Most Replayable Game(s) You've Played

edited November 2011 in General Chat
Replayability - some games lack it completely, but there are others which just thrive in the area. Whilst we've all probably played dozens of titles which we have absolutely no inclination to return to after completion (or maybe even before completion), there are others which we find ourselves wanting to revisit regularly and repeatedly.

I'm just wondering what games, for you personally, fit this description. What games have you played which possess the greatest level of replayability?

Now, this doesn't necessarily mean the games with the greatest exploration, the games with the most freedom, or the games with the largest number of different routes to take and alternate decisions to make (though those can certainly be factors in creating enhanced replayability, for sure; I'm not discounting that), but it simply refers to games that hold elements which you just constantly find yourself wanting to re-experience.

So go ahead and share these titles with us, and also tell us the reasons why these games are so replayable for you.

Also, alternatively, feel free to share the titles of the games which you found to have the least amount of replayable value; that could also be interesting.

I'm currently trying to beat Arkham City for the third time.
The first time was for the plot, the second time to 100% the side missions, the third time is to just be Batman again. It never gets old putting down a 40 hit combo. Also, latching onto a helicopter, ripping out its internal guts to download a code to enter sealed off locations, then descending in a high speed blitz to smash into thugs.

All the Zelda games, Wind Waker especially. I love the high seas enchantment, the charming characters and art direction, and of course classic puzzles.

I agree about Zelda. I have replayed Ocarina of Time, Twilight Princess and Wind Waker multiple times each.

Also, I replay the Monkey Island and King's Quest games probably at least once every year and a half or so.

I play King's Quest I once a year to remind me of everything I didn't like about old adventure games :P

I find myself going back to the original Half-Life every so often, so I guess that'd be my pick. Despite its age and my knowing all the tricks to surviving, I find it's still one of the few games that never breaks the first-person viewpoint and is incredibly immersive as a result (ironically, that's one of the things Duke Nukem Forever did right - vehicle sections aside).

and I play King's Quest VI to remember what I loved about them.

Oh I do like King's Quest. Just the first one... not the remade versions or anything... seems so frustrating sometimes.

I consider all of the Sierra games to be the most replayable adventure games. Especially the most difficult ones, because you'll be replaying them a thousand times before you ever beat them.

I choose Age of Empires II, my go to game since it came out in 1999. It has a fantastic (and fairly historically accurate...most of the time) campaign, a great series of random map levels scaled so you can try out any of the civilizations versus a random assortment of other civilizations in a variety of difficulty levels, and a nice campaign editor so you can construct your own campaigns.

But what I really like is that there are so many different strategies that you can use fairly effectively in both the campaign and random map. Also, the fact that since this is a strategy game from the nineties...it actually has a fairly decent AI that can be pretty difficult to beat without careful planning, even on the standard setting. I just gave it a playthrough last year after years of playing other strategy games and getting pretty good at them and I still nearly got my ass handed to me in the Aztec campaign.

My other favorite game for re-playability is Diablo II, which has one of the most fun multiplayer co-ops that I've played. Maybe it's just because I also have Comrade Mortis, and more recently, Comrade Pants, playing along as well. But I love the amount of customizability in the game and the number of workable builds that you can create. It's just fun to tinker with a build until it's just perfect for completing a certain task...like creating an unstoppable army of the undead. And once you've achieved that...there's six other character classes to go try, each with their own unique abilities to tinker with.

hm...fairly recent ones? Both Arkham games, Force Unleashed, R&C:ToD.
older? Police Quest 3, SMB3, Super Metroid, Castlevania 4. I also remember playing No Mercy on the 64 for over a year off and on.

For me, it's the Pokemon games. And most games that can be finished from beginning to end in one day (like early Ratchet and Clank games).

It has to be Fallout. I just love playing in that world, and playing it in different ways. The amount of mods that are still available helps in that respect. Sometimes I like to cheat the hell out of the game and become some Über Vault Dweller, an unstoppable killing machine who just wants to wipe out all life on this scorched earth. Not that I'm trying to compensate for anything!

