The Walking Dead is ongoing. It isn't like a Final Fantasy that begins and ends a character's story within the same narrative. The comic continues to follow Rick Grimes and his group of survivors. The TV show continues to follow Rick Grimes and his group of survivors. The game had better continue to follow Clementine as she is the only known survivor (others have a strong likelihood, but not 100% guaranteed). I will still give it a chance if she is nowhere to be seen, but I will be disappointed. As much as it would suck, I would even accept her death, so long as I know what happens to her.
That said, I do not want her to be the player character. Her personality has been set up already, and while it is influenced by Lee (us, the players), she maintains her own. I also do not want to reprise the role of her caretaker. Lee spent the latter half of the game teaching Clem to be a better survivor. If we have to bail her out of every bit of danger she finds herself in, then the appeal will just wear thin.
No. Clementine should be more competent this time around. Not a generic Bruce Willis action character level of badassery, but not the scared child she was before. She can use a gun. She has experience scavenging things. She has Lee's final advice to draw from to respond to situations now. She no longer needs to screech, run and hide behind an adult. I want her to be treated as another member of the group (given tasks to complete and a job to do when things get dangerous), not an objective to protect.
I don't know, I think Clementine's capabilities are often over estimated. I can't see Clementine's role or her behaviour changing that much in season 2 from when we last saw her. She is only 9 after all. Her experiences in the ZA are very different from Carl Grimes's who spent a large amount of time on the road before and after the prison story arc. Clementine has only spent around 3 or 4 days on the road away from the protection of the motor inn and has been sheltered much in the way Sophia is in the comics. I would still expect her to be scared and hiding when danger presents itself .
Lee's pep talk was enough to give her the courage to flee the city on her own but not enough for her to survive long term. Can she even cook or make a fire? The deaths she has seen have made her emotionally stronger and probably less optimistic but I wouldn't expect a big transformation as the game will probably pick up shortly from when we last saw her.
Clementine would be alright if trapped by a few walkers if she had bullets but I don't think she could get very far beyond that. I think the adults in the group she joins will still treat her as a child. Because of where Telltale left it I don't think time can advance that much. If Omid and Christa find her they will feel responsible for her safety and honour Lee's dying wish, so they would probably be over protective of her. They wouldn't want Lee's death to be in vain. They would treat her the way he did since her safety would be paramount. I would still expect her to be left with a baby sitter during supply runs.
I'm going to play season 2 regardless of Clem's appearance. But I think if she were included in S2 we wouldn't be her caretaker, we might be spectating someone else taking care of her, so the relationship would be limited between our new PC and Clem.
It's not a problem this time because Lee has died. Season 1 was constructed around Lee's and Clem's relations, around Lee's sense of duty to protect her at any cost. Now game creators can easily take Clem away or maybe move her aside to play a supporting role in the game's scenario.
Of course I would. To be honest I was kind of hoping that Clementine wouldn't be in the next season after what had happened to Lee and that we could play as someone new with their journey into the zombie apocalypse being told instead but if the ending of season 1 was any indicator at all of what's to come then I'm pretty sure she’ll be in it regardless.
Season 1 was epic and I'd preorder season 2 right now if I could. The only question is if I'll buy season 3 which depends if season 2 is good or a flop. I like the way our in game choices carry over to future episodes. Not sure how that would be accomplished if no one who knew what your choices were is alive or in the next season. I think Clem and/or Lilly needs to appear to carry over our choices to the next season.
Yes, I'd definitely play it if Clem wasn't in it, but I don't think the game would exist without at least a cameo of Clem. The ending indicates that someone finds her, and my theory is that's the season 2 protagonist and a companion. Now, whether or not they meet up with her early in the season or at the end of the season is debatable.
I agree with many others here: I don't want to take the role of Clem's caretaker again. It would cheapen the relationship between Lee and Clem throughout Season 1. But I do want to see how she is at some point, to make sure what Lee taught her helped her survive.
I really liked the first season because of the emotional relationship to the characters and the choices you had to make. So, I will definitely play the second season even if they don't include Clementine. I'm sure the developers are able to tell another great story.
I would play it only if it has Clementine in it. She is a very important character the emotional bonding relationship with her and Lee was very special like a protector and father like-figure he was to her, now that her parents are dead and Lee gone she has to learn how to survive and what everything Lee has teach her I believe she will become a stronger person and knowing how to survive in this post-apocalyptic world with walkers, bandits, bad people I believe she will be stronger now. All the people she cared for are now gone and she will stay strong even more so than ever and to survive.
I hope the story will strongly involve her and should be set right after the end scene where Clem is in the paddock fields and see's those two figures in the distance of the hill i wonder who they are? are they walkers? or Christa and Omid? will they come to her and protect her.
I believe that Clementine will be a much more stronger girl than in season 1 she won't be scared she will learn to be a survivor this time. They should include flashbacks from Lee and her, and even her parents. What Lee has teach her will make her go forward and survive and knowing that Lee wants her to survive to keep pushing herself to move forward.
If they don't include her in season 2 it will be very disappointing I might even pass on it, but i think she will be a bigger part in season 2.
I hope the saves will transfer to season 2, because i was happy with my decision making. I was very nice and protective to Clementine and would like those memories to be remembered when playing season 2.
If she isn't in the second season I'll be glad. If she is, Telltale will probably try to make us her caretaker again, which would just be tedious and dull. If she is in the second season, that's fine. But if we're her caretaker again, I won't play it. That would just result in reused story lines and would undermine anything that Lee did.
I think it would be interesting to see us not in the caretaker position,I mean a bunch of people,me included chose decisions that maybe we wouldn't have done if Clementine wasn't there, for example taking the food,or killing both the St.John brothers. Though to answer the question,I will play either way,I am just a huge fan of everything TWD,except Survival Instinct, ooh, just thinking about it makes my blood run cold.
Will play it regardless. The game will be brilliant no matter what. I would prefer it continued Clems story as I think the comic is good because its continuos plot.
I'd like Clem to be in it, but to be somewhat like I imagine Ellie from The Last of Us will be like. Can definitely hold her own, but still needs some looking after.
Oh well this sucks. I just posted something in a different thread that would have fitted in nicely for this topic. I'll quote it in anyway, sorry to anyone who has seen it then sees this DX I promise I'm not trying to spam...
If an entire game series' playability revolves around one character, one plot point which if they removed would cause the entire next season to collapse and become instantly disliked without even giving it a chance - is it really a good game in the first place? Are you really enjoying the game if you're only playing it for one thing?
Surely a close to perfect game would be able to easily keep interest going no matter the absence or death or twist. The other characters and environments (and story) should keep things going.
So I just find it a little funny when people say it's the best game they've ever played but wouldn't touch the series again if Clem was written out/died/whatever.
I would play it either way for sure because I loved Season 1. I would love Clementine to be in the Season 2, as she was a great character, but I would not want to be her guardian like Lee was in Season 1. I feel like if I was her guardian again it would be repetitive and I don't think another person could have that same connection that Lee had with Clementine.
saying you're not going to continue the game again just cause one character is gone is stupid. Reminds me of the outrage at telltale people had for killing off Carley. This game isn't called "The Walking Clementine" and it never will be, She's a sweet girl and one of hte best child characters ever made, or THE best, but thats just really stupid, in something like the walking dead, noone is the main character. It's about survival and how people ..humanity..deals with it.

