Imaginarium

edited March 2011 in General Chat
Well, I know that there are at least a few Nightwish fans on this forum, so I thought I'd post a thread where we can discuss their upcoming album - 'Imaginarium', which I am unhealthily excited for.

Imaginarium_teaser.jpg

Now, this album will be a concept album which will be based around the story of an old songwriter who has a very vivid imagination and believes himself to still be a young boy. The album will have 13 tracks, will once again feature the London Philharmonic Orchestra. And as though this wasn't enough already, this album is going to be followed up will a feature-length film of the same name! Tuomas sure is one ambitious guy :D. But hey, I have faith in him, the band and the project.

I really can't wait to hear this album, especially after all of the great things I've been hearing about it. It's going to be heavier than its predecessor, it's sound is influenced by the likes of Hans Zimmer, Danny Elfman, Ennio Morricone, Christy Moore, Van Halen and Pantera. Tuomas has said that listening to this album will be like entering a Burton-Gaiman-Dali-themed amusement park. Pip Williams described the music as "beautiful, twisted, tribal and cinematic stuff". Also, for all of you that may be doubting Anette, Tuomas stated that "she did a bloody good job".

After hearing things like this, I can't help but have insanely high expectations for this album. I could go on about my excitement, and start listing more info and album trivia, but I'll shut up and allow all who are interested to do their own further reading and research:

    :D

We need to start a metal thread here, because I only had one that's fairly large and small threads like these keep popping up.

Hehe, I think you're right, doodo :). I made the "Favourite Metal Sub-Genres" thread as well, which went for a short while too, but we need one dedicated to simply metal music.

But, even if we did have a metal thread, I probably still would've posted this; I think it's a big enough project to deserve its own thread.

I have disowned nightwish due not having Tarja, and they way they sound kind of pop-rockish now.

I was never a huge fan but I am definitely going to check out the new album.

But this album is going to be heavier and darker-themed that 'Dark Passion Play', so it should cause the pop elements to subside somewhat.

But, with this being said, I actually loved 'Dark Passion Play' - I thought it was a wonderful album. It had the heavy stuff like "Master Passion Greed", the epic stuff like "Poet and the Pendulum" and "7 Days to the Wolves", as well as a number of other truly great songs. And, to me, it still feels like a Nightwish album. For sure, it lacks the operatic vocals of Tarja, but I feel that Anette is still a great vocalist, and perhaps the best non-operatic singer that Nightwish could have hoped for.

I just realized I saw these guys live in Austin. Small venue, about the size of a bedroom. Good times.

Far out, they wouldn't be playing in venues like that anymore. How long ago was this?

Wow, okay, maybe my original statement was wrong, then.

    Was this the venue?

Looms right but it's beeen a while. I believe Sonata Arctica opened up for them.

Sonata Arctica are one of those bands I've heard of a lot (mostly from these forums; I think it's VeronicanPlay that always mentions them), but have never bothered to actually listen to. The same thing with Epica. I should probably check out both seeing as how I'm beginning to get into symphonic/power metal.

Just out of interest, what was the Nightwish show like? It's hard to tell whether things actually sound good judging from amateur recordings.

The crowd was older. The band itself rocked hard. Lot of energy. Was hard for me to get into it as much as I wanted because the older crowd was a bit too mellow. BUT. Still good. Sonata Arctica was needlessly flamboyant and dramatic and humorous about it.. perfect intro band. Nightwish just had tons of energy. The particular venue... so small that it felt like the sound was everywhere. Had a real 'live' feel, very good.

Great to hear - I've worried that Nightwish's live performances could possibly be a little underwhelming due to the fact that they have to have the orchestral sounds as a backing track (as opposed to lugging an entire live orchestra around with them from show to show). But obviously not :).

Ohh Hayden, you know me so well. :)

And yes both bands are worth a listen to, for Sonata Aarctica try out Don't Say A Word first, that was the song that made me a fan, or try out No Dream Can Heal A Broken Heart, from their newer album.
And for Epica Quietus is a good song to start with or Sensorium.

You know I didn't think about it (wasn't a big fan at the time I saw them) but, in retrospect, I never heard anything that fell like a lull. The girl was really entertaining between songs, really interacted with the fans, the musicians were really into it, and the interweaved with their backtracks pretty seamlessly.

Cool, thanks for the recommendations! I'll check those out tonight.

That's what I like about Anette, she just seems to be a great person as well as a great vocalist. Tarja (the original vocalist) never really interacted with the crowd much (from what I've seen). She actually seemed to be a little pompous, and appeared to think that the crowd were there simply for her benefit.
the musicians were really into it, and the interweaved with their backtracks pretty seamlessly.

I think I heard somewhere that the band members each have metronomes playing in their ears (which is understandable). So, if there's any truth to this, this would probably be the reason why they were in perfect sync with the backing track.

Yeah. The thing I'll always take with me about both bands is how friendly they were.

I am not really good at recommending things, but those are songs that I like.
And I think I read somewhere that is what a recommendation is. :D
But I hope you will like those few I pointed out.

Well, you succeeded on this occasion. Those songs are great, and have definitely sparked my interest in both bands. I'll explore each of them further, and see if I can decide on which albums to purchase first :).

Also, on the topic of 'Imaginarium', I hear that it will include a track that will be around 20 minutes in length. I sense both pretentiousness and awesomeness :D!

Incidentally I have every album by Sonata Arctica now :P

    Apologies for resurrection.

I now own Epica's 'Design Your Universe' and have listened to it about 4 times through. What can I say? It just sounds great. "Kingdom of Heaven" is easily the best track. That song is just mindblowingly excellent; there are so many memorable moments throughout the track, and the instrumentation towards the middle is quite incredible. I think I can say that I like this band almost as much as Nightwish; the only thing that separates them is Tuomas' terrific songwriting and Marco's vocals.

Oh, and on the topic of 'Imaginarium', it seems we'll be waiting until 2012 for its release :( (the album coming early in the year, with the film to follow shortly after). Oh well, I guess this extra wait will pay off in the long run.

The title of the album seems to be becoming less and less original by the day.
