Let's Play - Legend of Grimrock

edited April 2012 in General Chat
I've been wanting to do a LP for a while, but due to technical difficulties and lack of time, I've been unable to.

But St. Eddie (Davies), suggested that maybe I should just do a typed up one instead.

You know what... I'm going to take you up on that.

So for the past hour or so, I have been working on the first chapter of the grand voyage into the unknown.

Which can be read here:

http://www.scribd.com/doc/88921289/LP-Legend-of-Grimrock-CH-1

http://www.scribd.com/doc/89511957/LP-Legend-of-Grimrock-CH-4

Not so eventful, but all journeys have to have a beginning! Right? :o

So the game I chose was Legend of Grimrock.
A perfect choice, because I literally just downloaded it, and I want to be driven to play it.

So yeah. Enjoy. :D

(NOTE: It may take some time to upload the files, so chapters may not be immediately available)

EDIT: Updated with link to chapter 4.

    Hah! I'm on level 4. ;)

All right, maybe I have just fallen into level 4 but quickly returned to 3.

    Oh shush!

I've only literally just got the game, (spent hours on the bus waiting to get in and download it).

Plus playing the game is going to be slow, when I have to type it all up at the same time too!

Working on Chapter 2 as we speak. Haven't left the first room yet! XD

still downloading. But why make a written Let's Play?

    (a) The game has only been available for three hours.

    (b) I was really impressed with how you've got so far with the 'letswalkplaythrough' in such a short period of time.

Ketzer, what's your internet DL speed?!

Every time I have tried to make a video LP. It ALWAYS FAILS!

Either one piece of recording software fails, or someone drags me off in the middle of a game.

This way I can go at my own pace! :D

EDIT: Chapter 2 is uploading now.

(I think I'm going to keep these relatively short, file size and all that)

Ketzer, what's your internet DL speed?!

178 kb/sek (my max speed sadly). And Steam was a little bit late for the party. Preorders were unlocked 90 minutes after the release when people who bought it on steam were already playing. The HIB link was no option either that had glorious 30 kb/sek.
And I don't care if the CoC(k)-purchase was a better experience because the 3 people that bought it there don't count.
Also let's just say people weren't happy on the Steam forum about that.

Think I'm going to leave it at that for tonight.
Its getting toasty here, so I'll resume tomorrow in the morning.

Time for a drink, methinks! :D

Haha. It amused me greatly when you put the torch on the pressure sensitive pad. Please can you try your best to accumulate as many rocks as possible? It could become a fun little mini-game!

Interestingly, people on gog.com were pretty mad because they suspected that the release timeline on gog.com AND on the developer's website was dictated by Steam so they could have a simultaneous release. Now THAT worked pretty well.

It might not really help you, but some people reported that those who pre-ordered on the developer's website have had an even less enjoyable time (because that one promptly crashed at the specified time - could not handle so many requests).

Seems I really lucked out this time (yes, it could have gone wrong also ;) ). I started downloading one minute after the specified release time (wasn't even in F5 mode, been playing Anachronox before), the download took considerably below 10 minutes and the installation cost about 30 seconds (that was really scary ;) ).

All right, off to the "now playing" thread for a few praising words.

I have played 65 minutes (thanks to Steam for that data) and haven't even made it to the first Savepoint yet. Oh death my eternal companion.

The blue save crystals/stones are pretty irrelevant for the purposes of "saving". They do refresh your party, but manual save works anywhere.

But do play on, it feels pretty rewarding! :D

Well I started on hard and will (hopefully) only be using save-crystals.
Managed to clear the first floor now. Later I will go deeper. Also found 2 secrets.
Edit: 3 secrets on floor 1 now, not counting the one you are told to find.

Well, chapter 3 is uploading now.

I am really enjoying this game so far!
(Just a shame I haven't actually got anywhere yet! XD)

    EDIT: Chapter uploaded. Enjoy.

You really need to keep a rock tally, Retro, so that we can know how your collection is going.

    Agreed.

Also, once you near the end of the game, I want you to empty your rock collection upon the floor and if possible, form a rock-based pyramid of awesomeness.

Indeed. This game will probably be bad for me and my treasure hoarding ways. Even when I create characters who need very few pieces of equipment to survive in RPGs, I always end up picking up everything and carrying it around for no apparent reason.

I'll confess that, at the end of Baldur's Gate II, I had no less than 200 Potions of Extra Healing and about 50 Potions of Superior Healing... and I still used clerical spells for healing because I didn't want to waste the potions.

The only items that you'll need to horde in this game will be rocks. It is called 'Legend of Grimrock' after-all!

Seriously though, I know what you mean. I had an obsession in 'Skyrim' with collecting every single book in the game. At times 1/3rd of my inventory space was taken up with books (which I hardly even bothered to read).

Try it on easy. Although the puzzles are the same, of course, you're much more likely not to bite pieces out of your keyboard after meeting
    your first Ogre

I just entered Level 4. Oh my. Level 3 was special. I went back to the save crystal so many times (to save potions) I can make a map of the place without running the game. Also I hate the new monsters in Level 3. *avoids spoilers*

On level 6... starting to get really interesting. Some not-so-subtle respawn points there, solving my minotaurs' starving habit. But damn, I wish I could kick that Rogue out of my party. Or give my mage a different name than the accidental "New Prisoner".
  • edited April 2012

Same here. He is so useless it hurts. A second mage would have been the clearly better choice.
Also my Party of 4 has been named: John (minotaur fighter), Paul (Human fighter), George (Insect Wizard), Ringo (Lizard Rogue).
Or at least let me re-assign the skillpoints for Ringo. He has some completely wasted ones.
  • edited April 2012
Steam is updating the game now. I wonder what the patch does...
Let's hope it will not delete my savegame.

Mind mentioning which ones are wasted for those of us who might want to play the game at some point?

Well I have 2 front fighters and the thief in the back. That means that the points in daggers & assassination are wasted because daggers cannot attack from the back row and I will not switch them around during the fight.
My advice: 2 mages that specialise in different schools of magic and 2 front fighters. Rogues are useless unless you give them a bow or throwing weapons.

I wonder whether a Rogue could work with fists only. The assassination skill enables you to attack from the back, but you don't really get anywhere with it because there's no real weapon skill for the Rogue besides daggers. "Weaponless" might be the better skill, it was in Dungeon Master IIRC.
