how does one become a mod?

I've often wondered how mods became mods, and if it's simply saying hey! I'd like to be a mod! I know that puzzle has privilege because of her being telltale staff, so I was wondering how the rest of you (blind, vain, darth, Jennifer,) actually became mods. there are several people on this forum who I think would make excellent moderators, but I'm not sure if that's possible.

You must become one with the walkers, then, and only then, can you become a true moderator.

  • hmmmm. not sure that's it. but thanks for the tip! I'll try that. egheuauhuehuehauheuheuuehauheuhu RHUAHUHFDUHUHRUEHAUDHUAH am I a mod yet?

  • No, you are lacking a stache, sorry bro.

I know that puzzle has privilege because of her being telltale staff, so I was wondering how the rest of you (blind, vain, darth, Jennifer,) actually became mods. there are several people on this forum who I think would make excellent moderators, but I'm not sure if that's possible.

That question has many answers, and the answer has many parts.

At the time, there are six active moderators - Blind Sniper, Darth Marsden, Jennifer, DjNDB and Macfly77. Oh, and myself, hello.

You might not be aware of all those mods, as they all choose for themselves where they can help most. DjNDB, for example, is usually found in support, where he relentlessly helps members with their games, unpaid. DjNDB is our senior now. He's been around for time memorial. He was around already when I came on this forum in 2009.

Here's the kicker: I actually DID say "hello, I'd like to be a mod" after being on the forum for two years, probably, err, behaving somewhat during that time. Things have changed since then, we have set up an awesome mod squad, and thankfully the Telltale PR people have always let the mod squad suggest and approve new moderators since then.

That's how all the other presently active mods came to be mods - including, actually, puzzlebox, who became a lowly moderator after being a community member for quite some year. One day she was looking for an actual job, properly applied for a PR position at Telltale and... the rest is history. She freaked us the hell out when she suddenly became staff, I can tell you that. ;)

  • I'm actually quite boring irl; all my jokes and smartassery comes from using gifs and memes (mostly). I'm just the ADHD guy sitting his ass in front of a Surface Pro, piled on with Asperger's syndrome and lots of other shit.

I'm not a Mod, unfortunately. I would be an efficient one, though. I'm on the forums pretty much every day.

  • You definitely have the correct attitude to be a mod. You always argue that people should follow the forum guidelines, regardless of how difficult it may be in the situation. I have seen you try to diffuse several arguments by citing the guidelines. People are always baited by trolls, but don't seem to realize that they are breaking more guidelines in their response than the troll itself.

I became a mod through (what I presume was) making a handful of helpful and insightful posts explaining the nature of Telltale to newer fans who had joined around the time Telltale went mainstream with Walking Dead/Wolf Among Us from the perspective of an older Telltale fan. One post in particular had me summarizing a bunch of complicated past events of Telltale to explain why older Telltale fans were sometimes abrasive towards newer fans of Telltale from Walking Dead, and how Telltale was actually doing much more to appeal to the newer Walking Dead fan base than what fans had expected during the Season 1 - Season 2 news drought.

Additionally, I would also find various previews/interviews for upcoming Telltale series from various websites, and make a write up where I would summarize what the previews/interviews had said about the upcoming game. For instance, you might recall I made that huge thread for the Season Premiere of Wolf Among Us where I kept updating the original post whenever there was an update on the game, or a new interview/preview was released.

Here are the threads I mentioned above which I think helped me become noticed:

Of course, however, it helps to do stuff like this just because you are a fan, and not because you want to look good and become a mod. I just made posts like these because I was/am a huge fan of Telltale, and becoming a mod was something that did not even cross my mind.

  • OK. First of all, you don't become a mod just by asking. The fact that Vainamoinen did was an exception, and one that is NOT going to be repeated, especially give how some people have been asking. Cute cat pictures do not sway anyone, I'm afraid :)

Secondly, if we (or rather, if Telltale) decide that we could do with another mod or two, then they'll take a look at existing members of the site who have been helpful and respectful... and, ideally, who know how to use proper punctuation and grammar, like wot I does. They'll then get in touch with those people and discuss the possibility of making them a mod with them.

This was, I believe, the case with me and Jennifer - we were both liked and respected members of the old forum who behaved well and kept things interesting... as well as flagging spambots. We got quite a few of those back in the day. Like, seriously.

And then one day I got an e-mail asking if I wanted to be a mod... and I said "thanks, but no thanks", since I didn't feel qualified. But then they asked again a couple months later and I said "sure, why not", and puzzlebox has been regretting it ever since, mwa ha ha.

So if you WANT to be a mod... than yeah, chances are you're not going to be one. Not here, anyway.
