Do you think a zombie apocalypse would realistically ever happen?

Aside from cannibals, would an actual apocalypse happen if a virus or some disease was released to wake the dead? I'm not saying that it will happen or I want it to happen, but would it be possible in reality? I say that it'll never happen, but with technology these days, anything is possible.

  • I have read a few articles that say it's possible... But I think it's all BS. Just talk.

    No.

A disease might fuck up civilization eventually, but the chances of it being 'zombies' are pretty much nill.

  • Everything is possible

  • Let's just pretend it happens ... Well with our society and with what we've seen the outbreak would be ended really soon.

  • Probably will happen.. But Because Zombies are super slow it will end quickly.

Probably wont happen in our lifetime though

  • It could happen.

    Aliens you see.

If one was going to happen, it would be a genetically modified/mutated form of rabies or a new man made disease, and it would most likely be put down pretty fast. And the zombies would most likely not be TWD zombies, they would be more like the zombies from 28 Days later, or the
common infected of Left 4 dead.

  • No, but it's really fun to plan for one.

  • ALIIEENS

It could happen. Aliens you see.

  • It'll happen, "Soon."

  • Not necessarily zombies, maybe like in TLOU just infected

"Aside from cannibals"? Do you think a cannibal apocalypse will happen sometime?

By definition zombies can't exist in reality, but if there were things like zombies then we'd probably come up with a different name for them while thinking about them in similar ways (i.e. philosophical zombies). As for technology, I think there are some pretty nasty diseases out there but fortunately it wouldn't be worth the time and money to specifically create something like a T-virus for a variety of reasons, and we're more likely to be hit by an asteroid or have temporary outbreaks of real viruses than a truly mass extinction.

Either way, civilization would overcome incredible odds and survive somehow. And even if anything's possible, that doesn't mean anything you can think of is equally likely as anything else, or likely at all.

Never know lol if virus evolves to good enough state

  • It could happen.

    it won't happen

  • I think it'll happen, in fact it better happen. I don't care if I'm one of the first to die, I just want it to happen. I won't give a reason, I'm kinda hesitant to even give a reason in case I get hate.

  • It actually could happen, new diseases are started every day, normally though they are in animals. If some form of rabies could evolve to a point of being able to speed the infection process up to around, I don't know, six hours, the world could have a big problem on it's hands. But, it's also highly unlikely that it will happen, but still (picks up crowbar) it's still good to be prepared.

  • Thank you.

I think its a possibility, if diseases like Cordyceps or mad cow disease skipped from animals to humans.

  • Yeah, and there's a crazy-ass fungus in the Pacific Islands that can infect and take over ants, using them to increase the fungus population.

  • Nope, reanimating dead flesh is impossible, now if your talking about a disease that changes the way the human mind functions that is a little different. A rabies like virus that spreads on a large scale that causes the host to become murderously violent is a little more feasible, imo.

  • It could.

  • I'm not entirely sure why you're apologising but its ok :)

I like the 38 days/38 weeks later spin on zombies because they weren't actually dead they were just really really angry.

  • I think something similar could and will probably happen you know like disaster or something .

I wouldn't recommend this site for any sort of research, but I read just to see both points of the argument. This is only talking about the classic zombies, what about infected? Or in this case, TWD infection that has the possibility of being an airborne sickness that infects the body after the person has been killed. I'd recommend this site, to prove that if an evolved version of this fungus could pose a threat to humanity. http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2012/05/120504-zombie-ant-fungus-science-environment-rainforest/

And then, there's always an evolved form of rabies. http://www.who.int/rabies/en/

  • No, but I read about a lot of diseases, and I think that even though there won't be actual zombies, there could be something close if you combine all the diseases here: http://io9.com/5547673/5-real-diseases-that-could-make-you-act-just-like-a-zombie

  • All the points raised in the Cracked article (and yes, I am fully aware that Cracked isn't exactly an authority on health risks) still apply for TWD's infection, except for the whole "biting is the only means of infection" thing. If we're talking more The Last of Us-type zombies, those are more problematic but still fairy manageable given the current infrastructure that we have. Zombie fiction tends to grossly underestimate humanity's ability to deal with threats to our survival, especially one that can't think or adapt.

  • No offence intended but that is a little naive, there are thousands of species of animal out there, why would a disease/fungus/virus/bacteria evolve in such a way to turn strictly humans into mindless killing machines. Like I said no offence intended but the chance of anything like this actually happening is one in a billion.

  • I doubt it but I think it could happen just not with the typical zombie. I mean it could happen but probably would be a virus or condition that's more like rabies than the zombie infection.

  • What the hell is wrong with you?! Your parents, your friends... you're saying you're ready to lose them if that happens huh? Yeah, you're.... not okay my friend.

  • Fun fact: There's actually a desease called Walking Corple Delusion tha is a rare mental disorder in which people hold a delusional belief that they are dead (either figuratively or literally), do not exist, are putrefying, or have lost their blood or internal organs. In rare instances, it can include delusions of immortality.

  • But, TWD's infection, whenever someone dies, they turn. Humanity could never be safe from that sort of virus, and would eventually fall to it. There is no beating the TWD infection because no matter what, whenever someone dies it adds on to the zombie population. So, no matter how much we adapt or survive, if we don't find some sort of cure, we would fall to it.

  • I dunno if it would be that much of a problem, it's just like it is now if someone dies you shoot em in the head. Also you would make it so people sleep alone in a locked room so if they die in their sleep they won't go and rip other peoples throats out.

  • Human life would certainly not be the same, but I still don't think it would get to the point where we'd risk extinction. Martial law would have to be implemented and a lot of infrastructure would collapse but we'd be able to adapt to survive.
