Lucasarts was working on Day of the Tentacle HD

edited September 2013 in General Chat

Here's your official "NOOOOOOOOOOOOO" news of the day - it seems that, before the Disney buyout, Lucasarts was working on, and had finished about 80% of, an HD version of Day of the Tentacle. I'm gonna go cry now.

  • If I ever had to explain the meaning of an 'unreliable source', the idea of a kotaku report picked up from IGN would certainly help with forming the image. :(

A lot is possible, but that 80% finished gets a 2% credibility from me, and not more.

  • It wouldn't be the first time they've scrapped something that was almost done.

  • Well if that is true, then that is depressing, but Kotaku news picked up by IGN, the odds are not good.

  • Why cancel 1313? God dammit

Would they have had to redo all the voices? They probably hadn't been recorded at high enough standard (technically speaking) before.

I thought the old voices were PERFECTION.

It depends. Sometimes games back then were recorded in high quality on DAT tapes and then compressed before they were shipped (if I remember correctly, this was the case with Beneath a Steel Sky).

I'd imagine that a company like LucasArts (that's a division of a multi-million dollar company) would be one of the companies that would have spent the money to do this (especially since it was released during a time when their charter was still to make innovative and technologically advanced video games).

  • True. But would it be the first time they've scrapped something that was almost done without ever advertising it?

Certainly not. First Assault will attest to that.

In fact, the credibility of the Day of the Tentacle remake goes up a bit when you look at the fact Lucasfilm renewed the Maniac Mansion trademarks last year (First Assault was first discovered through Lucasfilm domain registrations, so it's not too much of a leap).

  • Anyone know if there were any screen shots released of this? Any leaks?

I think this is one of the greatest games of all time (and I'm a Sierra partisan... hehe) and the animation and art style is perfect. I would have been concerned about it losing some of its charm in the upgrade, but if it could have been done well then that would have been amazing.

  • Hopefully they still hold on to it.

LucasArts usually had such amazing voice work in their adventures, even at a time when competitors still had some lousy acting even in big budget titles.
