Could never choose 10. But Flickchart says my favorite movie is Ocean's Eleven (2001), and I wouldn't argue with that.
  • edited November 2011
Yeah, I don't feel that I could ever choose ten movies or put them in any sort of order. There's just too many and I would always feel like I was forgetting one or leaving one off the list.

You know this has always been an inner turmoil for me.

I can never seem to really decide whether this movie, or Muppet's treasure island is the best muppet movie.

It's Muppet Christmas Carol and you know it.

I too cannot possibly pick 10 films and place them in any sort of order, but I can give you a few of my favourite films. No order, just a nice list.

    - The Empire Strikes Back
    - Who Framed Roger Rabbit?
    - Wrongfully Accused
    - License to Kill (the Bond film)
    - Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Movie
    - Basil, The Great Mouse Detective
    - The Emperor's New Groove
    - The A-Team

My top ten is constantly revolving depending on my mood..

    10. The Thing 80's
    9. Super 8
    8. Saving Private Ryan
    7. Duel
    6. War of the Worlds
    5. The Dark Knight
    4. Inception
    3. Gojira
    2. Jaws
    1. Jurassic Park

This is really a rough list. I would need a bit more time to come up with a more correct one. But these are the top ten films that came to mind (one being my favorite of course) when thinking about the movies i've watched recently.

    That's very understandable.

I might be able to come up with a top fifty. Maybe. It would probably make me lose what little credibility I have here if I mentioned all the movies I like, since some of them I like for really stupid reasons. Like Weekend at Burnie's and Weekend at Burnie's 2, films that I referred to for months as the "dancing dead guy movies."

You made me double check to make absolutely certain that "Weekend at Bernie's" was not actually spelled that way.

Yeah, I figured that after I made the post, but I prefer to be a grammar Nazi and correct the title. Still like the movie. It started out with me seeing the second half of the second one when it was on TV. I ended up laughing much too hard for someone who barely knew what was going on. It took me forever to find out what the movie was but when I did, I made sure to see the rest. It's my B-movie comedy of choice now.

    constant favourites:
Aliens, Die Hard, Jurassic Park, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, JAWS, Star Wars...nothing really surprising.

My favorite movies seem to change as time passes, but I feel that these will probably stick around the most.

    In no particular order:
    • Star Trek XI (reboot)
    • Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home
    • Return of the Jedi (original)
    • Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl
    • Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2 / Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (when considering the HP franchise)
    • Batman Begins / Batman (1989) - (tie. I can't decide which I like better)
    • Lord of the Rings - 6 part fanedit by Kerr (I consider LOTR as one long movie)
    • The Princess Bride
    • Sneakers
    • Stargate
Honorable Mentions go to BTTF3 and Jurassic Park 1

I'm not sure I can choose just ten, or even remember all of the movies that I really like, so I'll just put down the movies that I can remember at the moment that would be at the top of my list. In no particular order.

    Lawrence of Arabia
Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl
Lord of the Rings (all parts)
    Teahouse of the August Moon
    The Sea Hawk
    Animal Crackers
Star Wars V: Empire Strikes Back
    Indiana Jones: Temple of Doom
    Jurassic Park
    Megamind
    Finding Nemo
    V for Vendetta
    Aladdin

And I'm sure there are a good deal more that should be up here. However, I have confined myself to movies that I have watched multiple times and continued to love (with the exception of Lawrence of Arabia because it was just that fantastic). Even as I write this, I see how many movies I've forgotten that I absolutely love.

In short, it's impossible to write a top ten list. I've even failed at writing a top thirteen list since I forgot a lot of movies that I either watched recently or as a child and loved. I guess this is just a rough approximation of my tastes.

In no particular order (with the exception of the first trilogy listed, those are my favourite movies):

    1) The original Star Wars trilogy, Empire being my favourite.
    2) Serenity
    3) Revenge of the Sith
    4) The Back to the Future trilogy
    5) Superman (1978)
    6) The LotR trilogy
    7) Sunshine
    8) Star Trek Generations
    9) Ghostbusters
    10) Howl's Moving Castle

I realize a trilogy consists of more than one movie, however I generally watch trilogies marathon style like one giant, fantastic movie.

No order for this list. There probably is an order somewhere but I'm too lazy to decide right now.

    1) V for Vendetta
    2) Across the Universe
    3) Mary Poppins
    4) Spirited Away
    5) About a Boy
    6) Ratatouille
    7) Megamind
    8) Forrest Gump
    9) Seven Samurai
    10) Perfume - The Story of a Murderer

PS. Special mention goes to Iron Giant, Mean Girls, and Disney's Beauty and the Beast, I like them a lot and felt bad leaving them out. It was hard to decide. : ( (I got a separate list for animated movies, but that's another story)

It's just a matter of which you like more than the other. I made my top 10 through process of elimination.