Dungeons and Dragons. Graphics might suck, and it might lag during multi-player, but it's got a lot of replayability.

That's just... win. So how do you soft reboot your party when they become unresponsive? Mine require a regular diet of Cheetos and Mountain Dew.

I never really had to soft reboot. It's usually just the player by the tavern getting drunk.

    A question of taste. ;)

Even if they're the greatest games ever, I don't find myself replaying those 70-to-100-hour RPGs these days. Somehow Mass Effect 2 with its 3rd person shooter elements has tickled my replay reflex, but that is indeed an exception. Exploration is not the greatest asset of the series - but too much, too open games just seem to be too much effort and time for me to invest in computer games. Hence shorter action-adventures have a far higher chance to end up on my PC again and again. Prince of Persia 2008 for example, but also Tomb Raider Anniversary, but most of all Beyond Good & Evil. Seasons 2 and 3 of Sam & Max and Tales of Monkey Island are Telltale's achievements which I normally revisit once a year.

Actually, Fallout 3 and New Vegas are very replayable for me. Also, I find Assassin's Creed games very refreshing at times.

Can't believe the thread has gotten this far with no mention of Star Fox 64.

    Yes. Yesyesyesyesyesyes.

This reminds me that I wanted to create an interesting Illithid build to add to my menagerie of monstrous characters.

The Monkey Island games, Full Throttle, the Mass Effect games (especially Mass Effect 2 - the first one can be a bit of a slog in places), the Uncharted games. I guess what they all have in common is that they're all really entertaining.

Strong Bad's Cool Game for Attractive People and the Monkey Island series, because they're so damn funny.

Has to be Deus Ex I play it at least once a year usualy more, it just feels great to get back in to that world, read through Jacob's Shadow, unwind the story once again. I also like playing through the old Lucas Arts adventure games. Psyshonauts would be up there as well if I wasn't always getting stuck on unpassable bugs.

Deus Ex, Bloodlines & every Elderscrolls game up to Oblivion. Need to play Skyrim but I wait for the GOTY. No desire at all to play 60€ extra for 6 DLC packs.

I play nearly the entire Zelda series once a year, it's probably tradition at this point.

Platformers of all kinds tend to be the most replayable for me. I must have played Banjo-Kazooie like a million times at this point and still haven't gotten tired of it. (sometimes Banjo-Tooie as well) The Spyro trilogy is also played a lot, usually just to relive the best puzzles like supercharge sections.

I also play Super Mario Sunshine every summer. :T I tell you there's nothing like playing a game about summer at the Florida Keys, getting in the mood for a swim, then just walking less than a mile to an actual beach.

Fallout New Vegas is pretty damn replayable.

Same with Oblivion. Probably Skyrim too, but I haven't finished it once yet.

Diablo 2 definitely, replayed dozens of times. Not any more though, after it got to the point that all you did was get to level 20 defeat the Barbarians in the Arriat Summit and then do Baal runs from then on.

I have replayed Tales of Monkey Island a few times, mostly for the great story. Titan Quest, the class combinations are staggering.
Now I can't stop playing Champions Online, all the many things you can do to customize your hero are so great that I build a new hero each day, I have spent over 100 hours on that game and half of them is in the character creator. :p
Console games like Spyro and Ratchet & Clank I can replay dozens of times, I love them both to death.

I am sure there are more but I am a bit tired at the moment and I am remembering them out of memory, if I was at my gaming rig I am sure I could think of more.

Once every year, I play through Luigi's Mansion in a single night and try to get the highest ranking. Love doing that.

I have both these games and haver never felt inclined to replay them. In Halos case I really had tyo make an effort to stick it through the campaign.

Anyway, ima choose any Mario game, FFVII, New Vegas, Broken Sword and Deus Ex.

Those are the games wot i've replayed a good bit.

Arkham City is fantastic. What's your biggest combo that you've been able to pull off? Challenge mode or otherwise? I pulled off an 86 hit combo earlier today.

And I love the Zelda games, though the one I keep coming back to is Ocarina of Time.
