Recycling VAs

edited August 2013 in The Walking Dead
This is becoming a really regular thing in TWD game for example: Cissy Jones voices Katjaa, Jolene, Brie, Dee and Shel. What do you think of the "Voice Actor recycling"? Are you okay with it? Do you hate it? Do you not even notice a VA doing multiple voices in one episode?
I personally think it's okay. Besides a couple of people, I didn't really notice that many repetitive voices.

I think she's talented and can pull off many characters. I don't really care about it.

I am more then okay with it, most of the time I do not even notice it's the same voice actor, except Trevor Hoffman, he always sounds like Ben but he still did a good job.

    Recycling's good for the planet

And for Telltale, they both win.

It takes me out of the game when i hear Katjaa's voice on a different person, same with Justin being Ben's voice. Even Vince being the stranger from ep5, but he sounds pretty different. I dislike it personally. Ill get used to it, but if theres anything i remember, its peoples voices, its my own little kink, pretty good hearing, so hopefully they wont recycle them too much in season2.

I like it. There's some voices I'm very attached to, such as Cissy's and Adam's and I enjoy hearing shades of a previous character in another.

Except this went against Justin in 400 Days. He was BENTIN and had to die.

Although, I had no idea Molly's VA also did Bonnie. That was a nice surprise.

I knew that Justin was Ben, but it was not right of the bat, it took roughly half way to figure it out, so he did a good job.

I had no clue Jolene was played by Cissy Jones. That's how talented she is. So she can play various character on the game for as long as she wants I do not care.

I had no idea, I thought she just's sounds like Katjaa and that's it, how wrong I was.

I mean these are some talented fucking people and capable of a lot of range.

The end products are sufficiently different enough not spoil my experience playing, if anything I find it more enjoyable. Attachment and all that.

That is how I see it, it causes no problems and sometimes rarely is better, I mean I picked Justin for many reasons, but a small reason was because Ben must live this time anyway.

I like the idea of returning VA's. It's always a treat to hear voices from older Telltale games like S+M or BTTF.

I know, they are both good voice actors, and good Easter eggs to people that have played Telltales other works.

The voices are generally so different and varied that it's impossible to notice without checking. Be honest - how many people knew that Screaming Street Lady was voiced by Clementine?

This is news to me. I honestly haven't noticed even one voice that was used on somebody else. These were all interesting to find out but damn. Screaming street lady is Clementine. That's twice in one night this forum has blown my mind. The first being Kenny is the voice of those weird little Ferby dolls

Google says it's one of the Telltale artists, Jolie Menzel.

    Otherwise, mind blown.

Melissa Hutchinson did the original voice, but it seems Telltale used someone else, but she did do it.

I love it. It also helps the actors develop better ranges.

The only one I can slightly notice and only because I heard people say it on here was Ben is Justin. I can usually tell in games when they're recycling VAs' cause it gets really annoying usually but The Walking Dead did an excellent job with their voice actors.

Is this like the Doug situation?

I heard somewhere, recently in fact, that composer Jared Emerson-Johnson voiced him (or did it originally?) but Sam Joan is credited.

With a voice cast as talented as the first season had, I don't have a problem with seeing some people returning. Like Cissy Jones, I had to have her differing roles pointed out to me with the range that she has.

Oops, I stand corrected then. My bad!

I'm so-so about it. Me being a fan of Voice Acting, I thought recycling VAs was lazy on the casting dept.'s part, but then again, it gives the VAs the opportunity to try something new with their voices. So I'm quite okay with it.

I'm totally okay with it. Like many people, I noticed Justin was voiced by Trevor Hoffman in a few seconds, but he did a good job and despite the similarities, both characters sound very different: Ben's voice is always shaky and nervous, while Justin's is more controlled and stronger, which makes him sound like the character should.
I also think Cissy Jones should continue to voice half the female cast. She does an amazing job and I realise she voiced all those characters only when I saw the credits.
So yeah, I'm all for recycling voice actors if they manage to make all their characters sound different.

This blew my mind as well. I never would have seen that coming.

But, on topic, I'm ok with recycling VAs. Heck, I actually like it. In Bonnie's story, it took me a while to realize it, but as soon as I realized it, I was like : "Leland is Andy St. John! OH MAH GAWD! And why is he married to Katjaa?!" If they do a good job, I'm ok with them returning for different characters, regardless of whether they are able to do a completely different voice or not.

    I like it.

Justin was the only recycled VA I noticed. And Cissy Jones really voiced that many people? Awesome, I didn't even notice.:D
  • edited August 2013
it is their job to do more than one voice, of course having new voice actors is good, but if the voices are genuinely different it's not detrimental or confusing, so I'm fine with it

Normally I'd say, YES, alright! But from 400 days, I could tell Ben's VA as Justin so easily I was disheartened. Idk, it just didn't fit, especially since I could hear a rare crack in the voice. I'd love to see Gavin Hammon, Dave Fennoy, Melissa Hutchinson, etc. with other roles, and get to keep them in the game so it's like they are experiencing it all with us, but if it is like how I heard it with Ben/Justin (sorry can't remember the VA's name) I'd rather they stick with new voice actors. That's just my opinion on it though, if they can pull it off, I'm all for it!

His name is Trevor Hoffman, just a heads up.
  • edited August 2013
That's the one! lol I don't mean to bash on him, he did a great job and all. I could just tell it was his voice. Guess I'm a little bit more picky? Sorry.
  • edited August 2013
It's okay, to be fair he did not sound exactly the same as Ben, just similar.
  • edited August 2013
they hold auditions for each part, people apply or are asked to try out..

they pick the best voice/actor/ress for the role..

big fat hairy deal if it's someone who already has done a voice in the game...

Plus someone who they know can work with them not against them.

    I only noticed Justin/Ben and I didn't mind
  • edited August 2013
I don't really mind having recycled VAs. Oftentimes I don't even realize it's the same person, (Cissy Jones, especially) but even when I do I'm not really bothered by it. I figured out pretty quickly that Ben was Justin, but I didn't have a problem with it. I only realized that Molly and Bonnie had the same VA after re-playing through the game. During her conversation with Lee about her sister, something she said made me think, "That sounds a lot like Bonnie!"
  • edited August 2013
    I voted for 'don't mind.'

Those are the sorts of things I don't notice on the first playthrough anyway, if I notice at all.
  • edited August 2013
    the ones i've noticed.

Leland sounds similar to Chuck and Andy St.John

    Ben and Justin sound alike

    Brie and Joline were noticiable.

How about TellTale recycle Gavin Hammon as Lenny :D
  • edited August 2013
As long as their voices are not the same, i'm okay with it.

You sir, are right, one more reason to have Lenny be voiced by Kenny, just have maybe a slightly thicker accent.