There seems to actually be quite a streak of awesome child characters in gaming lately. It's good!

By the end of season 1 I was absolutely hoping and expecting to play as Clem. It seemed like the only logical thing to me, and I was very much looking forward to it. I wouldn't mind if there were several playable characters with Clem only being one of them, and I did like what I saw in a trailer for a season 1 DLC that didn't include her.
I could see various things they could do in season 2, including disposing of Clem in some way or another or never even bringing her in, but considering everything they'd be taking a risk of alienating many fans. Even if the game is fantastic, if you break expectations for something that was pretty much a promise then you risk having the player's entire view of the game being colored by that disappointment.
I would like to play the game I've seen in that trailer, which appears to be a Clem-free DLC. I'd also like to play the game I expected, with Clementine as the main character.
I'll be gutted if Clem isn't in season 2 but to be honest I don't think playing *as* her would be the same. One of the most emotional aspects of TWD was making decisions with Clementine in mind. A great example is in Episode 2. I killed the first brother but when it cut to her crying "no" I felt so terrible I couldn't kill the second.
If you're making the decisions as Clementine instead of for Clementine (see what I did there) then it won't be as emotionally heavy.

Maybe, but I felt like she and Lee really were a team, and by the end I felt like she was really maturing and I wanted to see things from her point of view and do things as her. I think living in that kind of world as a child is a whole different experience, and one that I really want to have.
It'd certainly make the zombies seem more intimidating during the occasion first-person moments!
I didn't even think of that! I was just thinking of navigating the world while I'm smaller, shooting a gun, interacting with adults who think I'm "just a kid", and how I'd view the world more innocently. I didn't even think about how the size and strength difference would make the zombies look scarier.
BTW, anyone ever wonder how civilization is supposed to fall apart just because of dead people turning into Walkers? They are slow and stupid and don't even multiply all that fast. The neighbor with the shotgun should be enough to keep the block safe, let alone the local PD, and as to the military, who even needs them? In order for this scenario to be realistic the appearance of the zombie virus should be accompanied by a plague that causes everyone around the world to get slick and die slowly over the course of several days, so they all crawl into their beds because there's no room in hospitals and the doctors are sick too, and a few days later half the people, selected at random, are dead. That would cause society to collapse and allow the kind of chaos and the large Walker population we've seen to actually happen. So the game IMO (I don't know about the comic or TV show) hasn't properly thought out how we go from a few people who die every day all the way to a zombie apocalypse. There's just a missing link, and this plague suggestion would have filled it. You could even make it so the plague was engineered by aliens to get rid of the indigenous population of Earth and turn it into a mindless work-force under their control, if you felt like mixing genres and adding genocidal colonialist aliens as yet another even more colossal threat later down the road, one that might possibly be overcome and might hold the answer to either curing or killing off all the zombies.
Until I saw posts about it on forums, it never would have crossed my mind that Clementine would be in Season 2. We drop out of her story while she's still alive and there's still hope, that's as much as you can ask for in the Walking Dead universe.
Lee and Clementine are two of the best video game characters ever created, in fact I'd say they're two of the best characters period. The great thing about them and their story is that it has concluded, and nothing that happens moving forward can tarnish it. We'll never get sick of Clementine, and we'll never suddenly have a moment where we start questioning the way she is written, season 1 is a perfect story.
Also, it seems criminal for Telltale to not do what they do and give us fresh characters to care about. Remember when St John grabbed Clem in episode 2 and how angry you felt? That was an episode and a half after you first met her. Telltale can easily make you care just as much about new characters within the first episode of season 2. I will be fun to see new and different character dynamics.

