JP and James Cameron: A What If Scenario

So This Article Crept up On IGN the other day and I thought I'd share it with you . (http://www.ign.com/articles/2012/09/13/the-jurassic-park-movie-james-cameron-almost-made) He says that: "He and JP director Steven Spielberg were both after the book's film rights around the same time. "[Spielberg] beat me to it by a few hours."

"But after Cameron saw the film, he realized Spielberg was the right man for the job. "He made a dinosaur movie for kids, and mine would have been Aliens with dinosaurs, and that wouldn't have been fair," he continued. "Dinosaurs are for 8-year-olds. We can all enjoy it, too, but kids get dinosaurs and they should not have been excluded for that. His sensibility was right for that film. I'd have gone further, nastier, much nastier."

Now #1 JP IS NOT a kids movie, The Kitchen scene alone terrified me when I was a kid so I don't agree with him on that.

Now #2, and most Importantly, Knowing this Lets say in a Hypothetical Parallel Universe Cameron DID Make JP (Maybe with a Touch of Aliens like he said). Could he A) have done a good enough job to make it a good movie with the right scenario. and Would you in This Hypothetical Universe Go See It?

I do think He could Possibly have pulled it off But I am not so sure. (But I Love the way JP Is right now and I'm glad Spielberg directed it, No question.)

Speilberg has a better touch for the fantastic, Cameron more for the bombastic. Speilberg was definitely the man for the job. Cameron would have made it too dark or heavy handed. Spielberg can hit you over the head sometimes, but Cameron will do it with a mallet.

To be fair, Cameron probably would have captured the book's tone a little better. The book got pretty nasty. But I too think that Spielberg was the right guy for the film version.

That said, hell yes, I'd go see it in an alternate universe. At least I would now... Eleven year old me probably would have been too young.

Making it as filled with dread and as gross as possible are fine and well....but Spielberg gave the movie both a sense of fear and of majesty. If you really want a disgusting, balls to the wall horror flick out of JP, give it to somebody like Ruggero Deodato....but I doubt it would ever happen.

For me the question is, if JP would've been made by some other director, would it have changed the tech side of movie making in the same way? Sure, Cameron pushed the envelope together with ILM and Winston in just the same way with "The Abyss" and "T2" before, but while Spielberg had to go for CG dinos because of his typical "sense of wonder" style - which HAD to have dinosaurs full screen in bright daylight - Cameron might have gone way darker and less "obvious" with the animals, which might have resulted in CG never being a necessity for the dinosaurs.

On the other hand it was first and foremost ILM pushing for full CGI dinos - not Spielberg. They might have done the same if Cameron was helming the flick.

Spielberg did it and we got a great film. If Cameron had done it... I dunno. And I don't care. We got what we got.

Actually, my point is that we shouldn't dwell on what-ifs, because we'll never truly know what would have happened if Cameron had made Jurassic Park. We can guess, but that's about it.

But that's the fun (well, for some of us, not for you, obviously) of such speculations. So don't be a party pooper! But, again, thanks for telling us what we shouldn't do... we'd be lost without your direction!
