Gearbox just put all the loose bits together. 3D Realms ruined Duke. I think Gearbox just wanted to be rid of the damn thing. Can't say I blame them, to be honest.
Oh, I never said they were only to blame. Gearbox did screw up their fair share of what I was looking forward to, though. We got the Douche Nukem skin, the dedicated server without any console access, viewing access, or even any indication that it's running other than a small icon in your system tray, and to top it all off, you can't even run the game while your dedicated server is running. So you can't even administrate it. Also, they pretty much lied outright by saying that the new DLC was brand new content and not anything that was previously cut to shorten the SP campaign. What else? They didn't give us mod tools that were promised from the start. They also gave us no Co-op or any decent MP. 3DR may not have had the best game design ideas for DNF, but Gearbox certainly didn't make it any more appetizing for longtime players.
Also, they're a bunch of self-centered bigots on their forums. Say one thing out of line and you're banned. I got a 3-point non-reversible infraction for calling somebody mindless. Even though I regretted it and deleted my post not 60 seconds later, it was still counted. I appealed but they said no exceptions. You can't even swear. On a Duke Nukem forum. Now, I don't swear nor do I condone swearing, but it's just another example of how two-faced, slimy, and obnoxious they all are.
Yeah, they just wanted to get rid of DNF. Can't blame them. But they could have given us what we wanted (ie- mod tools) and nobody would have cared how bad the game sucked or not. Instead they went OUT OF THEIR WAY to close it off as much as possible. Even going so far as to "fix" an exploit that allowed users to take advantage of the game console (in single player only) and spawn in monsters, weapons, etc. All this after promising that it would be first and foremost a "PC game", when it came with console controls, limitations, and "features" that are sheer annoyances. They're crooked and warped people and I dislike them.
