Add to that the fact that you can't say jack shit on the forums that *might* even *remotely* offend someone lest you get banned from not just the forums but the games as well, and you see why Origin isn't really that liked.

My main reason to stay far away from Origin.
I don't understand the customer service thing though.
I had one customer service request from them and got an email answer in under 1 hour on a sunday. Try that on Steam.

I didn't think Humble Bundle could put out a more unappealing bundle than Origin, but they proved me wrong. The Humble Weekly Bundle as decided by PewDiePie. Unsubscribed forever, Humble.

They are still good games. Recycled games we should all already own, but they're good games.

It's mainly petty fanboys who voted it worst company over companies that are actually being horrible instead of putting minor restrictions on video games.

I actually find it kind of fitting Bank of America consistently gets to be #2.

For the record, this week's Humble Weekly bundle is indeed handpicked by PewDiePie. They are:

    - Botanica
    - McPixel
    - Thomas Was Alone
    - The Showdown Effect

...with Amnesia: The Dark Descent being a beat the average (currently $2.16) thing.

Yes, you should already own these. And yes, PewDiePie is no IndieGamerChick.

I admit this is probably a futile effort at this point, but I am going to ask, VERY politely, that you try and tone down the negativity in this thread. Like I say, probably pointless, but whatever.
If you find an accurate assessment of your decisions upsetting, maybe it's not my fault. If people don't want to hear that they make selfish, greedy decisions based entirely on getting cheap stuff, without caring about principles, then they shouldn't be so selfish, greedy, and unprincipled. :/

I don't know who PewDiePie is, but Charity:Water is a good charity, and Botanicula, Thomas Was Alone, and Amnesia are great games. I haven't played McPixel and Showdown Effect has a painfully small community for something that is an online multiplayer-only thing, but all told it's not a terrible selection, albeit mostly recycled.

How come I'm not surprised he picked McPixel?

Oh right, because he's in it.

Thank god I already own all of these except for one. And I don't want the one I don't already own.

If I didn't need more people to play The Showdown Effect with, I wouldn't even suggest getting this one.
And yes, PewDiePie is no IndieGamerChick.

    Understatement of the century.

Also: EA isn't the worst company in the US, but it's possibly the worst one that produces consumer-facing goods. Of course the people voting see inconveniences in playing video games as worse than massive environmental damages, war profiteering, and crippling the US financial system through greed and deception. Still, the poll DOES show that EA is incredibly anti-consumer, but people will easily handwave that if the the price is low enough.

Bribery is the best way to get people to overlook your indescretions, after all. Show people dollar signs and they won't care.

But what I'm wondering is if all the people in here screaming about ethics are so careful when buying groceries or clothes, for instance.
I try to. In day-to-day life it's certainly difficult, but I try to opt for locally-sourced business options whenever possible, I try to support art that is risky and personal, I try to make conscious purchasing decisions.

But yeah, often I'll also make a greedy, shitty choice because something is cheap or convenient. We all do. Doesn't mean we have any right to intellectually defend those decisions.F

EDIT: I actually went to check what EA-published titles I own after this, and realized....I don't have many. Mass Effect 1-2, Dragon Age: Origins, and Star Wars: The Old Republic. I own four. I would count Brutal Legend, but I actually never bought it until after Double Fine got the publishing rights back.

Oh geez, fucking PewDiePie is worse than EA! What the hell, Humble Indie Bundle guys!?

Might as well have named it the Rape Gay Black Women Jokes + Hail Satan bundle!

For those who don't know, PewDiePie is a Lets Play-er who frequently makes rape jokes and other very offensive jokes in a futile attempt to be funny. He's annoying and hateful. Not someone I'd want to associate with.

He's also insanely popular because he plays horror games and screeches like a hyena at everything. And that's all it takes to be funny and endearing, I guess.

I did not know that. My only exposure to him was this.

...doesn't look like a good week for Humble Bundles publicity-wise, huh?

Well it's Pewdiepie's charity campaign he's trying to raise money for...

He has enough of fanbase the weekly sale will probably sell adequately...

I know nothing about him other than his Fans/haters spam every comments section at some point...

OK collection of games but everyone owns them by now...

