The joke is that everyone claims that the jump to 3Dwas what causedSonic games to start sucking and "killed" the franchise. I don't agree for the most part,but I've always wanted to draw Max holding up someone's decapitated head a la Hit the Raod, and the joke practically wrote itself.

Ohhhhh... I'm not into Sonic, I guess that's why I didn't get it. : / All I know about Sonic is from what I watched from some kid playing it on a Gameboy back in middleschool.
Dunno how that head shape works. its like an egg or something. It's the symmetry that Steve gets that makes his work stand out from the crowd. I went to Pixar last year and saw his colour work. instantly recognizable. (Also saw they had some framed Sam & Max originals in one of the upstairs rooms. Very cool)
I'm in a real artistic rut at the minute. All I can draw is Mario Mario Mario. I hate the guy and I hate Nintendo even more, but I can't not draw Mario.
So I thought it'd be a good idea to try and draw Max instead.
