It wasn't live music, but it was alot better quality.
It's a pretty big difference if you listen to the music from here: http://soundtracks.mixnmojo.com/smax.htm compared to the music in the game

For some reason, the lo-fi version of Highway Surfing on that page make me want Jared to do a "Sam & Max meets The Ventures" track for the Tiny Tiki location in Season 2 even more now.

I've finished the game. It was amazing! It was really fun and I'm glad I've played it after all these years. Top stuff. :D

Interesting. The theme, Moleman song, King of the Creatures, and Bigfoot party music are taken from the CD version. The rest of them, I don't know. What's sure is that they're all synth.

Yeah, you're right, I took those four tracks from the CD, and the rest of the tracks are of course synth. I've created them using several different soundfonts (which are basically recorded intrument-sounds to be used to playback MIDI-music). I've started working on a better sounding (and more complete) version of the soundtrack, but it's on a hold for a while now, since I've got several other things to do. Maybe I'll finish it someday ;)

Here's what the new version would sound like:

Well, in the version I have and in clips I've seen on youtube the sound is not as good as the ones on that site. I really want to get my version sounding like that or find a version that already does.

Some of the notes sound a bit off

    Which is a little unprecise...

And of course the ingame music sounds different, because IF it uses a soundfont at all, it only uses one, and not several, as I did. You could of course compile a soundfont for each game, although I even varied soundfonts for the same instrument from track to track, so after all, it's not possible in-game.

Oh yes, I know the process. But you did a good job making them sound virtually indistinguishable, quality-wise, from the CD tracks.

Still, the true injustice is that there will probably never be an orchestrated version of the Tie Fighter soundtrack.