I meant his campaign thing he is doing for Charity Water not charity water himself....
  • edited August 2013
No. It's a charity that tries to gather enough water to drown Pew Die Pie.
  • edited August 2013
PewDiePoop didn't do the charity any favors with his shitty picks, nor does he do them any favors by associating with them. He's on my list of internet celebrities who should go away entirely.

And I sure as hell am done supporting HIB now. It's not UNCOMMON knowledge that the man makes a rape joke every fucking sentence, not just about himself being raped but also about RAPING EVERYTHING IN SIGHT.

Are you trying to convince me now that HIB is sincere in giving to charity? Okay, they better make their next hundred bundles all directed right at help for rape victims. This is a pathetic grab at PDP's sad, massive fanbase. Now I know just how low they're willing to sink. I thought EA was unfortunate. This is offensive.

Yeah, and have it be sponsored by Double Helix.

If I had my way with indie bundles, it would be Blackwell something (I'm still not certain which Blackwell game should be in the bundle, probably all of them, but I mostly would want Blackwell Epiphany, which isn't even out yet), and that's basically it. Maybe Bad Rats, because everybody has to have this game. Trololololol, and shit.

    EDIT: Go Home Dinosaurs!

    That's good. :)

True, there's nothing wrong at all with defending morally good decisions, just try not to go on the offensive, please. :) Your remark about "idiots" just rubbed me the wrong way; of course I realize it wasn't aimed at anyone personally.

As an example, I'm a vegetarian, but I don't go around preaching to people that they shouldn't eat meat, precisely because I know how annoying that is (and because I'm as much of a hypocrite as anyone else in many aspects).

Now, as for those Humble Bundles... the problem is this weekly scheme that they've chosen to adapt, I think. They're forced to come up with something new very often now, and that has sadly resulted in some unfortunate choices.

Personally, I'm a bit on the fence about the PDP bundle... would getting the bundle constitute personal support for him or not? Does the end ever justify the means? Is it all some sort of metagame that the Humble Bundle people are playing with our minds? Decisions, decisions...

In the end, what matters is that everyone makes their own, personal choice that they can morally justify. It would be great if the world was an ethically black-and-white place, but it only consists of 50 billion shades of gray, which makes calibrating one's moral compass pretty difficult.

This makes me imagine a bondage-themed sci-fi rock opera for some reason.

Not sure why it's sci-fi or a rock opera.

OK, so people have their issues with the Origin bundle. Fair enough. But even so, it's hard to say $5 Million, most of which will go to charities, is a bad thing.
  • edited August 2013
Roughly $4,600,000 is allocated to charity, based on the assumption that multiplying default charity allocation by the number of bundles will give a good rough idea.

The defaults also imply roughly $933,000 to each charity.

And a bit over $800k for Humble Bundle themselves.

The defaults are probably a safe bet because, again, most people are treating Humble Bundle as a cheap key reselling service, and the minority that actually moves the sliders is probably small enough to not affect the numbers in a significant way.

I'm severely tempted to buy it again now and make my whole thing a humble tip, just to irritate Dashing.

Not going to really defend Pewdiepie since I really don't like the guy's content, but last I checked he was advertising and enjoying McPixel and got into the game because of that(similar to Jesse Cox/OMFGcata), not the other way around.

Yes that. His "wonderful" and "well behaved" fans were one of the main reasons McPixel got through Greenlight. Sosowski doesn't seem to like him much though. The solution to his puzzle couldn't be any clearer on that.

The humble bundles change often so I have no problem waiting for the next one. Obviously not every bundle is going to meet your expectations, but it will eventually be switched out for something (hopefully) better. There is no need to get so worked up over the weekly bundle especially now that it will be gone in 2 days.
  • edited August 2013
Except it's not about Humble Bundle making a bundle we don't like, or a bundle that wasn't to our liking on a "thing we don't want to purchase" level. It's about Humble Bundle making things that don't ethically match up with the high standards they set for themselves, standards which informed the Humble brand throughout its early years.

Well, undoubtedly they are going to change over the years and make a few shitty bundles. I mean they are letting you pick a price you want to pay and how much you want to go to charity, I could care less what companies or people chose to support. If I want the games, I'll buy it! Maybe that's just me though...Regardless, the bundles will be switched and hopefully they will get back on track with their 'regular' bundles.

The Origin bundle has quickly become their most successful bundle ever.

I suspect things are only going to get worse from here. =/
