anyone else getting epic mickey?

edited December 2010 in General Chat
I personally wasn't that impressed with epic mickey back when they showed it a E3, but I watched the reviews from IGN and Gametrailers and BOTH sites compared epic mickey to my favorite platformer of all time! Banjo-Kazooie!! today I ran over to gamestop and preordered ^_^ and now i can't wait till tuesday, this is going to be AWESOME!!!!

I'll get it too. I don't know if I'll find the time to play it but I feel as if it should be in my gaming collection. It looks very artistic and different. And I like different. I also admire Warren Spector for the enthusiasm he showed for the project.

    I am also a semi-disney fan.

I am also looking really forward to Kirby Epic Yarn and DKC Returns. Other platformers with their distinctive own style. I love Nintendo's creativity. :)

I really have little interest in it... but I am sure I will get it for the kids eventually

    Then you'll become this Dad.

Kids: Daddy can we play some Epic Mickey?
Dad: AWRAWRAWR! Epic Mickey is MINE to play! MINE. Go outside you little pricks!
Kids: But Daddy...it was our Christmas present.
Dad: OUTSIDE! >grabs shotgun BOOM! BOOM!

It's on my Christmas list, but I probably will buy it eventually if I don't receive it as a gift.

I also have a friend who is very wishy washy when it comes to consoles, but she's considering getting a Wii for Epic Mickey alone, which is pretty impressive.

I generally don't buy a game for the "story" or "world", but in this case?

Warren Specter knows his shit. You have to respect that. In many ways, this is the Disney game for those who appreciate and love the history of Walt Disney. Every screenshot makes me squeal like a schoolgirl with glee whenever I see a background element or character from the earliest parts of Disney's creative history. This game is going to be, at the very least, an incredible interactive tour of the Disney archives, and that's good enough for me to make a Day 1 purchase, especially with the prevalence of Oswald(whose cartoons I've loved for years now).

I couldn't agree more... i've been watching gameplay and there are sooooo many characters that i've forgotten about... the mad scientist guy, the sneaking ghost guy, and quite a few others... i'm positive that every time I move a corner i'll be running into another piece of nostalgia

on another note, i've never seen an oswald cartoon, any idea where I can watch them?

Here's my favorite. There's a DVD set of the shorts, with a fantastic documentary about Ubb Iwerks(often considered the "real" creator of Mickey Mouse, and historically must be considered at least as influential early on as Disney himself).

I won't get the game because I don't have a Wii but I'm having trouble not getting excited about it.
  • edited November 2010
No, becuz its wii only and wiis are disgusting garbage

Nah, just kidding. Though I don't have a wii, so I won't be buying it. It's a shame, too, because it actually looks better than Kingdom Hearts, in my opinion.
  • edited November 2010
I'll be getting it for the, uhh "kids" for Christmas.
  • edited November 2010
It does look interesting; I remember hearing about it a while back and didn't think it was going to be very good, but my opinion changed after seeing some of the ads. So maybe I'll get it. Thinking about it.

Not sure what to expect though, as I've never really played anything like that on the Wii before. All I have are things like Wii Play, Wii Sports, Wii Fit... basically the games that come with the hardware!

Holy S*** it was compared to banjo kazooie im buying.

actually it has been proven mickey can work well in a dark world filled with disney characters already. Kingdom hearts anyone.
This game has many similarities to that such as mickeys heart playing a key role.

I'll get it eventually. Maybe not immediately; it all depends on circumstances. I played a demo of it at PAX and it was pretty amaze. The only issue I could think of off the top of my head is that mickey's jump seemed to drop faster than it should have, leaving for getting used to some unusual platforming. But yeah, it was pretty good otherwise.

Hmm maybe, in that case I will buy it the next year.

That may have been an issue of remaining true to the animation of the original cartoons. I've noticed that a lot of animation has a(somewhat subdued) Ubb Iwerks flow to it, and perhaps by comparing the flow of jumps in original Disney shorts to the jumps of Mickey in the game would yield some sort of similarity(and in that case, the jump would be accounted for in gameplay).

I will if my sister let me play her Wii
  • edited November 2010
I got the game earlier today and from what I've played, it is definitely very true to Disney's history and Oswald is brilliant so far.

However, it is nothing like Banjo Kazooie (or Tooie) at all to me...
  • edited November 2010
Hoping to get it for Christmas, otherwise I'll be picking it up at my earliest opportunity.

My sister has been whinging for ages that no Mickey Mouse games exist for new consoles. She also wants a Wii for christmas. Therefore, I shall be buying her Epic Mickey.

Kingdom Hearts doesnt count as a mickey mouse game. Ok I gues not the first one since he gets probably less than a minute of screentime, but in all the others he plays a pretty good role.

Those hoping for a banjo Kazooie type experience will be disappointed as its not like that at all and probably the worst game I've played all year. People seem to let a lot of shoddy design choices, poor art and clunky control issues slide on this one for some reason. Well that reason is Warren Spector but I don't think that's a good enough argument

    I second Dashing's Motion.

