Alien Swarm is a pretty good one, although it is multiplayer only, but you can do an offline practice. That's free on Steam, so you won't find any viruses there. It can get a bit glitchy depending on who's server you're playing on, though. Hope that helps.
I really enjoy Stepmania, which is basically a free emulator for Dance Dance Revolution. The only thing is you have to find your own songpacks for it, but that's not too hard, and there's a lot of variety out there. I play with a keyboard or gamepad, but it's possible to play with a dance pad if you have a console pad and a USB adapter.
Depending on whether you have a nostalgia for the old SCUMM engine verb games like Monkey Island 1 and 2, Maniac Mansion, DoTT, etc, you may enjoy Beneath a Steel Sky
It is available for free at the Scummvm website I linked above. You also need to play it using ScummVM.
On gog.com I got Beneath a Steel Sky, Lure of the Temptress and Teen Agent for free.
I don't know if that is for people who buy something on their store first, as I only bought 1 game from there so far. Or if its for all people who make an account on their site.
Ohh and if they are good, I don't really know. All I saw at the time was "free" so I have had no time to try them out yet.
I am yet to play it, but the King's Quest fan game - "The Silver Lining'' has gotten the legal go-ahead, and episode 1 has already been released, and it's apparently pretty good (even if it does have under an hour's worth of gameplay). The second episode isn't far off either, and it apparently has approximately 4 hours worth of gameplay (from what the makers have said), so that's a significant amount more than the first one.
There's a lot of neat freeware games I like, like Cave Story, I Wanna Be The Guy, and Eternal Daughter.
There was this list of good freeware games I used to have, including flash games. I wish I could find that list again, though http://indiegames.com is good for looking out for them.
Any and everything by Ben 'Yahtzee' Croshaw. (Except the Arthur Yahtzee trilogy.) Make sure you grab the Special Editions, they're just as free as the normal ones.

Has anybody on here actually downloaded this to know if it is safe or not?
Also thanks for the rcommendations.
Keep 'em coming.
And even a lot of the "promo" ones are still good.
Also Tribes 1 and 2 are free but the official servers are down due to the company going out of buisness but a few fans brought the game back on line through their own servers and is perfectly legit.
FEAR's Multiplayer is the game's Demo so you can play online with a bunch of people for free. And Postal 2 Share the Pain's demo is it's full multiplayer.
For MMO's Lord of the Rings online just went free to play.
Speaking of this, if anyone starts playing LOTRO, my server is Meneldor and my main character is called Gragdesh.
I've been playing since the Beta, I stopped a while ago but I'm about to start it up with my fiance. I'm on Windfola right now, I might switch servers due to I want to reset my characters.

I was going to buy a Lifetime account but went with my Wii instead, and I don't regret it. Perhaps some of the most fun I've had with console gaming this generation. I was then going to re-life subscribe when I got Mines of Moria special edition but forgot and just signed up normally. So, I had lost it.
I might re-sub so I can do MvP. I dislike how MvP is for subbers only. I wish you could just buy an MvP slot with Turbine points or something.

It's a simulator, not an emulator. There is a difference. Also, free at-least-halfway-decent songpacks are available from http://dwiextreme.com.
FREE games
Then I'd recommend Sam and Max Season One Episode Four: Abe Lincoln Must Die.
Just downloaded the first two of those now... looks like fun

Yeah, it's perfectly safe... (if a bit boring.)
Ugh, Battlefield Heroes was meh.

Also Steam is currently offering a few free games depending on if you have a Nvidia or ATI/AMD graphics card.
Nvidia
- Half-Life 2: Deathmatch
- Half-Life 2: Lost Coast
- Portal: First Slice
AMD/ATI
- Half-Life 2: Deathmatch
- Half-Life 2: Lost Coast
Those have been offered for 2 and a half years, so currently is a bit of an understatement.

The only Akuji game I know is Akuji the Heartless on Playstation. Shouldn't you mean that instead of Akuji the Demon? Here's the link:

No, click and look at the link, the game title is Akuji the Demon and is a completely different and free game.
