The citizens of the island were actually from a far more technologically advanced culture, but after the world was mostly destroyed, they voluntarily had their minds erased and started a new life on the island.

It's worth a lot of money!

It should also be moved to the game forum.

    It doesn't exist.

    1. Guybrush has been in a coma all along. LeChuck really is his brother, and Elaine is a nurse at the hospital. The Voodoo Lady is the female surgeon. Monkey Island™ holds the key to Guybrush recovering from his coma. It's hidden beneath the island through the giant monkey head, and he just hasn't found it yet.

    2. Guybrush is really a sixth-former (or American equivalent, i.e. near the end of high-school) who is dreaming all this up during a particularly boring class. Monkey Island™ is simply a metaphor in his subconscious for his feeling of isolation and lost...ness in the world and the nonsensical scripts with crappy continuity signify the mess he's let his life get into.

    3. Guybrush had his memory erased after he was frozen in ice for millennia. Friendly aliens realised it would be unethical to keep him in a world where he has nobody of his own kind. They deciphered his language and made him live in a makebelieve world: Monkey Island. The secret is that Monkey Island™ is the one place where he can communicate with his conscious self and see his real surroundings, if he tries hard enough.
Yes... okay... half of that's from a movie I saw years ago. I can't remember the name of it actually, anyone know?

    4. The Monkey Island universe is a world of torment, with Monkey Island™ providing the only way to get to heaven. LeChuck is Satan, and Timmy the Monkey one of those winged monkeys of Wizard of Oz, come to drag him to the pits of hell.

    5. The whole universe has been created by Guybrush (real name Gerry) to escape his horrible life. He's a petty criminal with no home and a bad coke habit. Elaine is his mother who died when he was three and through her he sees the golden years that seem so far in the past. LeChuck is his father who beat her, and finally killed her by accident one day. Monkey Island™ is Guybrush's mind. A secluded spot where he can get away from the world, but with constant threats coming from the outside world.
... and Guybrush, in this version, has a lot of baggage :P

Maybe the core characters in MI were Guybrush's family

I mean, Elaine is probably Guybrush's sister esp how there is an article where Ron Gilbert didn't like Elaine being Guybrush's wife since he said that she sees him as a brother

I think that the original secret was that Guybrush is in a virtual world where Elaine is his sister and Lachuck is his jerk of a brotha.

Stan could be the guy is probably the ticket sellsmen for access to the virtual world of somethin

I think the true Secret is something along the lines of the T-shirt on Melee Island. Built up to be something great, but so small it'll even disappoint Guybrush when he finds it.

    I discovered something horrible:
    in Monkey Island ignore the m, n, k, y, i, l, a and d and add w, r, g's, e, s, u and b
Look at what it spells: George.W Bush.
    I'll continue my investigations!

It should never be revealed. It would just be a dissapointment and lose all its awe - a secret is a secret for a reason.

The real secret is that there's no secret at all. It was just a feint by lucas arts to make people snoopy, so they'll sell more copies.

They already wanted to do this with "the secret of maniac mansion", but they thougt "You can't hide a real big secret in a lousy house full of weird people", so they skipped this idea and used it in another game, where they got a HOLE ISLAND to hide the secret.... which isn't actually a secret, cause it's only marketing strategy....

alright, the first part could possibly be true, the second is just weird stuff coming out of my mind.... :D

By LucasArts you mean Ron Gilbert.

...if you believe there isn't a secret. I'm of the opinion the "secret" is Guybrush is a little kid like MI2 suggests.
