Hey everyone, You can talk about anything Harry Potter related in this thread. First i'll start off by saying that my favorite movie would be Chamber of secrets and i think ether that or Prisoner of Azkaban was my favorite book. Also here is a funny video i found on Youtube that shows how Voldemort
convinced Draco Malfoy to join his side
:D.

That video was hilarious and incredibly disturbing. I will never be able to think about Timon and Pumbaa without thinking about mass murder of millions from now on.

Something i hated in Harry Potter & the deathly hallows is the amount of characters who dies, In no order some of the characters are,
Hedwig,Mad eye moody,Lupin,Snape,Fred (Ron's brother and twin to George), Wormtail,Harry (He comes back),Voldermort (who didn't guess this one?).
, and there was some i didn't mention.

    You forgot poor
    Tonks, Dobby and Scrimgeour
(not that anyone liked him). I also find it interesting that in the film version,
    Wormtail doesn't die!

This. Only not just sort of.

Harry Potter is my favorite book series. I've read each of the books at least 3 times, and I have the (UK) audiobooks for all 7 books, which my wife and I have listened to so many times, we've lost count.

My least favorite book was Order of the Phoenix when I first read it, because Harry spends so much of his time angry about everything. Sure, there are a legitimate reasons for it, but he just not all that likeable in Book 5.

Regarding the audiobooks, I highly recommend the British version as read by Stephen Fry instead of the US version by Jim Dale. Stephen Fry is just better. Seriously.

Stephen Fry is better than everything.

I think Half Blood Prince is my least favorite book, I just don't think that much happens other than
    Snape killing Dumbledore

It's weird. Deathly Hallows is both my favorite and least favorite book. On the one hand, there were some moments that I absolutely adored. Infiltrating the ministry, learning the tale of the Deathly Hallows (that animation was pretty much my favorite part of the movie), Snape's memories in the Pensive... those were all fantastic moments.

But then, there were lots of things that just didn't work. Character deaths didn't seem to have as much meaning in this book as they did in previous ones. They just die and are instantly forgotten, with the exception of Dobby and possibly Snape (but they do just leave him rotting in a shack). Fred Weasley, who was half of the staple comic relief for the entire series, gets barely a few sentences about his demise. We don't even get a hint of what's going to happen to George after the series. Does he continue to play pranks in his dead brother's memory or just become a bitter, closeted man and join the Ministry of Making People's Lives Miserable? We don't even get a vague reference.

Not even in the epilogue (which reminded me of every bad fanfiction ever). I'm halfway convinced that the only reason Harry got paired with Ginny was so that they'd remind everyone of James and Lily because Ginny lost all her character traits once she stopped being the super shy little girl. Reading back through the last few books, Luna seems a much more likely candidate, given the much larger portion of time that Harry spends with her. But nope. It's Ginny.

So yeah, loved some parts, hated others.

Something that annoys me in the movies is how the cut out certain parts & characters. For example Dobby was cut out of every movie after Chamber of Secrets even through he was in Goblet of fire, Order of the Phoenix, and The Half Blood Prince books but he is only in HP & The Chamber of Secrets & HP & the Deathly Hallows movies. Also i think i remember hearing that Sirius Black's role in Goblet of Fire was bigger in the book.

I rewatched them all last month and Goblet of Fire became my least favourite movie. (before it was Order of the Phoenix) They just wasted so much precious time to show them dancing and romancing.

And yes all that house elf stuff was cut out of the movies except for Chamber which (just wouldn't work without Dobby), Order of the Phoenix (I guess someone noticed that Kreacher had to be shown at least once) and Deathly Hallows 1 where we need Kreacher to find a Horkrux and Dobby.

Good point but i still like the parts of the tournament and the start was pretty good in my opinion.

The problem with Goblet of Fire, Order of the Phoenix and Half-Blood Prince is that after you've read/watched them you realize that the only really important parts of the story happen in the last few chapters/last twenty minutes.

I think Half-Blood Prince is also my least favorite because after everything that happened in Order, seeing Harry and Co. return to their Scooby Doo antics in Half-Blood just seemed silly.

Plus, remind me why we were supposed to care that
Snape turned out to be the Half-Blood Prince
    again?

I don't know, Maybe Harry needed to think he was starting to act like
    Snape
...You know after in Order of the Phoenix when Harry thought he was starting to act like Voldermort.

I like Order of the Phoenix, i liked how Harry and Hogwarts had to rebel against The Ministry of Magic and Umbridge who has taken over the school. But one thing i hate is how fast the school stands up to Umbridge at the end and i feel it was rushed since if i remember right all that happens is
Fred & George set off fireworks and then Harry tricks Umbridge
. The fight and the last 30 minutes or so were great in my opinion.

Because he was, in a way, Harry's best and favorite teacher when Harry hated him so much.

    Because
the books flesh Harry and Snape out more as people who downright hate each other. In the movies, Snape is snide and mean, but it's never really shown why Harry just can't stand him at all.

