Everyone Needs To Play the Magicka Demo RIGHT NOW

edited February 2011 in General Chat
Guys.

Drop what you're doing.

Play this.

Play the demo. Get access to elements. Dick around when combining elements.

This game is amazingly fun and innovative.

The basic premise is that you are a wizard, and the spell system allows you to combine elements. You cast fire, you get a fire spray. You cast rock, you send out a boulder projectile. Combine fire and rock, and you send out a fireball.

You can cast spells on yourself, outwardly, or as an Area of Effect. You can also imbue your weapon with a magical effect and attack short-range that way. The game has up to four-player co-op, leading to frantic casting matches. It can also be played solo, the game scaled to the number of players. The spellcasting system is insanely fun and leads to a great number of ways to play. I really think everyone should try this out because the production values and execution are simply amazing on the part of this first-time developer, and this could easily be an indie game of the year contender this early on. TRY IT.

    So... it's like Kirby 64?

Played it and the walk controls are annoying.Blasts take to long to charge and beams are to slow to fight multiple enemys.

    I hate you.

Well I am currently broke when it comes to gaming money but I will check out the demo.

Quoted for truth. But I wouldn't mind playing Kirby 64 on my lappy without the use of a risky emulator.

    Thanks for the suggestion Dashing.

I am waiting a little until they settle in a stable version. Fifth patch should be out by Monday.

Thanks! Inform me again if a non-steam version of the demo is released. ;)
  • edited January 2011
Oh, btw, if you buy it before January 31st on Steam, you get some DLC for free (nothing spectacular, an additional skin that comes with a hat, sword+1 & staff+1), and an extra spell (meteor shower) from the beginning.

It's a Steamworks game, so that's probably not going to happen.

I bought it off of Direct2Drive (used a 20%-off coupon code they tweeted) and that gave me activation codes for Steam. Which is nice for me, I like Steam.

Eduardo, you can get the bonus content by buying it from D2D as well.

Will I like this if I don't like world of warcraft?
  • edited January 2011
This is nothing like World of Warcraft.

The demo is free. Play that.
  • edited January 2011
I never even played the demo, I just bought the game.

    It's kickin' rad.

Well, I officially give up on being able to finish Chapter 3 in single player. It's just too easy to get mobbed by enemies with no way to get free.

This game is not balanced for single player at all. Hopefully I'll be able to get a game going with friends.

What do you mean? Do you mean being surrounded, in which case an Area of Effect is best, or do you mean being picked up by enemies, in which case casting a damaging spell on yourself can set you free extremely easily?

I mean surrounded by enemies who hit you over and over with no time to recover. I have no time to cast area of effect spells before getting knocked off my feet again (and these enemies are immune to push as well).

How about using shields? Combined with certain elements, you get mines. Combined with others, you get something that can change their state(water shield makes them wet and capable of being shocked with lightning). Have you tried using main spell Magicks, like Haste? Or using a domed shield to lock out some enemies while allowing you to concentrate on a few? How about a personal shield? Crowd control using outwardly-cast shields? Remember: Lightning chains. Do you know the enemy's elemental weakness? Have you tried using that against them? How do the mobs move? Who should be your main focused target? If you're swarmed, what is your fastest attack? What about the outward push that you cast when not equipped with a spell?

Tried using shield, enemies walk past it. Dome shield just delays the inevitable, or makes it worse by trapping me with a guy who repeatedly knocks me off my feet until the shield breaks and the rest come pouring in. Haste is out because druids come in casting rain, and that puts chain lightning out as well. Mines work, but only for as long as I can keep retreating without getting cornered. However the druid keeps healing the big jumping/charging brutes so I can't wear them down slowly with mines. As I said before, these enemies are immune to being pushed by spells.

Maybe you can pull it off, I'm not that good, and I don't want the frustration of getting better. I have enough frustration in my life outside of gaming. I play games to escape, not to find a new challenge.

Shift + Shield = Area Shield

Okay, I got a chance to play with friends today, and that is awesome. The game is obviously made for multiplayer. The chaos works so much better in multi-player, it's an asset there, rather than a looming defeat in single player.

It also seems to be a lot buggier in multiplayer, but I'll put up with that for the tremendous increase in fun factor.

I gave it a try and really liked it. Except I died and hadn't thought to save so I just stopped because I was tired.
  • edited February 2011
Pity it won't let you save anywhere you want. But pretty fun, even if I'm too slow to take a strategy that doesn't involve a lot of shields.

I think this game would have been better if it took a few lessons from Left 4 Dead. Open up all the chapters from the start, let people choose which to play at any time, instead of having to load a campaign file saved a specific point. Have drop-in / drop-out multiplayer.

Dynamic paths/maps would be pretty awesome for a Magicka 2, though I realize the difficulty even Valve had in implementing those, so I won't knock the game for not having them.

Can you please stop spamming my threads. People have replied effectively, you're worthless posts aren't wanted here. In fact please ignore me, because I don't think it's desirable to speak to you and in time you won't want to speak to me...

You're a very bland, flowery poster, in my personal opinion, you bore the doodo out of me, so please leave me alone...directly and indirectly I want nothing to do with you.

This is an excellent game to be sure, I really like the casting system and it's really fun and innovative. It gets really good when you get to cast more advanced spells, you can kill yourself in some pretty amusing ways.

Im going to quote the guy from the video above.

"Hmmm I wonder if I cast fire on myself like I did with heal, can I burn myself, OH MY GOSH YOU CAN!"

He also later on kills himself trying to cast heal.
