Episode 2 save bugs: Corrupt saves, data loss, wrong choices

edited July 2012 in The Walking Dead
Wassup everyone? I was wondering if someone ran into a similar situation?

I wanted to do another playthrough using my original data

(i copied the data from the playthrough i just finished, ep2 and saved it to a new slot), but I ran into a problem. After I rewinded my new slot to the beginning, some of the choices ive made in the first episode seem to have been changed.

the first example was when Carley is asking whether anyone knows about Lee's secret...

on my first playthrough Lee says Clem knows and he COULDN'T lie to her. When I used my newly copied slot (rewinded), Lee says that Clem MIGHT know, because he lied to her. I don't neccesarily wanna go thru the rest of the playthru cause some of my other options might have been altered. IS this a bug that could possibly be fixed?

thanks :)

Sorry if this has been talked about already, I don't like scanning too many posts with the potential for spoilers, but anyway in episode 1 I opted to save the woman. But when I start episode 2, they reference Doug as if he is a survivor. I don't know if I did something wrong or what?

I still have my saved game from the previous episode and also played the very end again before episode 2.

    Any suggestions?

I didn't save Carley, but if you don't see Doug in episode 2, then he's dead.

Ok thanks. Maybe I'll just continue and see what's going on. At any rate, you my friend, are the 25% (that didn't save Carly). Lol.

    Thanks again.

I started a new save and then selected episode 2. Instead of selecting my existing save then pressing R1 to select episode 2 (PS3).

    Anyone else had this problem?

    I'm playing on a macbook.

Just downloaded episode 2 via steam update and my save game starts from the beginning of episode 1.

I do have the option to select a start from episode 2 but it says make random decisions for all episodes skipped?

I've played through all of episode 1 (check my achievements). Not sure why the save game is reverting to the start of episode 1.

    Any help appreciated.

Their save system has issues. My 2nd save which was right at the end of Episode 1, somehow ended up at the end of Episode 2 when I loaded it. So I went in and rewound to some point in Episode 1, but it hanged on loading.

Had to shut down the program, and when I came back, my main save, which was post-Episode 2, is now back to Episode 1.

Their save system is just really badly borked right now.

Is there a fix or should I just restart the game from the beginning?
  • edited June 2012
Have you got any answer ? It's really boring… I don't know if I have to start the episode 1 again or just wait for a fix…

Can't really help much. Still, although I was rather convinced there was a finished save in slot 1 in my game, it turned out that I wrote over it for a game I started later, and that one only went to chapter four. So, are you sure the game in that slot is a finished episode 1? If you try to play it, do you get the "stats" option?

Thanks for the reply. I don't have the STATS option on my save.

That means it isn't finished - if you try to start it, what is the last chapter you can start out with? If it's six or seven, it shouldn't be a problem for you to finish this episode again to completion. Are you sure this is some kind of data loss, or did you by any chance make the same mistake I did, saved over it with a new game (which would explain the intact achievements)?

Does anyone else have an issue playing through on a second game? I finished the game on my first game slot. Now when I start either my second or third game slots the game starts at the very end of episode 2.

Save 1 is the original game. Save 2 was a copy I made of save 1 before playing episode 2. Save 3 is a new game that I played through manually.

Also... when I do try to play through and come back to menu both games save 2 and save 3 are indicating they are in episode 2. Whereas the only game I.have actually played throuh episode 2 on permanantly says episode 1. I let it run through every credit and all that. I hope my games are not screwed up... that wouls kill the biggest feature of the game and pretty much ruin the series for me. Does anyone else have this problem?

    Thanks for your advice.

If I start it the game starts from the beginning again. I've not started the game over again (not deliberately anyway). I might just start episode 2 with the random choices from episode 1. Hopefully I don't have the same problem with episode 3.

Must admit I've not been impressed with my first telltale game experience. It's a great game but this and my mouse issue (another thread) have made it a little disappointing.

Yea, I feel the same way. This is my first Telltale game and the wait for episode 2 was kind of long but I was very excited to play episode 2 last night. Yet, I also had the issue with the save function. Not being able to play through it with the choices you have already made in Ep1. Oh and too many glitches and screens that would freeze or skip to the next scene. It can't be my PS3 it's brand new.

Still managed to finish the episode. Overall, cool I hope they fix and bugs and smooth out the wrinkles in the game series. Ok Time to go play some more.

That just happened to me today when I was doing another playthrough on Episode 2. The game ended up making a new save data for me and I had to start all over since it deleted all my save data game slots . On the bright side I didn't play Episode 1 in a while and playing it again would be a good refresher. After I'm done, I'm going to back up my save on my other PS3 account so this doesn't happen again. And if it does I would just be able to restore my save back on my main account. I suggest you do the same pal incase this happens in the future.