Then it turns out that Harry learns a whole lot from him, and that it's quite probable that Harry's mother did also, if Slughorn is to be believed about her being one of Slughorn's best and favorite students.

I like the books for the humor and the interactions between the characters, not just the plot. Reading/listening about Ron and Hermione argue about "spew" is much more enjoyable to me than reading/listening about
    Robert PattinsonCedric dying
    .

Also, the lessons with Dumbledore are some of my favorite parts of Book 6. I liked that things were in a way back to normal, to confirm that it is
Dumblore who is the only real protection that Harry has left.

But one thing I hate is how fast the school stands up to Umbridge at the end and I feel it was rushed since if i remember right all that happens is
Fred & George set off fireworks and then Harry tricks Umbridge
    .
Again, the books flesh it out better. The
fireworks weren't Fred and George's final prank
in the books. It was Umbridge's first day
    as "Headmistress"
and the school, even the teachers, hated her so much that it was enjoyable for the school to turn her first day of
    victory over Dumbledore
to turn into a complete nightmare. Also, the fireworks are hilarious because they refuse to be put out.

I found that to be something of a turning point in Harry's view of Snape. I mean, he still hates him, but when he was using the book, he grew to like the Prince's sense of humor and started actually learning Potions.

That says to me that if it wasn't for Snape's immediate and unconditional loathing of Harry since they first met in book one, they might have actually gotten along. Which is kinda weird if you think about it, but given how similar Harry is, personality-wise, to Lily, also makes sense.

In the books, I think it says that Ron went into business with George and they ran the prank shop that George & Fred ran while Ron then went to work with Harry at the Ministry of Magic.

Here's Ron's page on the Harry Potter wiki where it says that Ron went into business with Fred.

That's not in the books. That's from interviews with Rowling.

There are other interviews where she says that Ron and Harry go on to become the leading experts working in the Aurors office.

Anyone ever read the James Potter series by G.N. Lippert? Fourth book is currently being released by the chapter. First three books were pretty damn good, I must say-- even as a self-proclaimed Potterphile.
  • edited July 2013
I want them released in an ebook format other than PDF. PDFs suck as ebooks, and the current tools which can convert PDF to ePub, KF8 or Mobi don't work very well.

I even wrote to the author and asked for a Kindle-friendly format, but he never responded.

EDIT: Oh, well it seems he does have them out in ePub and mobi. When I wrote to him, Hall of Elders Crossing was the only book out.

Hey, I just might read them then.

I'm more of a fan of Lily and the Half-Blood Prince. It's a very well done fanfiction-book thingee that basically goes through Snape and Lily's friendship and almost-romance, ending with the end of their association. I quite like it because it really gives some solid grounding to a lot of the Harry Potter series.

I'm curious to what is everyone's favourite book/movie in the series. We all discussed what we thought was the worst and it seemed most went to Half Blood Prince or Order of the Phoenix so I thought we might as well discuss our favourites.

My favourite Harry Potter book & movie is actually the same book. Its Chamber of Secrets for me, followed shortly by Prisoner of Azkaban. I loved the mystery of both books, but Chamber of Secrets had a bigger threat to the school along with mystery. Mystery is something I feel was left out in the later books. Yes we get a little mystery in Goblet of Fire with
Who entered Harry into the Triwizard Tournament
and in Half Blood Prince with
    Who is the half-blood prince?
But the first three books were pretty much based on mystery.
The first book was about finding out who is the teacher who is attempting to steal the stone
The second was finding out who opened the Chamber of Secrets
The third was about who and where was Sirius Black and the backstory of what happened

I enjoyed the second book's mystery & plot the best. Also it introduced some great characters like Dobby.

I'm a fan of Prisoner of Azkaban just because of all the time travel mischief.

Gonna have to go with Goblet. I loved the other wizarding communities and the Quidditch World Cup and all that good stuff. And I enjoyed the transition to a darker Harry Potter.

Personally I felt it was transitioning into a darker Harry Potter since Chamber of Secrets. The first movie was lighthearted but the second movie/book became darker with more serious themes like
Tom Riddle almost killing Harry and he only got lucky because Fawkes came and managed to heal the wound
    There was also
The students being frozen, Myrtle etc
Then Prisoner of Azkaban just made it even more darker with Harry's life being
in complete danger, Harry for the first time wanting nothing but revenge on Sirius, Remus Lupin turning into a werewolf and almost killing both Harry and Sirius and do I even need to mention the Dementors?
  • edited July 2013
Yeah, I guess you could even argue that the darker themes go all the way back to the first book-- Harry's parents getting murdered. However, to me the books really took off for the darker side of things once we saw/read Cedric's death. Everything up 'til that point sorta left things to the imagination.

It's unrelated to the current conversation but, I love the Harry Potter videogames. They aren't that bad, except for the deathly hallows games.
