Spelling errors in subtitles

edited August 2012 in The Walking Dead
Is Telltale based in a non-English country, and then has the game translated? Every release has spelling mistakes - catch-the-first-time-playing-through spelling mistakes.

In this one, it is apostrophes in plurals. "all of the Dad's in here", etc.

Do they have someone doing this sort of check? Every volume of their past two games had at least one error on the main path. This makes 11 in a row.

I also spotted an it's - its mistake. Yet overall, there really are less mistakes than in the usual Telltale publication. ;)

Lucasarts has done that too -- it sort of ruins the main villainess' entrance in LOOM when the subtitle reads, "I am Choas." :)

Episode two clearly had more nuisances than the first. The ones below are just those I took a screenshot of fast enough. The real problem is that they're not just "typos". These aren't accidental mistakes, they seem to be connected to a lack of knowledge regarding written language conventions. Telltale still needs more man- or womenpower in this field. Damn, I'd even volunteer, but THAT level of language proficiency is still out of my reach. ;)

Who cares? The gameplay and story is ace so I can get over some spelling/grammer mistakes.

Nah. This needs to be resolved. ;)

It costs a lot of money to update games on the 36o and possibly the others its just not worth it.

Maybe they're using a talk to text program, which is a) downright lazy & b) pretty silly for a major release. Come on guys, fix the subs!

I just finished playing through episode 2. I will not spoil it, so I will just post the screenshot. The sign behind Kennys head has a typo. Is this an accurate copy of a real sign that has the typo, or did the artists get it wrong?

    Do not stack higher.
    Then, this line.

So it's a clever Meta sign?

I never even noticed a sign in the back before. I'm impressed you saw it.

The sign says "Do not stack higher then this line". It shouldn't be 'then', it should be 'than'; "Do not stack higher than this line".

Pedantic of me to notice and point out, I know, but I am somewhat of a grammar nazi at times, being British and all.

lol, I'm English, not a grammar nazi, so i thought there must have been something more than a grammar error :)

Man, I never really noticed the spelling errors. Then again, I don't read the subtitles too much - it interfers with me concentrating on the scene.

Still, that was a good catch. :D
  • edited July 2012
I don't use subtitles, they usually distract me too, can't believe they get so many runaway apostrophes out there though. I suppose it's the drawback of a quick turnaround

hehe, it's just like real life on the internet. Some people have PhD's and still use horrible grammar and spelling.

I would want to talk to the company that made the sign for 'em.

Nothing too serious I don't think. but I saw another persons playthrough on youtube that happened to save Doug (because i saved carley) that in episode 2 when you meet the St John brothers and are walking to the dairy farm you talk with Doug about the electric fence, saying he wants to look at it and see if he can rig something up back at the motor inn. He says something like "As long as the walkers aren't completely dehydrated, and the fence has enough juice, yeah, seems PLAUSBLE. Supposed to be PLAUSIBLE. They were also playing on PS3. I play PC, but i havent checked if its like this for the PC/XBOX yet. I assume it is though.

I disagree. I think it is actually saying...

"So how does a woman like you self-run this whole place?"

There's no hard and fast rule about the hyphen so I think it's actually grammatically ok as is. Not exactly proper English but then these characters aren't exactly oxbridge graduates either.

"self-run"? Is that a word Larry would use? He'd be pretty OOC.
But then again, in this scene, he's got charm coming out of his ass.

Maybe in the original script he was supposed to be a lot more awkward.

"Oh, hey there. Come and talk to me, you big sexy man."
"YES IT IS TRUE. I AM LARRY AND A MAN."
"Uh huh...Uh, are you fellas getting hungry? I can make you a plate and the two of us could..."
"SO! HOW DOES A WOMAN LIKE YOUS ELVES RUN THE HOLD PLATES!"
    "Larry, relax."
"LILY STRONG, LILY PROTECT HIS DAUGHTER LARRY. GEARED FROM DANGER USE CONVICTION LEER VERIFY ETC!"
"I'm gonna go check on Mark..."
