edited December 2011 in General Chat
Well i was tring to find where you can post videos like you can on other forum sites, but i guess you cant, they got rules like if you repost the video over again you will get kicked, any sign of porno and get kicked (eltc) what i am speaking of we should be able to post videos here is a similar forum
http://forums.klicknation.com/forumdisplay.php/53
look around and you will find video's in their sig's and in their posts also when you reply back you are able to post videos, so should this be aloud???

a feature I saw on one forum is the only time I've seen it used well.

Also; No videos in signatures. No pictures are there for a reason.

We post so many pictures and gifs as it is, I'd shudder to think what would happen if video posting was allowed. In any case, linking is perfectly acceptable and works just great.
  • edited December 2011
I really appreciate a lack of embedded autoplay videos. If there's really a good video you want to share, it's worth the effort to describe why you like it and provide a link for those who are interested.
  • edited December 2011
i wouldnt mind being able to post a video on the forums like a jpog video, or like an upcoming trailer, or if you want something funny in the general chat area you can post the video and just click play, that way if the link doesn't work or something like that you would be able to watch it on the forums
or kind of like a movie lol

From what I understand, that would require some tricky tinkering with the forum backend, which already isn't in great shape as it is. Technologically speaking, I don't think this would even be a possibility unless Telltale updated the forum software, and there's no indication of that happening any time soon.

That said, even if it were a possibility, the Telltale admins wouldn't do it anyway. Mostly, it would just prove to be an annoying feature for most users, other than the ones who would use and likely abuse it.

on the age of champions site people use it rarlly like if a movie trailer or something, a game site with forums like klick nations it is a little bit more advanced with its technology, abling to do that, if you created an account on there right now and play aoc, there is an option, insert video here, or insert pic from computer here, i think this site would use some updating so when you get a pic too big, you can adjust it outside the internet to make it fit

I've been to (and moderated) other forums where there existed a bbcode so that youtube videos could be embedded. Granted, the TTG forums use vBulletin, and said other forums I used which had this ability used Invision Power Board.

It's not just the vBulletin thing. Not only do these forums use a somewhat dated version of vBulletin, but the software isn't even running the way it's supposed to behind the scenes. I'm not sure what the coding equivalent of jury rigging is, but that's what I've been led to believe is going on here.

We have a whole new site coming early next year, including a new and much improved forum. As of right now, we're planning to switch over to Vanilla Forum.

By new website, I think he means one that is just upgraded to the point it will look new. They (hopefully) arent scrapping the whole website code altogether and delete everything.

It will be a completely new backend, and the plan is to import existing user data.

so you are scrapping everything, but are keeping the code for accounts? Interesting.

Ooh! Can we pleasepleaseplease have those alternate post count numbers that fluctuate randomly, regardless of actual post count? Those were so cool.

So... all past threads will disappear? No! But my absolutely scary amount of posts in the Doctor Who thread will be lost forever!
  • edited December 2011
I think that existing threads would consist of user data. Maybe?

Quick! Better copy and paste the entire thread so that you can systematically repost it all once the forum changes.

It will be published with a foreward by Professor Stephen Hawking, and titled 'Whatever's on Your Mind; A Study of the Human Psyche'.

will it still be called www.telltalegames.com? or no
  • edited December 2011
URL and everything would still be the same. It isnt hard to completly change the entire website, but keep www.telltalegames.com.

Does anybody actually read anything other than the last two pages of that thread anyway?

No but... IT MUST BE ARCHIVED AND RESTORED!

That thread is like THE history of Telltale.

The import options for Vanilla seem solid, so I wouldn't worry too much about it. You can export vBulletin data to almost anything.

Not sure how many other sites use Vanilla, but it's working out well enough for Penny Arcade.

What about my login status? Will I lose my login status once the forum changes? Or what about "Respond with a Telltale Quote", "Respond with a quote from anything" or "Game Quotes game"? Or all those topics I have made? :(
  • edited December 2011
I've lived through similar transitions on other sites and thought I would put some people at ease. For starters, www.telltalegames.com is their domain or address that points to the actual site. The site is actually broadcast from an IP address, so as long as they keep the same internet provider or redirect the domain to their new IP address, you'll automatically find yourself at the new site. As far as everything being moved over, all user accounts, topics, forums, and even individual posts are easily preserved and moved. The end result just being an (hopefully) easier to maintain site and forums, and a more robust user experience. Basically, everyone with concerns just needs to simmer down. You won't lose anything and stand to gain a lot.

I'll take a look at Vanilla in a minute. ;)

Concerning the OP, however - hopefully, this remains in its old shape. No videos in posts and no pics in sigs. I hate those forums where every post is a whole mess because of massive signatures and integrated videos - and should there be an option to not display those, I couldn't use them, because as a moderator, you just have to see it all! ;)

Slightly increased avatar size would be welcome though. But no animated gifs any more, ugh. :)
It will be a completely new backend, and the plan is to import existing user data.

I hope there's a way to retain that data. Not that I wouldn't condone a "fresh start". Just checking how long I should withhold my massive yet-to-be-written Jurassic Park review. :D :D

And, guru, maybe it IS worth repeating. ;)

I think embed options for video is a must.

I think you should restructure the forum like the new Youtube layout. Every new post in this forum, no matter where, will be displayed with a larger than needed preview screen in order of time posted. Only 10 per page though.

I imagine we'll bring the posts over as well as the user accounts. When we moved from the old Java based forum to vBulletin in 2006-2007, we brought over all the posts. Tradition!

Ooh! Can we pleasepleaseplease have those alternate post count numbers that fluctuate randomly, regardless of actual post count? Those were so cool.
Confirmed this will not happen, unless people get really bored again (or I accidentally blank the post count table and have to hurriedly rebuild it again).

All of that will stay. Already been said, and they are redesigning the whole thing, but keeping the data.

We will just have to wait and see for the new look.

Or you could just set all existing users to 10,000 posts each, and make all the newcomers' eyes bug out when they see how much they have to post to catch up!

Or alternatively, 9,001, so we can all say that our post counts are over nine thousand...
