The Backloggery Thread

edited February 2013 in General Chat
So I see several people like myself have a huge library of unfinished games.

And I KNOW we talk about it all the time.

So why not have these kind of discussions in its own thread.

Therefore, The Backloggery Thread was born.

Here's my Backloggery:

http://backloggery.com/retrovortex

As of the 11/11/11 its already quite outdated, I have over 500 games to beat now.
(I need to go back and update it soon)

As you can see, since I started my backloggery in July, I have beaten just 2 games:

Megaman X
Mario's Picross

I also completed Cave Story in September, but its not on the backloggery.

So thats 3. 3 games.

This. Is. Going. To. Be. Impossible!!

I mean look at the games I have on there.

I have BOTH Ghouls 'n' Ghosts AND Super Ghouls 'n' Ghosts to beat.

And I can't even get past the first few levels of those! :X

But lets not get too defeatist. There is still time.

Anyone got any recommendations on what to play? I have difficulty deciding these days...

Play Monkey Island, of course! If ever in doubt, choose whichever has the most pirates.

This backloggery thingy seems quite interesting... now I must star my own.

Far far too much. It's borderline embarassing!

RetroVortex, I love your Backloggery because it makes me feel so much better about mine. :D

This should more or less be in order. There's a few number discrepancies from my personal Excel sheet, but I documented a few things a little differently, like compilations.

For me to have a backloggery.com page would be to ask me to regularly update it.

But I'm not going to do that. Certainly, I could make a concerted effort, but I know I would just forget and let it sit with the same status for ages.

    Same here.

Also, my backlog is huge, and it would take me days to add them all. Hell, it took me days to make the Excel spreadsheet with all the games I own, and that's not even halfway done.

I would say that my ~350 game list took me about three hours to copy from my Excel sheet to my Backloggery. And I was just killing time while waiting for my dad to have me help him with a chore (and at some point while I was busy losing track of time an doing data entry, he decided to blow off the chore).

As for my Excel list, that took me a bit longer, but over a longer period of time, and not because it was time consuming to make the list, but because it was time consuming to make it do what I wanted.

    gamelist.png

The list gives me a running total of how many entries I have for each system, and I have a formula that takes the answers to "Beaten", "In Progress", "Disqualified", "100%able", "100%ing", and "100%ed", and determines whether to display the "Finished" column as "Yes", "No", "In Progress", or "N/A", so completion of all my games are judged on the same criteria.

I've been using Backloggery for about a year and a half, and find it very helpful in keeping track and focusing on finishing my old games. In that time I've gotten from about fifty-fifty finished/unfinished to around two thirds done.

And in the name of shameless self-promoting, let me point out that I made a cool little browser script for Chrome, Firefox and Opera that adds some extra features to the Backloggery site.

Here's some of what I have. Not even all my console games.
Then take my steam account and assume most of them are backlogged.
    steamcommunity.com/id/elvenmonk
Then I've a lot of WiiWare, DSiWare, PS3 Games, Wii Games, 3DS games, DS games, PSN games, and such not listed. Not worth listing them all.

    Hah, created it!

Completely unrelated question: Started out my Fallout 2 character as a hand to hand/unarmed kind of guy. How screwed am I?

I changed my mind. I felt this might actually encourage me to finish some of the games I own that I've never even touched. The format of this list is still a bit of a work in progress (I think I need to make compilations of various PC games with expansions), but I think I have it all down for the most part.

I'm sticking with my Excel spreadsheet, it's just easier.

Also, of the over 600 games I have listed so far, I've completed around 150 of them. I have a lot of stuff to go through!

600 games? Wow. Talk about dedication to your hobby. (color me jealous, tbh)

Anyways, at least you have a spreadsheet to work off of. I didn't previously have anything for myself.

Also, I've updated my backloggery. It turns out that I was missing some Humble Bundle games that I had never downloaded or activated on Steam.

I really need to make one. However, every time I think about it, I realise that it'll mean going through the 200-300 retail games I own, jotting them down as I go along. It would take ages, and I could be completing a game on my backlog in the time taken.

What I would suggest is breaking up your time spent and do one console or PC download distributor at a time; and if you have a crap ton of Steam/GOG games, you might break them up by section.

Backloggery really is very fast to add/edit games. There are even a few fields that persist from one add form to the next when you're adding multiple games in a row ("Compilation" and "System" being two that I have encountered) so that you don't have to constantly change the "System" field to say "Steam" or have to change the Compilation field 7 times to say "Humble Indie Bundle #3."

I spent a few hours tonight making several much needed adjustments to my Excel sheet. And by adjustments, I mean I redid the thing on a new sheet. For the actual meat, the list itself, this mainly meant copying and pasting the old one into a new list that now has a separate sheet for each system.

On the back end of things however, this meant working out a new front sheet with far more statistical information...

    gamelist1.png

...creating a little "widget" to display said information on each system's sheet, for all 19 systems (22 sheets, as PC is split into Steam, GOG, Telltale, and Other)...

    gamelist2.png

...tweaking my main "finished" formula to add a new condition, "Not Owned", for borrowed games and future purchases...

    gamelist3.png

...and another addition I probably shouldn't discuss on here.

