandy explained to Deathspank that the Thongs corrupt the wearer to do evil things, yet making the wearer think that what they're doing is right, as well as making them gather the rest of the Thongs. Later, Sandy also wondered why Deathspank's Thong hadn't corrupted him, and suggested that Deathspank was too lazy to be corrupted. In this ending, Deathspank killed Sandy and took the rest of the Thongs, in the name of justice. This suggests that Deathspank was corrupted by his Thong the whole time, and had actually been doing evil things the whole game, but the Thong changed his, and the player's mind, making us think we're doing good by gathering all the other thongs.

I was half expecting someone saying "Monsters? They look like monsters to you?".

The ending choice itself was a real cause for consideration, which I really liked, but the actual endings themselves were a bit underwhelming. The one tredlow talked about fit the humor, but not the story as a whole. The other one really made me mad because
Deathspank dies so Sandy can destroy the thongs, but then she chicken out and sell them to an Indiana Jones-like store. THEY KILL A GREAT CHARACTER FOR NO REASON! I'm just glad they hint at a prequel, and that I could go back and kill Sandy for that horrible ending.

    I liked the ending.

    Now i have some questions:
Is there any use for the TNT crates? I never used them and i was wondering if i missed a quest or something. Also, i got 1 spare blasting cap. I though that maybe if used in another cave you could find finally some bacon.
    Anyone knows something?

You can put it anywhere, and then shoot it to blow up foes.

    Who here has jackpot-city-review

the new PSN downloadble game Deathspank?
I hear Ron Gilbert played a huge part in helping to design it and there are some really funny moments - I keep thinking of Captain Qwark when I hear Deathspank gaming-club-review

    Definitely worth getting though

    dgekson879 is blatently Ron Gilbert...

But just in case he isn't, welcome to the forums! We were indeed interested in deathspank, there's a big old discussion thread about it here. I thought it was OK. Worth getting but not spectacular. The game I would recommend that isn't telltale but everyone on the telltale forums likes is Psychonauts.

I love how Kotaku calls it a sequel when both endings to Thongs of Virtue make it pretty clear that The Baconing has to be a prequel for the story to make any kind of sense.

I need to get back to playing Deathspank. Haven't been on it since I accidentally deleted my saved game.

The first five minutes of the game feature t
he performing of dark ritual (involving bacon!) by a bunch of weirdly shaped cultists to resurrect DeathSpank.

Sadly, doing so provokes the Baconing, and the end of the world along with it! Oops.

    Or
A guilt-ridden, old but still very attractive red headed heroine resurrects DS by giving him back the purple thong to finish the quest she couldn't...

    Or

Something silly like that. Fill in the blanks. ;)

    Play through the ending where
    you let Sandy live
. She mentions another story. I can only assume this is it.

Yeah, but there was this one game series a few years ago where, originally, the story ended in the second game, with an ending that shoulda ended the whole series. But afterwards, 2 more games were made without involvement of the original creator. These 2 games were sequels, too. Not prequels.

I forgot what the game is called, but my point is, if Hothead decided to make a sequel to a game series that Ron Gilbert intended to end in the second game, then maybe it's not such a strange idea? We're talking about Deathspank, here. It doesn't exactly make sense already.

A prequel is effectively a type of sequel, at least in terms of chronological release order.

The way I see it, there are three types of 'installments'; a sequel, a prequel, and a squeakquel. A sequel takes place after the previous one. A prequel takes place before the previous one. And a squeakquel is something made by horrible people who should be punched.

    What's this??

    7eUBPl.jpg

Did they choose the bad ending to be canon?

To tell the truth, im not so excited about this, besides the fact that Ron isn't involved, it seems it's gonna be all sci-fi and futuristic.
  • edited June 2011
Meh, it's not inviting at all.

If Ron was involved, it would be a no-brainer buy.

In line of principle, not involving Ron could still results in an enjoyable game even if probably less enjoyable, as Monkey Island 3. Reviews will tell us if this one is the case.

But I take particular exception for this one: this is different from MI in that DeathSpank as a character/concept was not created during the development of the game, but previously created for the grumpygamer blog by Ronzo and Kutshaialkkkk (sorry, can't spell the name :P)

If they're able to make another game, without even telling Ronzo (as he wrote on the blog), I guess he had to cede them the rights of the character in order to make the first game. This is frankly bad!
  • edited June 2011
I'm excited. Yes, Ron is not involved, and it really sucks that they didn't even tell him about it, but it still looks interesting. I'm not gonna judge it yet.

Also, this is actually the first DeathSpank game with a PC version announced FIRST!

    Didn't DeathSpank
    die in the good ending?

That's why im saying they made the bad ending canon. It makes no sense at all,
the narrator of the first games is an old Sandy, that appears again at the end of the game (if you choose the bad ending the narrator is now Deathspank wich makes no sense since it started with old Sandy), but in this game Deathspank seems to never have been dead, and he has Sandy's head in a jar. (Her name was Sandy, right? IM just saying Sandy but i don't even remember if that was her name, ho)

Well, actually, the fact that she was the narrator was only revealed IF you get the good ending. This might mean that, if you get the bad ending, the narrator will remain anonymous. Or, it could just be interpreted as DeathSpank being the one who's telling the story now.
