Why is Doug the wrong option?

edited August 2013 in The Walking Dead
When I was replaying the Walking Dead, I noticed that Carley did everything Doug did better. There was no benefit to taking Doug aside from the fact that he is the coolest character... Why did they make him the wrong option? They clearly wanted you to save Carley, what with you getting so much more time with her in the first episode. Why would they even give you Doug if they made him completely worthless? I mean, I love him, but come on.

I dont know myself. And yea its a shame. It coulve been so much more, but other than how awesome he is... Lilly did EVERYTHING better.

he means that choosing carly is a quantifiable upgrade to the game than doug. She's the love interest, helps with your past, more useful to the raid scene, her death by a pissed lilly is more shocking, and she gets more screentime.

You said Lilly, not Carley. Doug is a way cooler character though, and the only major thing that's affected is the whole telling about your past thing. The invasion isn't so bad with Doug, he even tells you when they're getting close. She loses all of her coolness after episode 1. After that, all of the cool parts of her dynamic with Lee disappear.

that warning system would have been useful and i like to imagine that doug would have been more practical and useful around the camp, but yeah with things you can do in the game using hindsight there isn't really much use for doug, you can't even tell the group about your past if you save him, but if you use you imagination and don't just go off of options in the game i think ultimately doug would be more useful because he was a smart and practical guy

yea? thats what i said. Carleys death by lilly is more of a surprise because you dont actually see Lilly with the gun until after the gunshot.

What, I think they both were really good, sure Carley got a lot more screen time plus the whole tell your past and the romance sub plot, I think Doug was a cool guy, they are equally good characters that have good reasons to be liked.

Yes, but what he meant was that doug gets severely downplayed if you pick him.

I think they're both very 'cool'.

Had Doug survived I think he had the potential to be a real badass. A bad ass armed with tactical dork nonsense, but absolutely an asset to the group.

yeah, doug had the potential to be much more awesome than he ever got the chance to be, Rambo Doug would beat Rambo every time

Doug was certainly not useless or the wrong option. Its just with Carley, with the potential for romance, we got more focus on her. If Lee had been a girl, it would probably be the opposite.

    Rambo Doug LOL.

I agree with a previous poster that Doug kinda got the short end of the stick.

From hearsay, apparently instead of feeling useless, he was supposed to be much more aggressive in episode 3... I liked it the way it was, though. If he had survived, then it would've been awesome to see him in a Rambo position.

Also, he is the wrong option. Everything is harder with him that Carley would've done flawlessly.

That moment when I realized I never saved Doug.. not once..

    I'm.. I'm a monster.

I have only saved Doug once, it was a fun playthrough.

I saved Doug once, in my second playthrough, I was doing mute Lee :D
  • edited August 2013
I saved doug after my 3rd playthrough and I have been saving him ever since. Yeah you don't get those Carley perks but as the story progresses Doug gets cooler and cooler

There is one word that can describe Doug and that word is: Awesome.
  • edited August 2013
I like to see both Carley and Doug as bros.
  • edited August 2013
Yeah , it would have been fun to see Doug and Carley develop . But unfortnately , Telltale decided that their roles are over and they got rid of them .
Don't get me wrong , I love this game and these choices but I feel like they did a mistake by killing them off early . They could of just survived with Omid and Christa and then in season 2 they can kill them off .

    Doug's epic :D

They both are, it annoys me when people dismiss either as useless or overrated there both good characters. I just prefer Doug as he just is a bit more of a unique character to Carley. I played through with Carley once and her character is also pretty interesting.

I do agree they should have added something that he does better than Carley, maybe surviving a little longer than Carley or something. Even until just the end of ep 3 would have been great. oh well

How many times do I have to say this ? Both Doug and Carley should survive longer ! It would be unfair for the people who choose Carley if Doug survived longer than Carley. To be honest , I wish Doug/Carley survived with Omid and Christa and then all three of them appear in season 2 .

Ok stop with this Doug vs. Carley stuff, they are both awesome in their way, and it dosen't matter who saves who, that's what the game about.

Telltale admitted themselves that they made the mistake of not developing Doug as much as Carley BEFORE giving you the choice. You get a relationship building point with Carley when she reveals that she knows your secret, you get a humorous scene with the radio, you get to go on a rescue mission together, and with Doug... you have one scene, that's it. So to me it was a no brainer- save the interesting character, but it wasn't that I saw Doug as boring, it's just that he wasn't GIVEN an opportunity to become interesting before the choice.

After that, I'm sure both Doug and Carley have their moments. But to me, Carley's interactions provide more depth to my Lee, so I'll never have a playthrough where I save Doug. The romance subplot, as well as the revealing your secret thing, I see both those as key to Lee's development and I can no longer imagine a playthrough without them. But that's just me.

    Doug was my number 2.

I wasn't even close to crying. I was just:... when Doug went and :( throughout all of ep 5. No other Deaths phased me. sadly. Larry did make me jump though.

    Salt lick out of nowhere.

LETS DERAIL THREADS LIKE BUBBA AND BIOSHOCK!

    Oh, I can help too!

    I hate Lilly.

I never saved Doug Neither, And yeah he never really stood a chance of being picked by much people at least on their First/Canon playthorughs because he got way less screentime then Carley and I think episode 1 Carley saves you twice with a gun plus goes with you and Glenn so she proves herself useful threefold. All doug does is stand at the gate,he didn't stand a snowballs chance in hell I'm afraid. So yeah...

Well Carley is a "Preety girl with a gun"...
but when I played eiposde 1 it seems like Telltale want us to save doug..hell,they even opened facebook page called "save doug"!

These are the reasons I think they wanted us to save doug :
1.Carley is against saving Irene at the motor inn and her bahavior is u chose to give Irene the gun "FINE ! you're all f*cking crazy!

    2. "Lee..if we don't make it you should know that you are a good guy.." doug to lee

    3.Batteries.

Carley had her moments tho,I saved her but just saying WAY less people would have picked her if telltale made her look like brenda from ep 2 /jolene ;) or if doug had a weapon to?

If Doug had saved me twice in episode 1 I would have saved him if for nothing else because I owed him
  • edited August 2013
That was the deciding factor, she saved me, I owe her.
  • edited August 2013
I like all of the morale talks you get if you get Doug in episode three instead of telling your past.

And if Lilly looked like Ursula from the Little Mermaid than many people wouldn't help her with her dad and many would of left her on the road . :p

So here's the trade-off for Doug

    +AWESOME character
    -No telling about your past
    -No Kenny bro speech
    -Little help on the invasion...

But hey, you can still get the Ben bro speech.

    Yeah, he's the wrong choice.
  • edited August 2013
that's what's so bad about this choice.

I like Doug, but he's not much in comparison.

Also. i like the Ben Bro speech.