    1. Cars 2
    2. Master Of Disguise
    3. Meet The Spartans
    4. From Justin To Kelly
    5. Gigli
    6. Gigli 2: The Giglening
    7. Cat in the Hat
    8. Daredevil
    9. The Marine
    10. Citizen Kane

My definite favorites. And you can't say that I have horrible taste in movies because I put Citizen Kane there, so I'm a film expert.

    Err...

    The Lion King
    The Fox and the Hound
    Moulin Rouge
    Butterfly Effect
    Star Trek XI
Star Wars Episode III (Don't hurt me!)
Dinotopia (although that initially broadcast as a mini-series on TV, but on DVD it was all condensed into one film.)
    Toy Story 3
    Johnny English
    War of the Worlds (remake)

    Three worst films:
    Butterfly Effect 2
    Butterfly Effect 3
    Eragon

Simply because the source material for each of those was so awesome, and the films so completely failed to live up to anywhere near what they accompolished. Instead being bad cash-ins. I despise Eragon(the film) as it ruined any chance of the whole saga getting the cinematic adaptations they deserve.

It will, but you'll have to wait 15 to 20 years for there to be a proper remake.

Grouping series together, as it would be uninteresting to see Toy Story 1-3 taking up almost a third of the list.

Subject to change at any time.
    1. Toy Story (series)
    2. The Lion King
    3. Monsters, Inc.
    4. The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh
    5. Tangled
    6. Aladdin
    7. A Bug's Life
    8. Back to the Future (series)
    9. Ghostbusters 1
    10. Up

Like many others, I don't feel that I can make a definitive top 10 list but here's 10 films which I adore...

1 - Alien: As impossible as it is to create a true top ten, I can say with great confidence that this is my favourite film of all time. The direction, sets, acting, music and the H.R. Giger designed creature are second to none in my opinion. I made this YouTube video, which goes in to detail as to why I love the film so much...

2 - The Big Lebowski: For myself (and countless others) this is the greatest comedy ever made. The sheer volume of quotable lines is staggering, the only film that comes close in terms of quote ratio is the sublime Withnail & I. When I first discovered The Big Lebowski, I watched it once a day for an entire week. It's that good!

3 - John Carpenter's The Thing: A superb adaptation of John W. Campbell's short story Who Goes There? Special mention has to go to the mind blowing special effects by Rob Bottin, which not only hold up to this day but are actually superior in their practical glory to the CGI garbage (*cough* The Thing prequel *cough*) we're fed in today's cinema...
    Dog kennel... classic!
    Spider head... classic!

Also, there's a few one liners that are absolute zinners...
"You've got to be fucking kidding"... classic!

"I know you gentlemen have been through a lot, but when you find the time, I'd rather not spend the rest of this winter TIED TO THIS FUCKING COUCH!"... classic!

    "Yeah, fuck you too"... classic!

4 - Magnolia: A film by Paul Thomas Anderson. Before you all judge me, that is not Paul W.S. Anderson (who directed such "classics" as Resident Evil and Alien Vs Predator). This is the talented director who made such (genuine) classics as Boogy Nights and There Will Be Blood.

Anyway, the film is about 24 hours in the life of several people, who's lives connect in unexpected ways. The story is inspired by the lyrics of Aimee Mann (who is a personal favourite musician of mine) and she also provides the soundtrack...

... *FUN FACT* Aimee Mann played the German lady whose toe is sacrificed in The Big Lebowski, which marks her second appearance in my top 10.

5 - Cloverfield: Okay, I know that this is a film which divides it's audience but I love it. It certainly helps to have knowledge of the events that occurred during the viral marketing campaign, as they add some much needed exposition and intrigue to the procedings. I love the way that the "monster" is actually a baby, who's lost and confused, searching for it's mother. An underrated gem as far as I'm concerned.

6 - George A. Romero's Day of the Dead: For the longest time I would have placed this film's predecessor Dawn of the Dead as my favoured Romero zombie flick. In fact when I first viewed Day of the Dead, I was left as cold as the flesh of a zombie by it but over time I've come to hold it in high esteem. It's a film which matures like a fine wine. Everyone (rightfully) quotes the line from Dawn of the Dead "when there's no more room in hell, the dead will walk the earth" but not enough praise is given to the chilling dialogue within Day of the Dead, regarding the zombie apocolypse...

You want to put some kind of explanation down here, before you leave? Here's one as good as any you're likely to find; we're being punished by the creator. He visited a curse on us, so we might get a look at what hell is like.

Maybe he didn't want to see us blow ourselves up and put a big hole in his sky. Maybe he just wanted to show us he was still the boss man. Maybe he figure we was getting to big for our britches, trying to figure his shit out.
It can be domesticated Sarah, don't you see? It can be conditioned to behave the way we want it to behave...

...then it can be fooled, don't you see? They can be tricked into being good little boys and girls, the same way we were tricked into it; on the promise of some reward to come

    ...that's pure poetry.

