"help nathan buy firefly"

edited March 2011 in General Chat
Has anyone heard about this? Nathan Fillion star of firefly and castle recently stated in an interview that if he were to win $300 million in the lottery he'd buy the rights to firefly and distribute it online.

since then fans have started a group called "help nathan buy firefly" they've already raised almost $800,000 in pledges (there is no money changing hands as of yet) and they also have 110,000 fans on their facebook page which has existed for less then 2 weeks http://www.facebook.com/#!/HelpNathanBuyFF?sk=wall

The main idea is that the group want's to prove, via pledges, that there is a legitimate market for the show, and hopefully fox will either start the series again, or sell the rights to a different network so that we can get more firefly... I don't know if it will work, but it's just really cool to watch what's happening ^_^

Its pretty hopeless considering a good chunk of the cast are now on different successful shows.

I would love to see them make at least another movie though.

Hell, even if it's just an animated show now, or better, A VIDEOGAME SERIES, this really deserves it.

Believe me, I'd love for it to happen, but I'd love a new season of Babylon 5 just as much.

I really need to watch this show. I have heard nothing but good things about it but I never got around to watching it.

Nathan has said in further interviews (such as this podcast) that although attempting to raise the money is a nice gesture, there's a lot more worthy causes it could be going to.

His comment was offhand, and he did say it was if he won the lottery - people raising money and making their own donations doesn't seem to be a good use for the money.

And he is so_right. The firefly fans have devoted enough time and money into the idea that the series might continue. They bought so many DVDs that they have to bury some in their yards, they heavily supported a movie which was mediocre at best, they have bought a massively overpriced Blu Ray version of the series which has the exact same image quality as the DVDs, they have bought books with incredibly boring essays on the series and comics which tried to brutally press TV episode ideas into this new format, resulting in rather bad representatives of the sequential art form.

The Firefly fans are milked enough as of now.
The franchise must literally be considered undead, drained of its life but walking still!

Now this massively stupid idea comes up - just an idea, mind you - and the fans pledge 800.000 $. For what, seriously, for what?? As much as I love Firefly (and the series was incredible to say the least), if that is what comes from continued fan support, then please let it die. Stop flying. Stop the signal. Take the sky from these people. Now.

Umm isn't Nathon Fillon kinda tied up in Castle? (a great show btw). He does full length seasons and I would imagine that he wouldn't have a lot of time to do another series.

Castle is awesome. Managed to set itself apart from all the other crime shows.....because of Nathan Fillion lol.
I wasn't familiar with Nathan before only that I heard Uncharted fans say that he should play Nathan Drake.
I started watching Castle because it was time for a new crime show and thought it was okay at first. But gradually you get so attached to the awesome cast of characters and it becomes apparent what a cool guy that Nathan is. He is a really convincing actor and has an unique charisma.

Let Firefly die. Just let it die a great show.

No I rather give money to something worth it like cures for cancer.

The over paid actors can get there own money,

And those people who gave 800,000 or whatever so a dude can buy a tv show are losers.

You clearly have not watched Firefly.

LOL.... it is no different than pre-ordering for a game.... like lets say... a TTG game.

Its not like ONE person pledged that entire amount......

first of all, it's been stated a million times that no money will ever change hands, the groups called "help nathan buy firefly" because of the comment he made, the idea is to prove to fox that the fans are serious enough for fox to bring back firefly.

second, right now the average pledge is around $80, what most people are doing is pledging the amount of money that goes to entertainment monthly (movies, games, etc.) If it would ever get to the point where they actually do decide to call in the pledges and actually buy firefly, the people will simply sacrifice their entertainment for 1 month... is it really fair to condemn their usage of their months entertainment budget by saying "they should give it to charity" especially since firefly is something that, if brought back, they can enjoy for years to come.

I'm curious what the long term plan was for the people trying to raise this money.

    Step One: Raise money.
Step Two: Give to Nathan Fillion to buy Firefly property rights.
Step Three: Raise more money to give to Nathan Fillion to pay for actually making another movie/show?

They tried to do the same for Star Trek. Fund new episodes.
