Warhammer 40k, do any of you play?

edited August 2010 in General Chat
I was wondering how many people here play WH40k and if so what army you use and how long? Also any strategy you use or anything in general you're proud of you did in the game. Along with any tips of pointers.

I've been playing for 3-5 months now and I use an Ork army.
I don't have a strategy yet other then using my main army to confront them in the middle and with them usually leaving special units behind a bit I attack from behind using Snirkrot and have them fight a two sided battle.
Using that tatic once during a 2v2 battle where I was VS a Space Marine and Tau army and teamed up with a Space Marine army I obliterated the Space Marine army I was VS with just Snirk Rot. My Boyz didn't even get to fighting them yet.

I was also wondering if there were any tips veterans could give a new player? As I've done a total of about 8 matches all just to the death with no objectives.

    Occasionally I play. I'm a Tau guy.

I used to play and then I became broke, so now I don't play...I'd love to start up again.

I was interested in playing, but I didn't feel it was worth the investment of both time and money. I do enjoy the RTS PC games based on it though. :D

I play in theory, but I prefer the painting and modelling to the gaming. One day I will actually field my Tyranids. One day. The same day I finally decide on my Hive Fleet name and colourscheme.

It depends. I orignally started to buy the models as just to have random stuff to paint because I was bored, Then one of my other friends had some Space Marines from fourth edition apparently so I bought the Assault on black reach and gave the Space Marines to my fiance then just one by one all my friends fell to playing WH40k.

However if you don't have friends easily willing to commit I wouldn't say it's worth it unless you're area's got some freeplay tourneys and such. Also, ebay is amazing for WH40k. I found some $100 pieces going for $20.

Also, DoW1 or 2? And if one which expansions? As I can't run 2, so I play the hell out of 1 when I'm in an RTS mood.

Tryanids are a great army to have, especially in the current edition. Mostly because their weapon skills (I believe, I was just talking about this with my friends late last night) stack for some reason. It makes them crazy strong.

Both, but I don't own them yet. My friend has them, and I've been meaning to pick them up. Almost grabbed them when they were on sale on Steam, but ended up not getting them.

You should've. I bought mine on the THQ sale when it was like $40. So I got a bunch of free games with my DoW is how I see it.

My brother used to get a lot of warhammer stuff. Out of everything warhammer-based that I played with him, I have to say that Blood Bowl was definately the best Warhammer game there is, but I suppose that's not quite the same as Warhammer 40K is it? I don't really know enough about it...
  • edited August 2010
Blood Bowl has very little/nothing to do with 40k, about the only things they have in common are a few of the races. Blood Bowl is like an alternate universe for Warhammer Fantasy Battle where everyone gets along because they settle their differences with football. And it's also an awesome game.

I've yet toplay Blood Bowl, but my friends and I are thinking of picking it up once we get out armies built more.

Is the Blood Bowl PC game any good? I was thinking of buying it once it comes down in price.

I haven't played it, but my flatmate (who is also a total Warhammer geek) has it for the 360 and thinks that it's fantastic. I've been meaning to pick it up for the PC, wonder what the price is like on Steam...
  • edited August 2010
It's like 20 or 30 right now on STEAM. I've been meaning to pick it up too but I'm waiting to upgrade my PC first.

I've heard mixed reviews for both the PC and Xbox veersions. I was going to get it for the PC, but saw i cheap for the DS and decided to go for that instead. The DS version is good enough for me, but no where near as advanced as for the other consoles (obviously) and therefore limits it quite a bit. I like it though. Even though I've yet to win a match. That's more to do with how much I suck at the game though.

I got into the Lord of the Rings shortly after the movie came out. Dad and I would go to Games Workshop each Sunday and go through the Beginner's Sunday courses they ran there.

It fell apart quickly, though. We both want to get back into it, the prices have shot up since 2001, though.

We both play plenty of Dawn of War still. I'm trying to get him off of the RPGs for a few minutes so we can play it on LAN. And he's trying to steal my computer (it's the only one that runs DoWII in the house).

I used to play 40k, but my Tyranids and Orks all got left in Portland years ago. Wonder what ever happened to them. Also there was a great spin-off game Necromunda that I played quite a bit, cheaper than 40k since you only had to field a squad instead of a whole army, and rules suited to small-scale combat. Wish I still had the 'nids, they were a great army, even if I never quite finished painting the Hormogaunts (wait, is it Hormagaunts or Hormogaunts?) Anyway, the Gaunts that are, or were, melee only.

There was a major rules overhaul at some point when I played, and I liked it because it made the game play more quickly, so you could actually get in a couple of games instead of spending 5 hours on one because of the complicated Psyker rules, everyone drawing cards and blah blah blah. No doubt some of the community was screaming about how the end was nigh.

Cards? And Psykers seemed very easy to understand to me.

Sorry if I don't recall all of the details, this was sometime in the mid-late 90s. There was a whole phase each turn for Psychic abilities that involved dealing out cards based on the strength of the Psykers you controlled, special trump cards in the deck that did things...it was a nightmare. I much appreciated (Whateverth) Edition for streamlining that nonsense into something easily understandable and quick in execution.
  • edited August 2010
Ah, yeah that sounds confusing. I think 4th edition got rid of cards as Orks and Tau are currently fourth edition and have no cards mentioned in their books.

Both, they are quite different, the original has base building unlike it's sequel which is entirely squad management. The second is quite like Diablo in a lot of ways (loot, leveling, etc). I think that the 2nd expansion to DoW was supposed to be the best, though I haven't played the 3rd. All of DoW is great though.

The Second one is more so like the table top game, in a way. I've played both, but currently on my comp can only play 1.
    And third DoW?
  • edited August 2010
WAIT! Do not buy Blood Bowl for 360! Im very active at the BB forum and everyone is complaining about all the glitches. You shoud wait for the Legendary Edition (PC) whic comes out in the ned of the year with 11 new races, atotal of 21

    third expansion, Soulstorm.

I used to collect more than play. I enjoyed the painting.

Ah. I kind of like Soul Storm but everytime I play against Necrons with comps on standard seem to revive 80% of their armies all the time, but not count towards their current army spawn so I've like 4 waves of Necrons in my base at once keep respawning.
