The cause of the zombie apocalypse?

Anyone have any ideas what could have caused it? I know Kirkman has said he won't reveal it but when can still guess right? :)

i think its something religious, only because they mention religion many times in the comics and TV show

I'm going to go with the other ZA fiction and say that it is the cause of accidental science experimentation.

could be, the government could have been messing around with stuff they shouldn't

It's a virus because they are all infected with it, so I'm guessing a genetic mutation of some kind, that maybe managed to escape from a scientific lab..or it could be a Biohazard, someone released it on purpose in a terrorist act?
Or it could have happened by chance... which would be soo unlucky ;D

    Supernatural in origin.

Maybe science found some thing drilling the Antarctica ice,and released it.

Could be the next step in human evolution or just a normal virus that everyone can get that has mutated and stays in the human DNA.

I'm with DreadMagnus. Supernatural seems somewhat plausible.

I would say something Viral... Viruses mutate alarmingly fast and the way the walking affliction works suggest a viral disease.... Either that or I blame violent video games.

One day a little boy attempted to toast jello in his mom's toaster. The resulting electrical short combined with the gelatin and residual carbon particles residing in the toaster resulted in a mutant molecule. This mutant molecule attached to a water molecule when mom cleaned up the mess. Once it was washed down the drain, the world was its oyster and it spread like the plague, contaminating the world's entire water supply within days. After another month, it built up in people's brains, producing zombies upon death.

One day a boy found a rock. The rock was near a river. He being a boy put two and two together and tried to skip the rock, it just sank. Then a bear attacked him and he died.

The bear went on to go fishing in the river for pink little salmon who were trying to mate and make more salmon babies. when he went in for the fish he accidently swallowed the rock the boy had tried to skip earlier.

A fishermen had then come across the body of the boy and the bear and thought they had engaged in an epic battle. He went into town to tell everyone but they thought he was crazy. The fisherman then went back to the scene to get proof but the body was missing!

Confused the fisherman looked around the area until dark, Thinking he imagined it all he swore off getting drunk off his ass forever.

The local liquor store that made all of its profit from the fisherman soon went broke.
The desperate store owner now had to think of a way to keep his store afloat.
He had the most amazing idea of selling bottled water! He soon became a millionaire

Do you understand how the Zombie Apocalypse happen now?

I think it's supernatural too. There are too many references to the biblical apocalypse by characters and Kirkman's refusal to give it a scientific answer really make me think it's the apocalypse without god. Sort of "this is the end of humanity, the dead will roam until everyone's dead".

I don't think it's anything mysterious or supernatural at all. It's just a plague - a natural thing. It's our extinction event. It's our giant meteor. It's our Ice Age.

i think it is a manufactured airborne virus that was released into the atmosphere, with unintentional/intentional affects.

but who knows, maybe Lee is Jesus.

    this^ exactly!

i just think the only reason he doesn't say the origin is because it will make people want a "cure" whatever that may be, and make people point out how stupid the scenario is, and being an apocalypse brought down by god would be the biggest anticlimax EVER! unless they meet up with Sam & Dean Winchester kick some ass and save the world

Any catastrophic global destruction can be labelled an apocalypse and every nationality has its religious equivalent. Whether that is the cause or not, there will always be those who believe.

True. You kind of have to feel out for yourself if you think it's the characters saying they feel that way or if its the author telling you through characters what the story is about.

    I think it's the Russians!

Jokes aside, I'd really like to see what's going on in other places around the world, are they experiencing the same thing? Is it Only the US? Perhaps a terrorist attack, a weaponized virus...

Maybe it's global warming xd. Some unknown space virus thing got in through the ozone layer or something.

Nanotechnology. T'was made with an AI to eliminate cancer cells, but than it wanted to eliminate more than just cancer cells. It wanted to kill other people cause you know, robots and sh*t- dey bad.

So they kill their host, bring them back to life and bite people.

yeah i think nanotechnology is plausible, it would explain why it doesn't consume its host for energy and is able to power a dead energy-less body

If anyone's seen or read 'The Andromeda Strain' maybe its a similar issue with the one they had: An attempt to capture an organism(s) in the extreme upper atmosphere for biological weapons use leading to a runaway mutating organism on Earth.

The virus could have been use as biological weapon or as a result of an experiment gone deadly wrong and the test subject(s) escaped and caused chaos.

Basically, any theory is correct because the cause of the outbreak will most likely never be revealed. I always toyed with the idea that it was an intentional attack by some government agent who was researching the means to weaponize viruses for overseas warfare and created this virus through inhuman experimentation. Rather than report it to the government, he believed this is the perfect way to restart the human race and wipe the world clean and reveal those who are the strongest of the human race. He spread it through specific vectors all throughout the world to infect everyone.

He believed that the world was doomed with so much pollution, war, crime, poverty, famine, and disease that it was time to restart the human race and start fresh. Create enough horror and then rebuild the world with those who were smart, strong, and resourceful enough to survive; the perfect people to rebuild a strong world. They would believe it all goes back to the start of evolution where survival was the only way to make a species stronger.

Anyway, I always wondered what the general opinion on this topic was; do a majority of fans want to know? The only circumstance in which I would want the outbreak to be revealed if it was an intentional attack, thereby creating a potentially pivotal villain to go up against. Other than that, the reveal of the virus's origin really wouldn't impact the course of the story at all.

    3 words: Pox. Of. LeChuck.

Either that, or the Zombie Factory in Stuttgart.

it was me, i wished for it, but i didn't mean it (the only wishes ever granted are not really wanted) so sorry guys all this zombie fiction is just preparation for the real thing :o

Again, the best part about a fictional monster like zombies are that you can create your own reason for a ZA. Maybe Kirkman wont reveal his reason for his ZA as there is no reason for it.

Call it a man-made thing, you would assume there could be a cure.. So dont use that or eventually there would be a cure and thus the end of the story.

Call it religious, then the story can go on forever.

Some space virus, like a strage gas cloud been traveling through space for millions of years kinda washes over the Earth. Why not!

I still prefer the matress-tag theory though! :D

Sure. It was all explained in the movie Night of the Living Dead (1968). I just saw it on Cable TV today. looks like some probe returning from Venus was emitting high levels of radiation. Apparently, NASA lost contact with the probe when it started its return voyage and the probe was presumed lost.

When NASA reestablished contact with the probe that's when the radiation was detected. NASA self-destructed the probe but a little too late since now the dead are coming back to life and all.

Ok that's reasonable but then the same could be possible for any planet or a meteor or comet that got too close. How about a great underwater earthquake that releases unknown gasses that mix with our air creating a toxic gas? Or how about global warming eating away at the Ozone making solar flares more able to affect our atmosphere and cause some weird poisoning?
Anyone can sit and invent the reason for a fictional monster and really you cant be wrong. Could be something as simple as a kid playing with his Jr scientist lab toy mixes a few chemicals together pours it over a pile of dog poo and POOF!