That last one was the hardest, because to gather that information, I normally just count the "finished status" column, but I don't want the data on these games to be included with the rest, so I had to re-adapt my original criteria formula to function inside of a counting formula. I nearly gave up before I figured it out.

This doesn't mean I'm not liking the Backloggery. I just enjoy having a list that I have more control over the data on, and where I can edit individual entries while still being able to see the whole list.

This seems like an awesome idea. :)

Made my account, going to add games when I get home from work.

    *Edit*
Now done adding my games, took a while but I am proud (don't know if this is actually something you can be proud of) to present, my backloggery.

It's no where near where it should be.

Can someone help out a noob, I know you can add friends and an Avatar but I can't for the life of me work out how to do any of those things.

Any help would be appreciated. :)

*Edit* Nevermind the first question, I worked it out in the end.
But I still need help with the avatar.
Anyone got any recommendations on what to play? I have difficulty deciding these days...
As you have just bought Divinity 2: Dragon Knight Saga I will recommend that, you are going to love that game. Trust me. :)

I would play that, but my hardrive is almost full now.

I guess its more Serious Sam 3 and Skyrim for me :D

All your games make up 100% of your games?!

Well, if that number ever reads anything other than 100%, then I know something in the sheet is broken.

I'm in the process of building my list but being the completionist I am regarding stuff like this I'm going to add every game I currently own, including ones completed ages ago. http://backloggery.com/corruptbiggins

I decided to give the indie bundles their own sheet, since I was keeping them separate anyway. Turns out that they make up 17% of my game collection.

I guess this means I like Zelda games:

EDIT: Oh, snap. I need to add Link's Awakening for Game Boy (completed) to my Backloggery.

EDIT AGAIN: I fixed format inconsistencies and typos in my Backloggery after looking at this screenshot.

Wow. I like the idea of the backloggery site, but this is going to take a while...

I've been meaning to create an account there for a while now, and finally did today: http://backloggery.com/flesk

It's nowhere near complete though, and I didn't realize Steam was an option before tagging my games as PC Downloads. I don't know what I'll do with my Humble Indie Bundle games though.

I always activate the Steam keys for HIB games I get, so I put Steam as the system (PC as the original system) for those, and PC as the system for those that don't have Steam keys.

That is to say, I don't use Desura so I don't use that label for any Indie Gala games.

EDIT (after next post): I do also put the name of the Bundle as the compilation. I think I started doing that after I noticed Guru did.

I put my Humble Bundle games with Steam as the platform and Humble Indie Bundle Whatever as the compilation.
  • edited April 2012
Guru, why is your "Now Playing" list on Backloggery so long?

Surely, you can't currently be playing 19 different games.
  • edited April 2012
Because I use it more as a "games I'm in the middle of" list than a "playing at this exact moment" list. It sort of gives me some incentive to get back to those games.
  • edited April 2012
Ah. Well, I'm technically in the middle of BIT.TRIP RUNNER, but I haven't played it in weeks.
  • edited April 2012
I have one more game to run through and then Assasins Creed is all caught up.

Thanks. That sounds like a good idea. I might use two entries for the few games I've played on several systems, like Osmos HD, which I've played both on linux and Android. As long as the bundle is listed, it will be easy enough to look them up if I want to find and install the games again.

Much like Guru, I use an Excel spreadsheet to keep track of all my games. And so far, I've counted the number of games I own as 1111. I've more than that, but I don't feel like updating the list, for some reason.

Anyone know how to get Excel to only count cells that are a certain colour? Be handy to have it automatically count how many I've finished rather than have to do it by hand.

I have a bit of an idea how to achieve something like that, but it's a little tricky without knowing how you have your sheet laid out, what statistics you're looking to get out of it, and whether or not any of the solutions I know will fit with your layout or if you'd be willing to change your layout to accommodate what I know how to do.

I could talk at length about my sheet and how I've accomplished something very similar to this, but unless you want to hear the whole thing, then ask me any specific questions you still have or about how to apply it to what you want, it might be more efficient for you to accept my friend request on Steam, then shoot me a PM if I'm not on (since I don't get on Steam regularly), then we can talk about it.

Or you could just post a screenshot of your sheet here and I can try to figure out something.

Oh, and my sheet hasn't been updated in a while for the same reason. :D

Eh, all I'm after is an basic 'X number of cells have a font colour of Y' count. Not after anything fancy. Also, it's not exactly essential. I know it won't be that big a number.

    Screenie, for those interested:
    GamesListExample.png
Purple Circle's the number of games beginning with each letter, and the Gold-ish Circle's the collected total of those.

And here's the code I've used to calculate the number of games in each column (the purple circle):
    =COUNTIF(A7:A150,"**")

I would totally create a spreadsheet for my miniscule backloggery, but Excel and I are not really on speaking terms because it keeps on hiding all the tools I need to make my data look nice. However, once I force it to reveal its secrets, then I may do this backlog thing.