7 - Inglourious Basterds: As hard as it is to do, I'm purposefully selecting one film per director. This is especially tricky with Quentin Tarantino seeming as I'm a big fan of every single film he's made. However I believe that this (as Brad Pitt's character states at the end of the film) is his masterpiece. From the unbelievably tense first act, through to the exhilarating conclusion; this is a captivating work of genius. Special mention and extra kudos goes to Christoph Waltz as the villain Hans Landa, a truly spell-binding performance that's both terrifying and hilarious in equal messure. How Mr. Waltz went from this to The Three Muskateers, I'll never know!

8 - I Am Legend: Much like Cloverfield; I'm aware that this is a film that many people dislike and whilst I do concede that it has it's flaws (namely the naff CGI effects and that ending), it is a film that moves me to tears at least three times with every viewing. Quite frankly, I will always have the upmost respect for any form of art that is capable of affecting me so deeply and with such ease.

Also, who doesn't like Will Smith?! I mean, the guy's made some awful movies (I'm looking at you Independence Day and Shark Tale), but he's just so damn likeable. With I Am Legend, we get to see him deliver a deep, touching and nuanced performance.

9 - Goodfellows: The ganster genre of cinema is much like the Western genre to me; I'm really not a fan. However, as much as the occasional Western emerges that I fall in love with (hello Unforgiven, The Quick and the Dead and um, Back to the Future: Part III), on rare occasions I fall head over heels in love with a ganster flick. Goodfellows is one such film. A true epic, as we follow the rise and fall of a mobster through varying decades.

Joe Pesci's role certainly deserves the recognition it receives for being bloody scary. His character is the stuff of nightmares.

10 - Zodiac: I hope this doesn't come across as overly morbid or perverse but the inner workings of a real life serial killer fascinates me. How could they perform such acts? What drives them to start down that path? Who was the true identity of the uncaught murderer?

With these questions in mind it's little wonder that I'm fascinated by David Fincher's recreation of the events surrounding America's most prolific unsolved serial killer case; the Zodiac. The level of detail Fincher went to in order to portray events as closely as possible to the factual events is commendable, he even filmed the murder scenes at the exact real life locations.

A thought provoking true life story that prompted me to research the suspects following my viewing. Highly recommended, morbid or not!
    Friar wrote: »
    ...worst films:
    Butterfly Effect 2

Oh geez, good call. I really like the first Butterfly Effect (it's surely the only decent thing that Ashton Kutcher's ever done... at least without me wanting to bitch slap the little goblin), but the sequel was a complete waste of my money and time. It was less of an actual follow-up and more like a vastly inferior remake, with entirely unnecessary soft core porn elements. It's as though someone got a-hold of Seth Brundle's teleportation machine and shoved The Butterfly Effect in one pod and Debby Does Dallas in the other. Brundle-Fly himself was less of an abomination than that straight-to-DVD travesty!

    Who Framed Roger Rabbit?

    Iron Giant
    Ratatouille
    The Mask
    Coraline
    Nightmare Before Christmas
    Kung Fu Panda 2
    Monster House
    Osmosis Jones

Yeah, most of it are animated, but whatever. And I might change the list here and there.

These are my "desert island" movies. "Favorite" is too tricky a concept for me when it comes to movies. In approximate order:

    The Godfather
    Citizen Kane
    No Country For Old Men
    Ghostbusters
    The Godfather: Part II
    Back to the Future
    Rocky
    The Third Man
    Eraserhead
    Rabbits

The last one is a dicey selection because it's a series of webisodes, not really a film and not really a TV series. But since it's by David Lynch I'm going to count it as a film and put it here.

It's okay, but it's kind of built from what I consider a minimal knowledge of film. Then again, lately I've come to decide anyone who isn't Quentin Tarantino has a minimal knowledge of film.

Don't worry, George Lucas made a career of it. and I'm sorry I can't let it pass without saying something. Crystal Skull? Really? Okay.

Yeah. There's not that much I honestly hate about Crystal Skull. There are things I think don't work, but I don't really....care? I should also mention that this list is constantly changing.

I knew there was a reason I like you.

I'll be honest, I didn't mind it. I know there's a lot of people that HATE it. It's just not something I thought I'd see on a "top" list. I did like it more than Temple of Doom, but I've come to accept that some people love that movie and some hate it. I just havent read much love for Crystal Skull yet :P

I don't remember much about Crystal Skull beyond the refrigerator scene (which made me want to quote Richard Armour) and the army ant scene (which made me pull up my feet onto my seat at the theater). I should probably watch it again at some point. I do own it, after all.

As for Temple of Doom...it's pretty much my favorite Indy movie.

Heh. Temple of Doom is my favorite of the four but that comes from being a great lover of torrid, violent pulp novels with heroes who are men of fortune who deal out violent death to villains and fight cults in jungles and make barbaric sexual love to goddesses and such. And the colors in the film are some of the most gorgeous Spielberg has ever done.

Mine's Crusade. It was just extremely well done. All characters were reintroduced(new viewers wouldn't be lost), there was backstory(needless, true, but entertaining and didn't take away from the story), there were lots of action and comedy scenes, sometimes intermixed. It also answered a couple fan questions within it. I just really enjoy it.
