Where are all the smokers?

edited August 2013 in The Walking Dead
In this thread we post weird things we've noticed.

I don't smoke personally, but I can't recall any smokers in TWD - be it the game or the comic...

EDIT: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qh2sWSVRrmo

We've had drinkers (Chuck; Kenny; Nate), drug addicts (Bandits; Bonnie), and even cannibals, but I don't think we've had any smokers show up yet.

Weird, huh?

Are u kidding??? There's only so much violence you can have in a game!

Killing, Crazy people, Violence but smoking ... think of the children :(

Lol but no really they would be one of the first things to run out, they mention about how cigs run out pretty quick post prison arc.

Though I agree we havn't seen a smoker in any variance in the walking dead... it is slightly odd; actually was there one in the TV show I forget..

We didn't see it that much to be fair... Once was chuck's private stash.

Then there was some left in the house which hadn't been raided. That's it. Apart from that there wasn't any other examples

Reduced lung capacity... can't run away fast enough from the zombies...

...they're all dead. Each and every smoker on earth. :o

tobacco would be like gold for the first year or so of the apocalypse, it would be one of the first things i would stock up on for trading in the new apocalypse economy
  • edited August 2013
I'd only use it for trading.
In the long run, smoking is only going to slow you down.
    Not worth it.

The bandits was drug addicts?! what?!

It's funny in my class the strongest and fastest people are smoking

Quite possibly it's too early for the effects to materialize yet. Might take a decade or two :P

Dale smokes a cig during a deleted scene from season 2 :)

Ben wasn't giving them food - he was giving them prescription Painkillers...
Painkillers which contained Opium, according to Lily.
    Diet Heroin.

EDIT: Also, if you talk to Brenda, she says something along the lines of "Them people in the forest are on drugs".

Daryl and Martinez in the TV series smoke, as well as Abraham from the comics.

Another weird thing I've noticed is the lack of Silencers - I understand that they're harder to get in America but you'd think looters would stock up, in order to negate the "Gunshots attract Walkers" policy that the series has...

silencers aren't silent, they are deceivers rather than silencers, meaning it makes the shot sound like it came from further away than it actually did, it would still attract zombies
  • edited August 2013
It would be better than nothing, though. I'd like to see one with a character who doesn't seem like he'd have survived a minute, as to avoid another Molly.
  • edited August 2013
They also break after so many shots, and I believe only the military has them so they are really rare.
  • edited August 2013
Well as was explained in episode 2, the military isn't jack shit anymore, so the first place I would raid is a military camp. Wouldn't you?
  • edited August 2013
Maybe there are not a whole lot of them left, or they are so heavily populated with walkers that is not worth it perhaps?
  • edited August 2013
They'd be just as populated as the city, but with a big forest in between the city and the base, which probably wouldn't be such a problem.
  • edited August 2013
but if you are going to go into the whole raiding military camps business, why don't more people have LMG's, grenades, rocket launchers, military vehicles and just stacks of guns and ammo, basically the answer is that "other people" have them and we don't see their stories, we see the stories of the guys that have the bare minimum to survive because they are the ones with the interesting "the walking dead" stories, the story of vault dwellers is left to other apocalypse fiction, the walking dead is about living on the edge and barely scraping by day to day
  • edited August 2013
But is it really so unrealistic to have 1 to 2 silencers left behind?

not unrealistic, but more like too convenient for the walking dead, just like stacks of guns and ammo would be, and as i said they don't silence anything
  • edited August 2013
Hm, yeah, I guess. But I'd just like to see one for once. Maybe it breaks pretty soon in, who knows? You know what was really convenient? Finding Chuck and his gun, but eh, no one complained.

I know what a "Suppressor" or "Sound Moderator" is and what it does. I just say Silencer for the same reason I call a loaded magazine a Full Clip - to force Gun Nuts to try and educate the everyman.
    Seems to have worked...
EDIT: They're to muffle the noise and hide muzzle flash - not to make the shot sound distant.

Also, military-grade Silencers can be so effective that the only sound heard is that of the bolt operating. You're telling me Lee can run a Walker over with a car in neutral without drawing any attention and that's all fine and dandy with you, but a little tick-tick is like marching in a one-man band?

And speaking of convenience: Carl's eye.
EDIT: And Carl getting shot the first time.
    EDIT: Carl in general.

Carl, just saying that name is convenience.

yeah they muffle the noise, and the effect of muffling the noise is that it sounds like it is further away than it is, and no i never told you anything about Lee running over a zombie in neutral, that must have been someone else

but yeah i totally agree about carl

I was just using it as an example of something that really is convenient.
Silencers seem quite reasonable compared to it.

They don't even have to be factory-made. The inner-workings of a Silencer are not dissimilar to a car muffler - with the know-how, one could easily craft a Silencer out of an oil filter...
  • edited August 2013
Not that most people would know how to make a silencer with a car muffler.
  • edited August 2013
lol, finding a silencer on the ground is more common than the every-day skill to switch every-day car parts into silencers.
  • edited August 2013
That is true, what type of person would even know how to do that anyway.

Funnily enough it only just hit me when I said:

Got me thinking about car mufflers and the similarities between the two.
Was thinking about what you'd use as your base, starting with other car parts.

And now you and everyone else who read that post knows.
    You're welcome.

Most of us don't know the complete anatomy of a car either. And those who don't don't often mix their cars and guns.
