-I didn´t finish the game, I got bored of Guybrush crashing into walls and having to use the keyboard to solve a puzzle I had to go check in the internet because it was imposible....
That was annoying... you'd run towards something and he'd just hit the wall, turn around and run onto another screen.
I have played all Monkey Island games in order, so I guess I qualify to answer this question.
I would say EMI was a good game actually. Not quite as funny as some of the other ones but worth playing. Mostly those that say it was an abomination do so out of nostalgia and such...and that Ron Gilbert wasn't really involved...but as I understand he wasn't extremely involved in CMI either.
Nostalgia clouds this question for a lot of us, but I'd say EMI is worth playing. I do remember it crashing a lot though. Or that mighta been my crappy PC...
I thought the game was fine, but like many I feel the Monkey Kombat was overly complicated. I had to write down everything to beat the PC game. And even then I found out quickly what beats what changes if you reset the game. ARGHH!
The PS2 version has a tool that keeps tracks of the moves you learned which made this frustrating part much easier.
Other then that it has its moments and is a worthy edition to the series IMO.
I am an old school MI fan, however I recently replayed all of the monkey island games in order, first of all because i wanted to go in ToMI fresh and remembering everything clearly. Also because after playing Secret of Monkey Island SE it just got me into the mood to replay the rest of the series as well. In all honestly, EMI isn't THAT bad. Yeah it isn't quite as good as the other games, but it is decent. The 3d graphics arent terrible, but I do agree CMI's art style would of been better. Monkey Kombat was awful, and the ending was so cheesy it annoyed me now that I'm older playing it. However I did have fun playing through it again and it does indeed have its moments. So I believe it is definitely worth playing if you're a fan of the series. Ofcourse though, you should play through the games in order, so play through LeChucks Revenge and CMI before you do go through EMI. Also, playing with a controller is easier in EMI.
It's definitely worth playing as are all Monkey Island games, but it's probably the weakest of the four.
Here's my list from favorite to least favorite:
1. The Curse of Monkey Island (Monkey Island 3)
2. Monkey Island 2: Lechuck's Revenge
3. The Secret of Monkey Island (Monkey Island 1)
4. Escape From Monkey Island (Monkey Island 4)
I didn't put Tales of Monkey Island (Monkey Island 5) on the list since all of the episodes aren't out yet but so far it's better than secret, but not quite as good as as lechuck's revenge. They're all great games though.
(MI3) Curse of Monkey Island
(MI5?) Tales of Monkey Island
(MI2) LeChuck's Revenge
(MI4) Escape from Monkey Island
(MI1) The Secret of Monkey Island ...insert fan-games...
Jack Keane (Not Monkey Island, but the closest anyone else has gotten to it and I could well believe that it takes place in the same 'universe', so to speak) ...insert rip-offs...
(MI1:SE) The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition
...MI:SE is so far down due to its atrocious control scheme on the PC. That's just me though. I would agree that all the games are good, but they do have their own individual little flaws.
Comments
it was OK... but yeah, not VERY exciting
I'm not sure that's accurate. It wasn't as funny as previous games but there was definitely some humour
Is that a criticism? I can't tell.
Fairly true, but some things were funny (sadly I can't recall any of them)
?
It was quite bad... better with a joypad

Monkey Kombat was horrible, though. You have to have real endurance to make it all the way through that.
