Doodo's Musical Selections (Formerly Evanescence's Third Album)

edited March 2011 in General Chat
I'm in a rock mood now, I'm sick of Aqua and Avril Lavigne and I've moved onto this kind of stuff for now...

i heard a couple of there songs, they are pretty good

Cool. I liked their first album, and I'm not ashamed to admit it anymore. I didn't like their second as much, though. Maybe because I wasn't fourteen anymore, but it did have a different sound.

I like the rock sound better, I can see some people thinking its all angry teen music but really I think its well done rock music with just a tad bit of angst. I listened to some of the second CD it was very artsy and had some moving songs but so far its lacking that rock core.

The band has always reminded me of Within Temptation. (2011 new CD)

I absolutely love their first album, even if I no longer have the cojones to listen to it publicly. :p I could kinda get away with it when I was 17 and at the tail-end of my goth phase, but now it's one of those "only with headphones" albums for me.

Never did listen to their second one, as I had discovered Within Temptation by then (highly recommend them if you like Evanescence), and I liked the fact that I could listen to them around other people without blustering out an explanation.

EDIT: Oop, ya beat me to it. Nice choice, sir.

I've got to listen to them. I think I heard one or two of their songs and liked them.

    :p

I've known them a while but the connection to their music didn't develop until recently. Got anymore suggestions? Paramore is ok but it's way more punk than gothic rock. They're also drowning in mainstream...

I almost forgot about FlyLeaf, a little bit heavier but it's still good.

Still Within Temptation has a different feel to it that I like more, and I still think Evanescence has a unique sound.

I do love some Flyleaf. I had been dragged to a christian music festival for a weekend (I'm a rather dedicated Pagan, so it was... awkward) with some friends last year, and Flyleaf played there. I've gotta say, they rocked the proverbial domicile harder than I'd have ever expected at such an event. It was so funny to see an actual mosh pit form there.

As for suggestions, I've got a couple more: Lacuna Coil, although they lack the symphonic sound, are amazing.

If you want something less conventional, Akira Yamaoka and Mary McGlynn. It's a shame that Yamaoka is done with Silent Hill, because when those two get together for a soundtrack session, it's pure aural magic. Again, no symphonics, but as far as hard rock with a female vocalist goes, it's easily up there with the best.

On the somewhat softer side, Emilie Autumn has been topping my playlist recently. Like Evanescence, the Hot Topic fanbase gives her a bad rep, but I'm confident in saying that she's one of the most talented current musicians out there.

Not going to lie, I liked their first album. Then that was it, and then I went off and discovered Nightwish, now I journey and found the old lead singer for Nightwish has her own band which now I listen too.
  • edited September 2010
^ Oh man, I forgot Nightwish.
  • edited September 2010
LOL what can one say, awesome music.

    Whoa, Emilie Autumn is different.

So much to look into now though, like the band history, etc etc...

I still love to listen to the first album of Evanescence. But the one guy with talent in the band left (or was kicked out) and the rest of their albums are quite bad.

Within Temptation: Great band, the first 2 albums (Enter (+ the EP The Dance), Mother Earth) are real classics. Everything after "The Silent Force" got a little wors but I could still listen to it with joy.

Nightwish: They have a great series of albums. I don't like their first record "Angels Fall First" and their last album with Tarja "Once" too much though. The ones between those two (Oceanborn, Wishmaster, Century Child, [Over The Hills And Far Away]) are really recommendable if you like symphonic metal.

Emilie Autumn: Really good music on her Opheliac-album. I cannot get into the rest of her records though.

I'm not really into Evanescence. I always think their individual tracks don't have different themes so they end up sounding really similar. Plus, having a duet with raprockers is a no-no. But, oh well, hope you guys expecting to listen to more of this band will get what you want.

As for me, the new Iron Maiden album is pretty great.

Not really into the drama of Evanesence or Nightwish, but if we're talking female fronted bands, I loved The Distillers 2nd album Sing Sing Death House

I haven't really listened to Evanescence since high school, but since then I've kind of decided they're the more mainstream version of like, Within Temptation and Nightwish, who I love. I'll check out their new cd tho, see what I think.

Epica's another band you can try if you're looking for similar stuff.

You know, now that doodo!'s avatar reminds me... Whenever I see this picture of Amy Lee I get reminded of this one.

Evanescence is nice. Prefer it much above Within Temptation (which haul from my own country though). Nightwish is nice too, but hit and miss.

Epica is like Nightwish, hit and miss. Lacuna Coil is pretty good though.

