Sig Sauer P250 9MM (Latest Generation, early gens had feed issues) or a Glock 19 (not as accurate but more reliable), silenced. Huge stockpiles of 9MM ammunition, even today.
Rifles/Shotguns aren't very good for close quarters.
Definitely a melee type weapon. Not something pointed since it may get stuck in a zombie head, not a sword or machete since that could get stuck too, Maybe a ball peen hammer, a good heavy one. Blunt ends, easy to swing, lots of crushing power.
I'd go with a Fireplace poker like what T Dog has in the S3 Premier (For those who watched). You can stab with it, swing it like a bat and its good for those fence kills cuz its skinny enough to fit through. And most of all its lightweight and very sturdy. Heavy melee weapons would take a toll after a few walkers, and would slow you down. I'd be the Glenn type of survivor. Im 5'7", thin and quick on my feet. Lightweight weapons ftw.
I have a really nice, partially rusted machete resting near my bed at all times. Actually used it to chase off a would-be break-in. Would love to give the old girl some actual use.
For long distance a gun with a silencer or a crossbow (can retrieve ammo from it)
For shorter distance a "Lobotomizer" of some sort, like a heavily sharpened shovel or axe
If enough body strength, you can bludgeon them with a sledgehammer (Best weapon to least likely get stuck in a walker)
You know, the thing I don't like with melee weapons in a zombie apocalypse is that first you gotta get too close to the zombies to kill them and that can be very dangerous, you risk getting bitten and second, there's too much blood, you could get infected by the zombies' blood at least in some zombie apocalypse scenarios.
Like I said earlier I would go for a handgun, easier to carry and load and requires less space to use it.Although if one comes across a pump-action shotgun or a sub-machine gun in a zombie outbreak he should probably grab them :P
hehe i got this. a katana with a gun built into the handle for those moments when you need it the most. remember a gun is only usefull when your not in close combat. you may have a AK 47 but when that runs out of ammo and there ganging up on you that gun just became a lyability.
Close(Melee): Thats a toss up between a axe or a machete.
Close(Weapon): That would be a HK USP in .45ACP, has good stopping power and has twelve rounds.
Mid Range: Any pump action shotgun chambered in twelve gauge.
and for Long Range: The Springfield M1A, a civilian model M14 rifle. Chambered in heavy 7.62x51mm NATO and can carry up to twenty rounds. If you were in well protected, elevated position with enough ammo, you'll make sport of the Walkers.
Not a lot of hand guns kicking around Canada, which is okay cuz they're mostly noise makers anyway. I just want a pick axe and a really good hunting knife.
I would go with a full medievial armor with punch daggers attached to the gauntlets. I would be bite and scratch proof. I have actually seen these before. I would not be the most mobile, but wouldn't be worring about getting close.
Meele:
Axe me a question, I dare you.
Ranged:
stg 77 (Steyr AUG) why? Every barrack is full with that weapon and with ammo of it in my country. Until I come to a barrack a hunting rifle.
If there is really only 1 weapon allowed than I would choose the AUG. (very light weapon and I am trained in it^^)

There are, just gotta know the right people. Right people meaning the wrong kind, if you catch my drift.
German mp40 with silencer. Awesome reliable submachine gun that uses standard 9x19mm parabellum rounds that are the most common ammunition in the world. It's rugged, reliable, simply built (easy to repair), and covers medium to close distances perfectly. If you run out of 9x19mm ammo you're an idiot. There are literally hundreds of millions of these rounds everywhere.

Isn't that gun a little dated? I don't know my guns so don't mistake me for someone who does, but surely there could be something newer that is better wouldn't there be? And a common ammo type doesn't really help when you can really only find ammo at stores, or police/military locations which would most likely get overrun with a lot of people heading to those places, or already occupied by someone or people who just might not be so friendly. Can't trust anyone in the ZA right off the bait.
I would go with a small sword like a wakizashi or a gladius. Of course no single weapon is always going to be the right choice. A rapier may actually be a better choice if you are actually skilled with using it, but I am not.
Ruger MkII with screw on Silencer. .22 caliber, so ammo is abundant and light. The pistol is very accurate without the silencer. It can be used productively by most 8 year olds children. The key would be finding large capacity magazines for it.

What about a rotting skull?

secondary hatchet for close quartes i guess
Naturally I'd need ammo though...

Would a nail be long enough to hit their brain and kill though?
Australia? :P

Nope, I am from the old world. (Austria)
yeah a fireaxe would be nice but you are fucked if you are in a tiny corridor..
The exact people I don't want to run into during a ZA. I'll stick with my pick axe and hunting knife and let the "right people" make all the noise.
This. Most definitely this.
They can be used for anything.