After episode 1 they showed a preview of season 2 which showed Clementine in a field somewhere holding a gun and watching 2 people walking on the top of a hill, ready to shoot them if necessary. Also, episode 5 felt to me like the game was transitioning towards Clementine being the main character, with more and more direct control over her actions, albeit masking it as Lee telling her what to do.
Omid and Christa are to me an example of Telltale failing to present good characters. It's not exactly that there was something wrong with them, but somehow they were missing a certain spark that everyone else seemed to have, and as a result I wasn't able to connect with them and didn't even want to see them at all. In the beginning I still had hope for them, but somehow I feel like it got worse later on. Part of it is that from episode 3 I started to get the sense that everything was futile and outcomes were set in stone and that nothing I did mattered in the end, but even so I liked Chuck, Molly, and even Vernon and the other cancer survivors. I even tolerated Ben more than them, and I like him even less. Telltale can goof.
EDIT: Other than Clementine all other characters would be new or like-new. Lilly could theoretically still be alive, and there's Molly, Vernon, Omid, and Christa. The last three are still pretty close to being strangers, and Lilly would make for an interesting reunion, considering the circumstance under which she left. However, considering how many new characters Telltale threw at us every episode we are likely to see about 10 new characters just for Clementine's group, not to mention all the antagonists, other groups, passersby, and so on.

I do agree completely they did a much better job with the original characters than the ones they introduced later in the season. Aside from making Molly a bit far fetched, I thought all the other new characters were solid additions.
I don't think it's ever been stated by anyone that the epilogue with Clem in the field was a preview of Season 2. At the time the game was released they didn't even know they were making a Season 2. It was a brief glimpse for the player (who's only ever seen the world through Lee's eyes) showing that Clem made it out of the city and will be taking the lessons she learned from Lee out into the world. It was the end of her story in my opinion.

Then why was it called season 1? From what I read they were planning a series with multiple seasons from the start, although I don't remember the source.
Anyway, I would be disappointed if I didn't get to play as Clementine, but that doesn't mean season 2 has to have her to be good.

It wasn't called Season 1, it was called Walking Dead- The Game. It's been referred to as Season 1 in retrospect as we now now there's a new season coming.
I'm not massively opposed to Clem showing up at some point, but playing as a kid would be terrible IMO. She'll have very little sway in a a conversation among a group of strong willed adults, she's in no position to threaten and will command no respect. It would be an absolute blast for something like 400 days for a fraction of an episode facing those kinds of challenges, but not for a full season.

So then what we want to play is different, and our expectations for how the game would be with Clem as the main character are also different. Perhaps they could somehow accomplish both of our desires. But you may be right that playing as a kid would just be a novelty that would wear out pretty fast. I can only imagine it lasting one episode before they would either need to change Clem to make her more mature or replace her, but then maybe my imagination is too limited.
At the end of the day, Telltale did an excellent job with season 1. I'll just trust them to do at least as well with season 2, no matter the direction it takes. The Walking Dead is the first zombie story in any media that I liked from beginning to end and was able to stomach enough to see it through to the finish. It's the game that got me to think about zombies and actually like the genre, although that doesn't mean my interest will carry me to other works in the genre, on account of being squeamish and not trusting them to be as good.
To start off,I'll answer the question,I would play it either way, though I feel it would be interesting if we didn't have Clem with us,sp that we wouldn't have a moral compass,in 400 Days it seems we may not have a moral compass like Clem woth at least a couple of the characters,so I would kind of like to see what people would act like without a child watching over them, making them think about what they're doing.
Basically,I would like to see how people would act if they never had someone like Clem. For example, would a lot more people kill either of the St.John brothers without Clem there.

If you are a bit squeamish then maybe not the TV show, but the Comics isn't as bad considering it is just a comic, but the story in the comic is amazing,IMO that and the story of this game are equal, the TV show though in my opinion, isn't as good as either of them, but it is still okay.
P.S. Sorry about making two posts one after the other,it is because they are on two different matters.