Some other suggestions if you go that way:
Theatres Des Vampires, Inkubbbus Sukkubus, Adema (That's more Punk though), Ayreon, Cradle of Filth, Kidneythieves, Leaves' Eyes.

Personally I prefer going more electrical than metal, and more dark than said bands above. If you too you might want to check out bands like:
Life Cried, Suicide Commando, FGFC820, The Retrosic, X-Fusion.

Well, enough to tear upon for a while I guess... what exactly do you like so much about this style of music?
  • edited September 2010
^ Ooh, I love Leaves' Eyes. (and Last.FM for introducing me to them through their Within Temptation channel)

In fact, there ya go. Last.FM, Within Temptation channel. It's a gold mine for what you're looking for. It'd make more sense to use the Evanescence channel, but it tends to be filled with random nu-metal.

So, Pandora, but available outside of the US, eh? Nice.

So far the best song I've found on CD two...

I love this song, the only part I'm not crazy about is the giggle at the end.

To be honest even though I've enjoyed Gothic rock, metal, I still appreciate some POP music.

Very different types of music, for different days.

    Call Me When You're Sober
  • edited October 2010
Useless trivia: That song was a response to her leaving her husband (lead singer of Seether) over issues of alcohol and drug addiction.

Talking about that, heard their duet "Broken"?
  • edited October 2010
It's a old song, then again, most the songs I've listed are.

It's pretty good, I like that it's mellow. Its got feeling.

I have lost track on music since WAY too long, are there any other groups in the lines of Linking Park - Limp Buiskit - Korn - Evanescence - System of a down - Nickleback - Creed - Three Days Grace?

I heard recently Linking Park and they lost it, and Korn lost it almost immediatly, just heard a song from Flyleaf and seems cool.
  • edited October 2010
Well, that's a list of artists I would never dump together.

But if you like Nickleback definitely check out Theory of a Deadman.

As for TDG- check out Adema or Seether.

I bought 3 out of 4 Within Temptation albums and I'm loving it. I'd recommend them. They got a new album coming out soon.

I could suggest other bands but they'd be out of genre. There's a few bands I like, but I'm not a music buff.

Be sure to hunt down their singles and EPs, too. They've got a ton of amazing songs that aren't on their LPs.

Evanescence The Open Door is a very bland album.

Huh, I think it features some of their best work...

    Oh well...

Call me When You're Sober is one of my favorite songs. I listen to the whole album on occasion but It just felt too similar to me. I didn't have enough variety. :)
  • edited October 2010
Well, better a whole album with less variety which is good than an album where 75% is bad, even if the other 25% is good, because they tried just too much.

Which some of the other CD's are IMO (and Within Temptation all the time, which is why I prefer Evanescence above them).

I like Rock/Metal, I also used to be an Aqua fan and a real pop person, bot now I have to listen to some head banger music now a days. I guess I just grew more dark and brooding, but I don't know. All I do know is I love music with a real beat.

I like metal the most like Sonata Arctica, Epica and Disturbed.
I also like hard rock like Lordi. :)

^^^ Yep, :) Thanks for the suggestion. Yeah, I'm thinking about trying some pop again soon but I really do like my harder music. I grew darker because of women...:p I've just learned to basically say forg@#$ it.
  • edited October 2010
I do still hear pop from time to time, and I still like it. But I always go back to my headbanger music. :)

It's funny because I was always a pop fan, 80s music guy, fun stupid music kind of guy and now all the sudden I'm into "headbanger" music.

LOL, one of my favorite Aqua songs is actually their new Christmas song though.

Evascence is actually kind of wearing thin off of me and I'm moving more towards this orchestra rock type of thing, or something with a Within Temptation spirit and sound to it.

It's really sort of scary, in one day I went from POP music, Avril Lavigne, to metal...

I think Within Temptation must really be a cult of some sort after all :p
  • edited October 2010
My favourite Aqua song is Back from Mars. :D

And I do listen to Within Temptation my self, I love The Howling, What have you Done, Stand my Ground, Angels, and It's the Fear.

Haha, that's exactly what happened to me... I never paid any mind to orchestral rock until WT, and now it's my preferred genre. Of course, they haven't been "metal" in years, and only sometimes "rock", but it's still a far cry from my old tastes. Now I can hardly stand most generic radio rock, when it used to be all I listened to.

Confession: My formative years were spent listening to pop. Not the good stuff that's considered classic now. I'm talking boy band type pop. I still look back to my childhood with shame. The day a time machine is invented, I'm going back and giving myself my current music collection (transferred to tape, of course :p).
