Name other great time travel narratives

edited January 2011 in General Chat
With the upcoming BttF game and its active board I figured there are probably a lot of time traveling fans out here.

So I figured, let's share some other great movies/books/games/series episodes that revolve around time traveling to keep us busy till the game is out.

-Obviously we have the BttF trilogy.

-But another great time travel movie that implements it probably as well as BttF did, is Timecrimes. It's a spanish movie but really great.

-Also the X-files season 6(or 5 can't remember) episode Monday is really great in which Mulder relives the same day. And yeah....it has one really epic moment but I will noit spoil it.

-Quahog Day
To be honest, not one I would recommend first hand. Yes, it implements the time travel element well enough but only to tell this love story. And I am not too fond of romance movies. >_>

-Butterfly Effect and Donnie Darko
Both good movies.

Then there is this book I am curious about albeit it's pretty long:

Two time travel related films that I've always liked are Frequency and 12:01
  • edited October 2010
Ah yes. Frequency is another great one. =D

    Doctor Who.

Oh man, I don't have the time right now to make a post that does this topic justice. I'll be writing a massive one for this thread, though. I'll probably post it later today.

I think that's the only one I need to skip as there are just too many episodes to check out. =(

The new series is a great place to start. :D

The Futurama episode 'Roswell that Ends Well'. An excellent, clever, and hilarious episode. It's certainly one of my favourite Futurama episodes.

And also, from the new season - 'The Late Philip J. Fry'. A great episode that focuses around time travel. This episode lives up to 'Roswell that Ends Well' in quality, though, unlike that episode, 'The Late Philip J. Fry' isn't purely focused on humour - there are also some deeper, more profound story-telling elements in the mix. And, towards the end of the episode, there's just a moment that's well... just nice. But, anyway, you'll just have to watch it for yourself. It was one of my favourite episodes of the season, without a shadow of a doubt.

    TMNT III

    I am joking...

There are a lot of these, but I'll just post the five that come to mind at the moment.

A Sound of Thunder by Ray Bradbury
The Time Machine by H.G. Wells
    Sphere
The first two Terminator flicks utilized the whole time travel thing fairly well too.
    Star Trek: First Contact

Flight of the Navigator (I've always loved that movie as a child. It's been a longtime since I don't see it, I guess it hasn't aged very well)
Star Trek IV: The voyage home
    Star Trek (2009)
    12 monkeys

I am going to check out those Futarama eps and that new Star Trek movie.

Another amazing sci-fi story, although technically there is no time-travel, is Man from Earth. Check that one out.

I'm going to go with Primer, a great indie movie that goes out of its way to research physics and depict time travel as realistically as possible.

Unsurprisingly, it's on the list of the most confusing movies ever made.

I wanted to watch Primer but it being confusing is what holds me back.

Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency has Time Travel elements in it, especially since a good portion of it was based off of Douglas Adams' Doctor Who script (Some things are directly pulled from it.)

I just watched the 'Late Philip J. Fry'.
One thing I didn't get is how Leela got in possession of the card...

The card fell "out of" the time machine and into the Planet Express building "before" the time machine stopped. The time machine wasn't "moving" in physical space, so the card popped up in the same spot, some years after they started time traveling but before they stopped.

There is also the movie Time after time. It's about H.G Wells going to the future chasing Jack the Ripper. I haven't mentioned it up 'till now since I didn't really like it. I was waiting for an amazing plot twist but it never happened.

It has however great acting and a nice cast. The actress for Clara from BttF3 has a lead role in it.

And for the sake of it I am going to mention Timecrimes again. I am sure you'll all love that one.

Owh and the Journeyman Project games are noted. Thanks for the recommendation.

Timeline was an excellent movie. The book was written by the same guy who wrote Jurassic Park.

My favorite time travel book is "To Say Nothing of the Dog" by Connie Willis. It's awesome lighthearted fun, if you can get past the (intentionally) confusing opening. Also good is "Doomsday Book" but it's more serious.

Time Bandits is a great movie, however not as good Terry Gilliam's later Brazil and Baron Munchausen.
  • edited October 2010
Harry Potter and the prisoner of Azkaban also had a little time travel
    Star Trek: Generations

I don't remember quite well, but I think the Austin Powers movies have some time travel somewhere

And I think that the fourth movie Origami said on the OP is Groundhog day

I haven't seen the original, but I thought the newer one was pretty awesome.

As for Time travelling media, given I was beaten to Doctor Who, I'm going with: The Hitchhikers Guide to The galaxy Trilogy (of 4).

Ooh, I love time travel stories. Besides things mentioned, I kind of liked Time Cop. Also loved the old tv show Early Edition.

"The Girl who Leapt Through Time"

Unlike other time travel narratives (that I'm aware of) this movie shows how much can change if someone travels through time in days and hours as opposed to the more common decades or centuries.

    Very nice one!

    @Friar
In my opinion the original is way better.

The Girl who Leapt Through Time

I KNEW I missed something! Yeah I have seen it. And it's great. Especially for BttF fans.

Here is another good one Déjà Vu.

    Also noted.

Owh, we forgot to name this one.

Professor Layton and the Unwound Future. 0_o

Has anyone mentioned the Bill and Ted movies yet? They're a bit goofy, but entertaining.

Also, some I forgot on my first set of additions to the list:

The End of Eternity by Isaac Asimov
    Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut
    Outlander by Diana Gabaldon
    and of course,
Army of Darkness (Can't believe I forgot this one)

Since I'm watching it right now, Dragonball Z has a neat time-traveling arc.

Justice League - Time, Warped - if anyone's into the animated series, Batman: Beyond, anything like that, it's AWESOME!! :D

I am surprised no one mentioned Day of the Tentacle.

That one incorporated time travel elements right?
    And how well?
  • edited November 2010
Owh man. I just watched Frequency again. That movie is so good!

You beat me to it. IIRC the first movie didn't exactly have any time travel if being frozen for 3 decades is not accepted. In the second movie they went back to the 60's and later on 5 minutes back to "a saved checkpoint" to have another go at the finale. In the third movie they went to the 70's.

Has anyone seen Black Adder's time traveling episode? That one is quite hilarious but what else can you expect from Rowan Atkinson :D

Hexwood by Diana Wynne-Jones is simply incredible. Not sure if it's time-travel necessarily, but close enough.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who loves that -somehow minor and not well known- movie