Honestly from what I played at Pax it was a delight, I like the old cartoons, and thought it was very Nostalgic from the get go. The controls were a little clunky but I just passed it off as a demo.

By the way, and don't hate me for this, but who is Warren Spector? I know he created this game, but what are his past projects?
  • edited November 2010
The first one that comes to mind for me is Deus Ex
  • edited November 2010
The Wing Commander games and Thief: Deadly Shadows are other major titles. And you can't forget System Shock. You might forget his work on the Ultima series, but you shouldn't.
  • edited November 2010
Okay, so the guy who made System Shock is making a Mickey Mouse game?

    Dammit, I need a wii.
  • edited November 2010
If by "made" you mean "co-designed", then yes. And then, only if by "making" you mean "made", considering the damn thing is a day from release. He's well past actually working on it.

Going to wait and see if anyone gets it for Christmas, I am pretty sure someone had it on their Christmas list.

And no it's not me, there was mostly Books and CD's on my list. :p

Care to elaborate in a more substantial way?

Sure. There's a lot wrong with the game in my opinion.

Firstly for me at least the largely empty and uninteresting environments are a real turn off. Sure there are many recognisable elements but they're all quite sterile and not combined in any interesting way and other than those classic objects the environments are nothing but uninteresting walls and corridors reminiscent of old platformers that en lieu of having interesting environments with natural boundaries just close everything in.

Movement is alright but clunky. It has the worst camera of any platformer I've played in a long time and movements don't blend so there is noticeable jumps in animation between actions. Plus the transition between movement and painting while moving isn't smooth and just feels sloppy. The wii cursor is also the jerkiest I've ever seen it. At first I thought something had gone wrong with my home setup so I quit and loaded up SMG2 but it was perfect, Epic Mickey just has a really jerky pointer.

Other than that the game constantly holds your hand and tells you what to do. Walk up to an item to interact with? The game pops up with a message suggesting that you should interact with it and how to do it. Of course that's fine when the game is teaching you... this isn't the first time though, this is infact the 8th time you've done this exact same thing. Exploration and discovery is constantly killed and interrupted by the game just telling you useless information most of which it has already told you.

The binary choices you get in the game (hmm should I tick off a box for the good ending or bad ending? Decisions decisions) at least early on are just as poor. Before you can make a choice the game tells you you're gonna make a choice, how to make that choice and what those choices are... It's less like playing a game and more like reading the worlds lamest choose your own adventure.

I'm sure the last two issues I brought up disappear later in the game but once I wanted to punch Spector for creating this abomination I stopped playing.

Graphically the game is pretty middle/lower range on the wii. I can't for the life of me work out what other people see in it. Even if you are just turned on by dark Mickey compare it to Kingdom Hearts, a much older game on a lesser or at least equal system. Epic Mickey is just dull.

So basically my issues with the game come down to
    Poor control
    Boring gameplay
    Handholding game design
    Generic uninspired levels
    Dull visuals

From the people I know who like the game most of their enjoyment comes from the story and their attachment to the period of animation. I didn't think much of the story myself but if it grabs you it apparently keeps adding enough to motivate you. And as for the nostalgia factor it wasn't enough to make me overlook the poor quality of everything else.

^ Is there anything in the game that hearkens back to the amazing concept art they released some time ago?
  • edited November 2010
Getting it first thing tomorrow. SO EXCITED.

Some of the reviews I've seen have described it as a decent platformer with some wonky issues that still manages to be fun. Which is what most people say about Psychonauts. Which is a plus as far as I'm concerned because Psychonauts is one of my favorite games ever.

Not that I've found. I think after that art came out it was revealed that it was for the pitch Disney was given and not from the actual game's pre production.

Put it this way I play Pyschonauts a few times a year. I've got at least 4 copies with one of them signed by Tim. Epic Mickey has nothing similar to Psychonauts.

That's a crying shame. I've always had a soft spot for steampunk, and mixing that with Disney seemed like a brilliant way to "darken" Mickey without alienating the young'ns.

I just got the game ^_^ so far i've only checked perused the guide, but the game looks AMAZING!!

Just got it! Can't wait to play after work!

My inner disney fan DEMAND IT

Besides, reviews compare it more like a modernised N64 plataformer which makes me happy, sicne pltaformers have been pretty rush-pased these years (except DKR which is both rusha nd slow paced).

As a HUGE fan of Disney, I can say this hits all the marks I was looking for. It's not a perfect game, sure, but I'm loving it so far. I've already traveled through a twisted version of It's A Small World and loved every second of that! Can't wait to play more.

So far my impressions are thus:

    Camera: sucks
    Everything else: awesome

And like every game that gives you choices I'm finding myself going the goody-two-shoes route already. I just can't bring myself to be a jerk. :(