Damn it, what I said about copying the save to another account only applies if you have Playstation Plus. I don't have it, so what we can do is try to prevent the save data by not getting corrupted. Don't pause the game during cutscenes or exit the game during a cutscene. Also don't shut down your PS3 or exit the game while it is saving. My save data got corrupted because the game froze when I paused during a cutscene.

I have the same problem on PC Steam version of the game. All 3 of my save files got somehow linked, so all my choices became the same even though they were completely separate (and different choiced) save files. Had to play through 3 times (on the same save file) to see the different consequences of actions / ways of play cause additional save files would stuff it up :\

My saved games was deleted when I left my first saved game after discovering the "bipolar bug" (every choice is upside down)... so now I got to start from the start and make 3 new plays.

    also on PC

P.S sorry for hijacking your thread.

I have this exact problem and I want it fixed.
That's the point of different Save slots is it not?
So we can see what happens if we make different choices...
But no, we can't even do that.

    I'm tired of TTG.
I just want to play the damn game.
You had a whole extra month (due to a "delay" pfft yeah E3 more like...) so having something like this happen is like digging an extra foot into an already deep grave.

This.. I even tried starting fresh and playing straight through bkth episodes. I was at least able to begin episode 2, however my choices are a weird mix of things I never selected. Ttg please respond...

I have an issue where my saved game seems to randomly generate choices for me. I clearly saved doug in episode 1, but in episode 2 i see carly, i sided with kenny, but in part 2 he says that i was against him, something is not right.

I have unistalled and reinstalled, deleted all saves and restarted everything from scratch and STILL, my choices are NOT being carried over. Has anyone else had this problem. I have the Steam version of the game.

Rewind does nothing, renaming and old save didn't work.

I'm having the same problem. I erased my other two games, but when I want to start my remaining game at the beginning of episode 2 it starts me at the end! When I leave the game to go back to the main menu and retry it tells me that I haven't finished episode 1 yet and that episode 2 is still "coming soon" which is crap!
  • edited July 2012
Also, when I play through the last part of episode 2 it tells me that my decisions were right down the middle, that 50% of people choose the same path I did on all counts. Highly unlikely.

You could try to start fresh and try removing all the content of the users/documents/ walking dead folder you may have a corrupted file. you can just cut and past in a new folder if you want to keep the files.

Same problem here. I was hoping for a patch by today, but alas.

Title says it all, really. I saved Doug on the first game, but the second episode has Carley still alive. Playing with Steam on a PC.

Anybody got a good fix for this?
  • edited July 2012
Well, I've got the Telltale Store version but I tell you what I did.

Install the new installer from Telltale Store, that's first. Past Friday Steam should have updated your game. If didn't, review your Steam game cache and, if this doesn't work, move your savegames, uninstall the game and reinstall.

Then, if you keep with the problem, replay THE LAST SCENE from Episode 1. It's not necessary you play ALL the Episode 1 or watch ALL the credits either.

    Then play the Episode 2.

Good luck! Tell us if it worked!

In my first playthrough I made some conflicting decisions in both episodes, so I decided to do another, completely pro-Kenny playthrough in my second slot. However, upon finishing up episode 1, I was surprised to see episode 2 is still marked as "coming soon" for that particular slot. The weird thing about it is I actually played through episode 2 in my first slot, and can still access EP2 there. I checked my third, empty slot as well, which also had EP2 as coming soon.

Anyone know what might be causing this?

Thanks for the help, but I'm not certain I'm understanding. By installer you mean the new Episode, right? That's downloaded and installed with no problem, and I've played a little into it (enough to know I've still got Carley). I wouldn't mind deleting what little I've played through, if it would help (saves 10 through 13 it looks like).

I'll try that first. I've just got an idea of what I did wrong -- if I'm right I'll come back and post it.

Oh, and I was in such a hurry I posted this in Discussion instead of tech support. Any Mod want to move this, fine by me.

No, the installer it's the whole game. The file I got to download to install the game (and the first episode).

Well so much for that theory. Deleting the saved games causes the game to freeze entirely. Oh well.

Here is what I think/thought might be happening. When I completed Episode I, I exited out of the game when the "next episode" preview started (yes, I hate spoilers just that much), which means it never got to the stats page, and I figure might not have saved. Now when I installed Episode II I jumped right in to the new episode (naturally) without replaying the first one. As soon as I saw Carley, I jumped back and replayed the last part of the first Episode, but by now the damage seems done.

I'll try the complete redownload and reinstall. Is there a difference between the Telltale games installer and Steam?

Anyway, there is a guy over on the Tech Support forum who recommends endlessly replaying the last part of the first Episode (while cursing furiously), until it "catches" and carries the decisions over. I'm going to really, really be hating that parking lot pretty soon...

Doug underwent a DIY sex change / liposuction between episodes 1 and 2, didnt you hear?

in all seriousness though, probably a problem that some other people on here have had with file transfer
