Why do some forums take their selves so seriously

edited April 2011 in General Chat
I got banned from a forum like 10 years ago. I made a new account, forgetting if it were the same forum, even...and I was banned again for a second account. :p

I wasn't even being bothersome this time around.

Forums are just a place to socialize, make friends, pass the time. I don't see why some people see it like it's a work place or something, or like it's a art museum, or a fancy place to eat dinner...or a Vegas Casino or something...

I understand a bann is a bann, but it was like 10 years ago, the site code didn't even remember me. :p Was it that big of a deal? I enjoy talking to people on occasion about Final Fantasy or this/ that...I wasn't causing trouble.

Tell me about it! Once, I posted one of my songs, as a mini-tribute, on a forum. People liked it and started replying to my thread with "Awesome" or "Thank you!".

A mod intervened and wrote: "If you have nothing more to add than <thank you> please stop spamming. Whoever writes another pointless reply will be banned for a month".

o.O Dude, chillax! ...and I spent about an year on that forum, but I don't post there. I just read what others post. It is very unfriendly and the mods are really obsessed.

For example, if you would've posted your thread on that forum, doodo, you would've instantly been banned for "spamming" and "not bringing anything new to the forum". :|

    Ultra stupid...

That's why I like the TTG forums. It's incredibly relaxing to read and write here. Also fun!

I think we're encouraging more long-term forum relations here. ;)

Gaming forums in other companies have these ups and downs because their releases are so much apart; in here, there's some episode or other almost each month, so the customer/poster influx is rather steady.

Being banned is a serious slap on one's fingers, and it really should only be done if there's no other possibility. But as quick as TTG's release schedule is, banning on an episode-to-episode basis puts banned posters back into the saddle pretty quickly. The community wants them back for the ride, so to speak.

On the topic of "Thank you" threads: Hah! Gratification is exactly the reason why one makes videos (or draws or photographs, for that matter)! It is indeed very stupid to reprimand people for paying their respect.

I think they're pretty sound out here. I do find that part about 'thank you' being a spam ridiculous though. Unless forums came with a 'like' button like on tumblr or something, then the need for saying 'thank you' will become obsolete....

but hopefully on in real life. XD

It's partly due to the post counter. In a lot of forums it's seen as almost a sign of how trustworthy you are. Theoretically, the higher the count, the longer you've been here and therefore the friendlier and wiser you are. Thus forums who want to keep that (flawed) system have to be anal about people posting unconstructive comments or having conversations off topic.

It's incredibly annoying. A forum I used to visit rather a lot had a similair policy. They also had a "one game, one thread" policy, which sucked. If there was a large release, you'd have ten or so different discussions going on in one thread, often on the same page! Double posting was also seen as the equivalent of spitting on someones shirt, which didn't help matters. And god help you if you pyramid quoted. It was also a nintendo forum (the largest UK specific one), and for some reason you couldn't post friend codes. Doing so would result in a warning. I suppose they figured that you would get cyber-raped for doing so (despite the fact both parties must register eachother!)

I've had a couple of threads either locked or flat out deleted on this very forum! Mind you, they were fairly stupid posts. Still, freedom of speech? Censorship all the way baby!

Actually, now that I think of it; is it any surprise that doodo! got banned somewhere? It happened here, after all.

I guess that freethinkers and those who are understated will always have to fight the oppression of those with power.

I'm pretty sure it doesn't apply here. Once you're above 200, you can be fairly sure that people know you in here. I've seldom seen so many people in one forum who are willing to make extensive, long posts for an argument instead of upping their post count with ridiculous one-liners. Post count means nothing. We've got so many people here with 3.000+ posts, it's mind-boggling... which means that the significance of the individual 1.000+-poster drops a lot. ;)

On the other hand, I catch myself looking at the join dates. I mean, seriously, October 2006... I WANT THAT JOIN DATE!!

Actually, I'm all for fairly stupid posts. It's the offensive or insulting posts and threads which might get the killer treatment. Generally, moderators try to keep the individual game forums a little more focused on the actual subject at hand while the General Chat is OK for far more of the fairly stupid stuff. At least that's my philosophy...

And isn't it interesting that he only complains being banned on another forum?

/edit: Just as I was writing about the join dates, I checked the join dates of the posters in this thread and noticed something very interesting. Man, you can smell where the fans come from. :D

Haha. There's a lot of Monkey Island joiners. Also, I have the highest kudos points on the forum, so that is probably why everyone respects me.

Hey, my TT account is actually from '08 when SBCG4AP came out for the Wii, but I didn't join the forums until I got ToMI in the MacHeist bundle two years ago. This particular forum seemed too large for me at the time, and now I see a lot of you guys as good friends. ^__^

Well, my last deleted thread occurred only a few days ago and was posted under 'General Chat'. I wouldn't say that it was offensive, just stupid fun. It concerned a riff on the 'baking a cake' song from Sooty, along with a collection of disgusting and funny cake photos. Stupid; absolutely. Offensive; nope. Offensively stupid; possibly.

I'm not accusing yourself of deleting my thread though, I guess it all depends upon the sensibilities of the individual moderator. All the same, I think I'll still regard all moderator's as a bunch of Nazi bastards. I just like putting people in groups... much like the Nazi's!

Statistically, I suppose I'm the outlier.

As is pretty much everyone. High post counts just mean that person is prone to talking far too much about random, probably pointless things. The only time post counts are likely to be an effective indicator is if the forums are extremely heavily moderated and censored, or on the likes of yahoo-answers.

Personally, I think it's pointlesss. A person with 100 posts can be just as productive and nice to talk to as someone with 4,000. Of course, there is usually a settling in period as people test the ground a bit, to get a feel of what the place is like (my first dozen or so posts in my first forum were text talk, and fanboyish, for example).

I honestly do not post on many boards... and if they were all about locking up threads for no real reason I would not be posting there very long... I personally like when threads go a little off topic.. that is how conversations are.
  • edited April 2011
I think a little bit offtopic is fine, but it could be annoying if people are trying to have a serious discussion about something. Which is why a good mod moves posts into seperate threads rather than deletes them for that purpose. Could anyone imagine how much darker the world would have been if "Boobs: An artistic discussion" had not been allowed to take place? :p

I quit the Minecraft forums because the moderators all began acting like idiots. The userbase just soldiified my decision to leave.

Fun fact, I didn't even get a single warning or a bad word of the modders while I was there. I just left due to the douchebaggery. Idiots.

    Yeah same here.
    Funny thing on Monkey Island.
I always heard about people here saying "take on Monkey Island" and really didnt care what telltale did since this was the first Ive heard of it, and then E3 hit and I went to telltale, and immediatly saw Monkey Island on the top of the page, and just knew that there would be a jump in members if it did be as popular as they did.

Haha, I look at my join date and am both shocked and a bit disturbed.

I'm pure Monkey Island hop-along. But I owned a retail copy of S&M Season one for a long time, so do one.

Also i've never had a post deleted ever. It's evident that the mods are all fear me

I've had a thread deleted while I was in the middle of posting to it for the first time, once. Talk about being preemptive!

A lot depends on the forum. If all you do is post "I agree", that's pretty much frowned on everywhere. Some places are supposed to be more serious, participants have more limited time available, and you really shouldn't post there unless you have something really significant to contribute. Fortunately, this is not one of those places.

Personally, I think double-posting should be OK, and post counts removed, so no one accuses people of double-posting just to boost post counts. Single-subject posts are a lot easier to handle. They can even be more easily removed by power-mad moderators. :)
