Free Rice & the Freelance Rice Police
Heard of Free Rice?
It's an educational gaming site devoted to two things- making us a bit smarter, and feeding people in poor or natural-disaster struck areas. Practice a foreign language (French, Spanish, Italian, German, and English), chemistry, geography, art history, or math, and for every question you get right, 10 grains of rice are donated! They're currently sending rice to Haiti and Sri Lanka.
Anyway, they make rice acquisition a contest. Groups compete to get on the leader-boards, and there's also the feeling of knowing that your trivia prowess is actually used for something good! I set up a Telltale Community group, the Freelance Rice Police, for anyone who wants to help fight the crime that is malnourishment!
Oh, yeah... and since I forgot to mention it- Free Rice is free to play. The advertisers and donors pay for it. You on't pay anything other than your time!

How do they get money off us to afford to pay for the rice?
I'll sign up when I get home, if I remember
The advertisers pay. It's free to play, though.
Heck I made sure my local school board new about this and they started advertising it all over the school.
I never did sign up though, I just logged on as a guest, now that there is a telltale group though...
EDIT:and FYI when you start answering the questions, be sure to put that you are answering for the group, or it doesnt count toward us, it will count towards you, and it would still donated and all, but for the group, do that.
Also so far everyone has a Max avatar, lets see if we can keep it like that.
It relies on advertising as divisionten said. games + free rice = winners
As Jedexodus said, the only way they earn the money is through advertisements, and no one wants to advertise a website that no one goes to, even if it is for charity, so they add the questions, and make it sortof like a game, then people play it, the word spreads, then the advertisors realize how popular the website is, and pays them to put the advertisements there, then they have the money for the rice.
I'm curious about this. I just signed in, and I already donated 2000 grains. How does this work, exactly?
Thank you for reminding me of the game, too. I am much better at it than last time I played (Which was long ago.) Also, since when do the five other categories exist? I remember only vocabulary.
Read Jed and Gman's thing.
I checked his profile, and it says HE earned thee 2000, so I dont know.
Could just be an error, of course an error that earns some hatian family 2000 grains of rice so I wouldnt complain.
Goodie.
More rice for all.
EDIT:Hey is there a way where we can see what ranking we are on the leaderboard?
Well it does say Haiti at the moment.
Isnt there an email notification or something, maybe that gives you some thing.
Oh and a little story about this, 2 of my friends who knew about the questions, but had no clue that actual rice gets donated, had a contest on how much they could get, when the race ended, over 5,000 grains of rice per person had been donated, then I told them that actual rice gets donated and they were shocked.
Best question on Nation Capitals:
Kuwait City is the capital of...?
My favourite is easily Ouagadougou. I have no idea how to say it, but it's fun trying!
A.No one signed up for this
B.Only 40 grains of rice has ever been donated
C.Im not part of it.
What happened?
For the first time in my life I'm directing my overbearing sense of competition to something good.
