I'm just happy adventure games are alive at all. I don't think they'll ever be what they were in their heyday but as long as they are still being made I'll probably be buying them.

What do people think? It seems like the true "adventure" games from back in the day started to split out to other genres like the action-adventure (Tomb Raider) or the RPG field and I feel like straight adventure games sort of went dormant for a while.

It seems like these days these more straightforward "adventure" games with exploration and point/click interfaces are seeing a bit of resurgence. From their arrival on sites like Steam and GOG to multiple fan projects releasing games lately to new commercial products coming into play it certainly appears that they're gaining some popularity again.

This forum alone appears to be growing faster than any other Telltale forum ever has. And this is before there's even a single screenshot or shread of story to speculate on.

Actually there have been 44 releases last year, and about 40-50 in the line for this year, so go figure out. This has been going on for the last 5-6 years in similar numbers. It just has changed, the games mostly are developed by smaller studios publishers and usually are not really reviewed by the big magazines that extensively. Guess once the dinosaurs step out of a field the playground is opened to smaller animals who can make a decent living by doing it.
I guess the big wakeup point for the genre was The longest journey which has been now ten years since then there has been a constant output of good adventure games.

You cannot get million seller numbers by doing adventure games, but if you are not in the we want to get rich quick thinking I guess there is enough audience to put food on the table.
Btw. the magazines and big game sites are not really a good source of info for adventure games since the genre is mostly independend and small publishers by now, it is better to go for the dedicated adventure game sites for the information.

Also have in mind there are new platforms which lend themselves perfectly to the point and click interface, it is mainly the smartphones and tablets which especially the tablets are a very capable platform for such games.
