Why is it every time something like this happens its always "Video Games, they are the only problem," I remember when New town happened, they said and I quote, Call of Duty did this because that guy played COD or something dumb like it.

    Amen to that.

Because it's easy. They could also blame TV but then most of these reporters are TV so that doesn't work.

Kids can watch R-rated films, kids can play M-rated games, kids can listen to Explicit albums, and they can come out completely sane and normal, not being warped by some magical force that breaks the minds of those under some arbitrary age gate.

I grew up on horror movies and I am no where near normal. Should see me art portfolio from elementary school. I'm sure my mom has it. Something about evidence, character I don't know.

Gone through all the aftermath articles, but the police as well as the press statements are mostly completely wacko. Specifics are given down to the tinyest detail and version number as to what specific game the boy was playing from which developer on what specific platform - but the details the police is usually meant to provide are completely out of the equation. I could not find a single article which would mention what kind of gun was used. An information willfully kept from the public, so the only thing the media could seize on is, of course, the video game.

For an 8 year old, a gun is a toy. Doesn't matter if he played a video game or read the bible before getting his hands on the darn thing. He can't even begin to understand that grown ups would be so reckless and stupid that they would leave a deadly, loaded, safety catch off weapon plainly within his reach.

This is hardly the first time this has happened either. There have been a rash of incidents where toddlers have accidentally killed their parents because a loaded gun was left within their reach.

Is it bad that the first thing I thought when I saw the title of this thread was "How'd he get ahold of a tank?"

Please. Pong is the perfect principle of every shooter. Get hit or dodge out of the way. But it's twisted. You lose points for dodging the deadly bullets.

You're crazy if you think someone can't spin SOMETHING, especially a video game, as evil.

Fuck it. Games are every bit as evil as the media says. Ban the lot of 'em.

I don't know what's more sad, that someone's grandmother got killed by that person himself, or that we're quipping about it all.

    The death part probably.

The situation itself is incredibly tragic, but given that we're all very jaded gamers who are utterly tired of how the media reports this sort of story, us joking around isn't all that surprising.

Hey I remember a broadcast kind of like that. They had a little kid and his Dad on there and they were holding copies of COD and other games. They kept saying how they're going to destroy them and that they were going to try and get others in the area to do it too. It's sad really, I mean, I don't think those kids should have those games in the first place but Newtown and this case just makes games a really easy scapegoat. Thinking games is going to mess up a person is like thinking reading a crime novel is going to mess up a person. It's silliness!

Also WHY NO SAFETY? Why does anyone think it's a good idea to just have a gun lying around.

Because it is. This way you can get shot by your grandchildren even before someone breaks into your home and does even worse things to you. Just think about it for a moment.
    Wait.... No.
  • Still none of the important information available out there. What a fundamental police failure.

One more time, a puzzle with the facts.

    • This kid is 8 year old. He sits in a room with his own TV playing an R rated video game.
    • The woman supposed to watch him sits in the living room in front of yet another TV set.
    • The kid gets up and takes a gun. Was this in the same room he played the game? It certainly wasn't in his grandma's room.
    • He manages to shoot his grandmother in the back of her head. No warning, no safety on, fully loaded, ready to go.

    Poor child. Poor, poor child.

FWIW, I think his guy obviously had other problems, and I don't blame the games...

But this is going to be a national topic of discussion in the coming days. You guys have any thoughts about this?

  • theres a reason we made the game rated for people 17 and older. its idiot parents that don't think or care about raising there kids right that can create things like that. for any parent out there THE GAME WAS MADE FOR PEOPLE 17 AND OVER. IT WAS NOT MADE TO HELP DISTRACT YOUR KID JUST SO YOU DON'T HAVE TO DEAL WITH HIM FOR A FEW HOURS. CAN'T HANDLE KIDS? DON'T HAVE THEM.
    end of rant.

  • Our inalienable Constitutional right to bear arms is not the cause of sick minds. I grew up around guns and was taught to shoot from a very young age by a responsible father. All my uncles and cousins did the same. My older brother had access to his firearms at the age of 14 for home defense when my dad was out. That was a couple of decades ago and with all those guns around no one was ever shot accidently or intentionally. Guns aren't dangerous whatsoever in the hands of a responsible and decent person; which most people are. I don't blame movies or video games either. Things like that don't have the power to change a person like into something evil.

Game is rated M, yet safely in the hands of a child less than half the necessary age. But, what the heck, guns are obviously rated E. Noooo

Well, of course the guns do not cause the sick minds. It's just that the sick minds love the guns so much.

It's always disappointing when people use tragic fatal shootings to advocate an anti-gun agenda.

The Cato study from a few hears ago showed that there were 535 accidental firearms deaths in 2006 within a population of almost 300 million people. Also, an increase in gun control laws has coincided with an increase in violent crime over the last 50 years in this country.

Let's try not to distort statistics.

Remember that in Canada and Britain about half of all burglaries occur when someone is home. In the US only about 13% occur when someone is home. Wonder why that is.

Most self-defense shootings are related to home invasions. There are millions of self-defense gun uses annually and thousands of cases where gun use induced intruders to flee.

Let's promote gun safety and not attack law-abiding citizens who have the right to protect themselves, their family and their property against thieves, rapists and other crazies.

It is not "sick" to want to protect your family.

  • Roughly 5,000 children 14 and under go to the hospital because of accidental drowning-related incidents each year; 15% die and about 20% suffer from permanent neurological disability.

Having a swimming pool is 100 times more likely to lead to an accidental child death than having a gun at home. My apologies for not having a cute little cartoon to post.

Is it time to ban backyard swimming pools?

We need to stop thinking we can take away law-abiding citizens' freedoms just because some misguided people think they know what's best for everyone and because it makes them feel good about themselves.
