Free Rice & the Freelance Rice Police

edited February 2011 in General Chat
Heard of Free Rice?

It's an educational gaming site devoted to two things- making us a bit smarter, and feeding people in poor or natural-disaster struck areas. Practice a foreign language (French, Spanish, Italian, German, and English), chemistry, geography, art history, or math, and for every question you get right, 10 grains of rice are donated! They're currently sending rice to Haiti and Sri Lanka.

Anyway, they make rice acquisition a contest. Groups compete to get on the leader-boards, and there's also the feeling of knowing that your trivia prowess is actually used for something good! I set up a Telltale Community group, the Freelance Rice Police, for anyone who wants to help fight the crime that is malnourishment!

Oh, yeah... and since I forgot to mention it- Free Rice is free to play. The advertisers and donors pay for it. You on't pay anything other than your time!

This sounds great! Ill sign up when I get home from work.
How do they get money off us to afford to pay for the rice?

The advertisers pay. It's free to play, though.

    I actually love free rice.
Heck I made sure my local school board new about this and they started advertising it all over the school.
I never did sign up though, I just logged on as a guest, now that there is a telltale group though...
EDIT:and FYI when you start answering the questions, be sure to put that you are answering for the group, or it doesnt count toward us, it will count towards you, and it would still donated and all, but for the group, do that.

Also so far everyone has a Max avatar, lets see if we can keep it like that.

This is stupid. If they have the ability yo give free rice out they should do it immediately not wait for people to answer questions

It relies on advertising as divisionten said. games + free rice = winners

As Jedexodus said, the only way they earn the money is through advertisements, and no one wants to advertise a website that no one goes to, even if it is for charity, so they add the questions, and make it sortof like a game, then people play it, the word spreads, then the advertisors realize how popular the website is, and pays them to put the advertisements there, then they have the money for the rice.

    Just Signed Up.

I'm curious about this. I just signed in, and I already donated 2000 grains. How does this work, exactly?
  • edited February 2011
Joined the Freelance Rice Police! (It would be great if you can add a ™ to the name :))
Thank you for reminding me of the game, too. I am much better at it than last time I played (Which was long ago.) Also, since when do the five other categories exist? I remember only vocabulary.

    Goodie.
    More rice for all.
EDIT:Hey is there a way where we can see what ranking we are on the leaderboard?

I too am now a member. It's quite an interesting idea.

What would make this even better is somehow (though probably impossible) is finding out where your specific grains of rice are going, and other interesting facts. It would give me that bit more incentive to keep playing.

Well it does say Haiti at the moment.
Isnt there an email notification or something, maybe that gives you some thing.

Oh and a little story about this, 2 of my friends who knew about the questions, but had no clue that actual rice gets donated, had a contest on how much they could get, when the race ended, over 5,000 grains of rice per person had been donated, then I told them that actual rice gets donated and they were shocked.

My favourite is easily Ouagadougou. I have no idea how to say it, but it's fun trying!

I saw the same thing, looks like the group's been deleted or something.
  • edited February 2011
Weird, wonder why? Also, all my personal rice totals got deleted- I don't think the group got deleted so much as they had an internal server malfunction or something. I'll figure it out an redo the group if I have to.

Same problem here, so I'll work on it again tonight.
  • edited February 2011
Yay! Iced do good...he donated a 230 grains of rice and used math...I'm actually proud of myself for that.
  • edited February 2011
    *goes onto "math"*
For the first time in my life I'm directing my overbearing sense of competition to something good.
  • edited February 2011
God, I think this is fantastic. Just registered.
  • edited February 2011
The group appears to have exploded, and now theres no members showing up on the list and the rice count is zero! I hope that rice got out alive!
