Isn't Portal based on the original Source engine? (as opposed to the beefed up Source in E1, E2, and TF2) It seemed that way from the videos I saw, and you'd think a 3 y/o PC could pull off old Source without many issues. :S

... no its using the "new" Source engine. It's got realtime motion blur and the dynamic light exposure stuff, all the other crazy doodads. It's still the Source engine, though, which is pretty scalable.
  • edited October 2007
Oh, I must have seen some old videos, then. (or they just didn't feature the newness)

You're definitely right about the scalability. Even though it's no longer impressive visually (for the most part, that is. It still can be quite prettiful at times.), it's amazing what it can do on lesser PCs.

And from a modder's POV... godlike.

Wait... what were we talking about again? (Sorry, Source is the new Build engine in my eyes, I can't help but rave about it :P)

source is no longer impressive visually in general? or do you mean it's just not nice looking on older PCs?

because if you meant the first thing, you would be mistaken.

Ill never get anything as long as steam backs it :P kiss my arse steam !!! sorry.. never liked any of the games made with source that were FPS.

I do mean in general, but only because I'm too observant for my own good. The second a polygon overlaps, or a texture repeats too often, I notice it and end up focusing on it. Like the wall textures in HL2: Surprisingly low-res compared to everything else in the game. Blame my analytical personality :P

Plus, I've been spoiled by stuff like BioShock and Crysis.

(Disclaimer: I'm not one of those that actually judges a game based on graphics. HL2 is one of my favorite post-2000 shooters. I just tend to notice tiny things like that.)

I built my computer to be a mid-level HL2 box for the first release in 2004 and it did alright. I just managed to lower a few settings such that the latest releases won't crash, and Portal is currently rocking my face.

That's a fun way to close yourself off from all the non-Source content delivery offered by Steam!

    *sigh*

I miss TF2 and Portal. My PC at home died, so I'm working on my G4 iBook until Apple updates the Mac Pro with (hopefully) a better video card. I may go play some Portal at work later today.

yea I should have been more specific! I do hate the steam system etc.. as for the non source games I dont need steam for most of em.. darwinia is a great example.. dont need steam to play that.. it was freeware until they got ahold of it.
I have to admit my wording was off but yes.. I do like some of the games offered.. :P Thanks for pointing that out XD.

Darwinia was freeware? Do you mean shareware? I believe it had a demo, and then you paid to unlock the rest. Darwinia is still available off-Steam, direct from the developer, as is Defcon, their newest game.

That said, with the Steam versions, if you ever get a new PC you can just log into Steam and re-download full authorized versions with one click. That's pretty hardcore.
  • edited October 2007
yeah that's what i like about Steam. All does DVD's and boxes will get lost (a friend borrows it and never gives it back or something) and now i can just download them when i want to play them (same for S&M BTW).

    Beat Portal and.... WOW.

Anyone else feel very surprised by Portal? The game's feel, humor and complexity evolves in unexpected way by its conclusion. Now I don't feel remotely bad about already owning 2/5ths of the Orange Box.

okay, now you did it...i'm gonna order that thing.

Sorry about your PC Tabacco. I was gonna say depending on how powerful your computer is at work maybe you could install Steam on it. Provided it's within the guidelines and procedures of Telltale's desktop work environment policy of course... ;)

Yeah, I've been playing it at work, but it's not the same. The upside is that my work machine is actually better all around than my PC at home.

I should dearly love to play with you all, but it seems Steam has finally decided to f[iretr]uck me over entirely, and has refused to work. Which is weird because it worked fine a month ago. Now it wants to update the Steam client but just keeps freezing at 30% and going back to 0%. :( I wanted to play Portal so badly too...

tabacco, on the Steam group page, the link for the Max for President site is wrong. It bring me to some German blog site. You have it as .com instead of .org.

I have respected VALVe's games for many years and am currently enjoying Team Fortress 2. ALOT. I laughed when I saw the option 'FPS games are for XBOX jockeys.' Almost everyone knows FPS games are much better designed and much better played on the PC :D Though I guess that option does make some sense, what with Halo out and everything.

Oh, and if you want to add me: =(eG)=CroutonsOfDeath

I'm just waiting for Half Life Episode 1 to finish downloading, and then I'll get Team Fortress as well, so I might be on sooner or later. Not a big fan of multiplayer in games, but I'm willing to check the game out, and I'll probably pop in every so often.

My Steam name's DannyH2O, by the way (don't ask about the name, it was the first thing that popped into my head).

are you guys still playing? There have been a few new interesting maps (or conversions of old maps from other games), like the murderball/run-the-intel-into-the-enemy-base map! I won't be playing much over thanksgiving (too much traveling), but look me up!
    (Steam: HotSoup88) [or try/look for: Soup88]

Steam downloaded a patch that broke my Orange Box again :(

I hope Sam & Max will never sit anywhere near the cutting edge of technology. It's very hard to be a PC gamer right now.

So, I play this game all the time. At least 3 or 4 times a week. I still have yet to play with any of the gang from Telltale. Are you guys just always busy developing games or what? Not that that's a bad thing, "work" is the best excuse and I love your games, but you can take a break sometimes right?

Maybe it's because I play late at night that I never catch up with any of you?
