The OddBoxx Discussion Thread!

edited December 2010 in General Chat
As some of you may know, there's a collection of every single OddWorld Game released thus far called The OddBoxx coming out in just a few days. I'm fairly new to the OddWorld series and the only prior knowledge I have of it is seeing pictures of Abe online. I did a little research of the series and it sounds very interesting, I like continuities that don't focus on one particular character all the time. It's coming to Steam on the 20th, which is pretty convenient seeing as how I'll have a chance to buy all the games just as I'm learning about the series. This thread is all for the discussion of the OddWorld series. So, if you're interested, discuss to your heart's content!

You know what'd be great? An episodic Oddworld game. Classic 2D gameplay with real 3D graphics. Oh, and by Oddworld Inhabitants and Oddworld Inhabitants only.

I can't wait to finally play the second two games. I love the first two, but my utter hopelessness at platforming meant that I could never finish them, and I'd like to see at least ONE Oddworld through to the end.

I beat the second one, got bad ending. I almost beat the first one then steam decided to not work due to me being in a beta for the new steam when the new steam launched. So I had to uninstall steam, and it mean t I lost all my games and their saved data.

Ooooh wow. I loved the first 2 games. Ive completed them ridiculous amounts of times.

Ive been replaying the first one on my friend's PSP and its actually quite hard. I have no idea how I completed it when it was new and I was 10! i must have been a hardcore 10 year old gamer.

I never played the last 2 since I never owned an Xbox, but will definately look into getting this!

Abe's Oddysee and Exoddus were two of the greatest puzzle platformers ever made.

Munch Oddysee is on Steam now and its only £3.50!
  • edited December 2010
Due to steam sale, pack is $12.49 (half off)!

I hope they will add achievements for the first 2 games. I am not interested in the rest.

Bought; how can one refuse such an incredible Steam offer? I look forward to playing them (for the first time). Does it really matter whether or not I play them in order? Because I'm really tempted to play 'Stranger's Wrath' first.

Strangers Wrath doesnt have the same story as the first 3 games and Munch has a retelling on the first 2 at the start.

    And bought.

I now own three copies of Abe's Oddysee and two copies of Exoddus. :p Now I shall start with Stranger, followed by Munch. Today shall be a fun day indeed.

EDIT: Or maybe not. The Steam forums are blowing up right now about the ports being nigh unplayable. I'm hoping it's a "vocal minority" issue, and/or that a patch will be released post-haste. Sigh.

EDIT EDIT: Sure enough, Stranger's Wrath doesn't even start. It just loads up the launcher. I press "play", and the launcher closes and immediately loads again. Can't even bypass it in the .cfg.

EDIT 3: Apparently it's a Steam issue, as one of the files keeps failing validation. Oy.

EDIT 4: THE GRITTY REBOOT: Finally validated correctly... but the issue hasn't been fixed.

Ah, okay. So that means I'm good to start with 'Stranger's Wrath'. Cool! Thanks :).

I get the feeling I'm going to really like this series.

I'm having problems too. After the loading screen of 'Stranger's Wrath', I just get a black screen. I can hear the sound effects when I press enter or perform other commands in [what I think is] the main menu.

How long has the Oddboxx been in development now?

I hate to say it, but this port is inexcusable. There is no way that they didn't come across these issues in testing.

Going to download Munch now. Maybe that one will at least *start*.

Iv just finished instaling it and I got that to and the controls on Munch are stiff as hell!

I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one. Hopefully we'll get a patch sooner or later. But why should we need to wait for a patch? Why can't developers just get the damn thing right the first time around? Stuff like this is becoming all too common in gaming today.

I've been waiting to play 'Stranger's Wrath' for quite some time, but the port is AWFUL. It manages to lag on a high profile system even on medium resolution, the camera controls are unbearable (plus it's impossible to set mouse sensitivity so it would be ok to control in both 3rd and 1st person modes), and not to mention the black screen (I got it after I've got back to town in the game) and the inability to change key bindings.

And don't dare anyone say 'But you've got to play such games with a gamepad!' :p No, I don't got to. It's on PC, it should be normally ported to keyboard controls. Besides, I just can't use GamePads. Something more keyboardish, like on Nintendo DS which I own, is allright and fine to use, but when it comes to two sticks and two pads, it's just too uncomfortable and I suck at controlling them.

This is really disappointing, considering it's not a quick cash-in port that could've been released in 2005, it's something that has been announced in 2009 if I'm not mistaken. There was a lot of time and no one really hurried anybody.

I finally got Stranger's Wrath working (with lag issues, but playable), just to have it crash so hard that it shut down my computer when I tried to access the ammo loadout. Munch also runs, but crashes every two minutes or so and crashes consistently every time I leave the opening cave.

If I didn't love Oddworld so much, and if I didn't still hold out hope for a massive patch that fixes all of this shit, I'd be storming Steam's doors for the elusive refund. Saints Row 2 is no longer the worst port job of all time.

I usually never buy a PC game blindly, just in case of this very thing. But I did it this time out of sheer excitement, and damn, did I get burned.

Aw man, I am seriously bummed over this news on these games. I have wanted Munch's Odyssey to be on PC for years, as it's one of my favorite XBOX games. I really hope some of these issues get sorted out because I really want to shell out the money for these games.

Just played, you guessed it- Stranger's Wrath.
And like you said, truly awful port.
I managed to adapt to the horrible controls, only to have it crash on a cutscene.
And from what I've read, Munch isn't much better.

Sigh, I at least hope the Abe combo runs adequate.

They do. As I gather they're practically the same games that were released on Windows all those years ago along with the PS versions, though fully Windows 7 compatible at least (never crashed down on me or anything)

Sounds like I made a good choice in waiting for the PS3 remaster of Strangers Wrath then!

The reason it's lagging is because you're getting too much FPS. If you have something run in the background you wont lag. It's what I do to play most games.

A patch for Munch hit today, seems to work fine now. Stranger's Wrath is still a bit broken, though.

I took all my rage out on the mudakans when playing Munch.

Far out, that was quick! I expected it to take much longer than that. At least this is some sort of redemption for the initial disaster. Hopefully this means that a 'Stranger's Wrath' patch isn't far off.

I always wanted to play one of the latter Oddworld's, especially Stranger. I guess I'll have to wait (likely past the sale) for the devs to put out patches to make these games not-busted.
